Program Description

  • The University of Alberta offers a Doctor of Dental Surgery for a duration of 4 years or 5 terms program.
  • It is an on-campus program offered on a full-time basis only.
  • A Doctor of Dental Surgery degree will give students the education and expertise required to practice dentistry.

  • The 1st and 2nd years of the program are comprised of an integrated curriculum, studying anatomical, physiologic, and health systems, including:

    • Musculoskeletal System
    • Neurosciences and Oncology
  • The first two years of the program also includes the study of Oral Biology, Dental Anatomy, Oral Pathology, and an introduction to the pre-clinical practice of dentistry.
  • The 3rd and 4th years of the program are comprised of lectures, laboratories, seminars, and clinical practice.
  • Students can apply for various types of scholarships like Alberta Blue Cross Scholarship in Dentistry, Alberta Dental Association and College Awards, Albert Bodnarchuk Award in Dentistry, etc.
  • The Doctor of Dental Surgery program is accredited through the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

  • Students should complete a year of university study and complete courses in English, introductory chemistry, organic chemistry, sociology, psychology, statistics, and biology.
  • Students required to complete at least two years of university study prior to entering the Dentistry program.
  • The prerequisite courses to be included in the 2 years at university are full-year equivalents in biology, English, general or inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, and half year equivalents in statistics and biochemistry.
  • Students must also write the Dental Aptitude Test (DAT) to be considered for admission.
    • A GPA of 3.0/4.0 is required to get admission in this program.

    Work Experience:

    Students must have at least two pre-professional years of university education.

    Indian Student Eligibility:

    Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

    • Complete International Baccalaureate (IB) or Advanced Placement (AP) courses.
    • Secured a minimum of 70% marks in one of these certificates: All India Senior School Certificate, Higher Secondary School Certificate, Intermediate Certificate, Indian School Certificate.
    • Completed grade 11 and grade 12 with 75% marks.

    Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.

    Following are the required documents:

    • CV/Resume: Outline of academic achievements and/or awards, publications, relevant work, and/or volunteer experience.
    • Transcripts: Submit copies of official transcripts from post-secondary institutions attended in PDF format.
    • Degree Certificate: It provides proof of degree completion and must be an original copy issued by the institution with an official stamp or seal.
    • Medical Testing and Immunization Requirements: Students must have immunization records that are due at the time when admission is confirmed. 
    • Proof of Residency Status: Because residency status determines the competitive pool in which students are ranked, students may be required to present proof of residency status.
    • Police Information Checks: Students should be aware that a clear Police Information Check (PIC) is required as a condition of admission and that any criminal charges pending must be declared.
    • Personal Interview: Students have to give an interview to get admission in this program.
    • Students have to submit the results from the Canadian Dental Aptitude Test.
    • ELP Scores: Students have to submit their English language proficiency scores like IELTS, TOEFL or other test scores.
