Program Description

  • Graduate Certificate in Indigenous Sport and Recreation at the University of Alberta is offered as a 9 months program.
  • It is an on-campus program offered on a full-time basis.
  • The Indigenous Sport and Recreation Graduate Certificate program is designed to help working professionals to gain a deeper understanding of the cultural context of Indigenous communities through sport and recreation.
  • This program is offered in partnership between the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation and the Faculty of Native Studies.
  • This certificate is delivered in a blended format with:
    • online course instruction
    • attendance at a one week, face-to-face learning experience
  • The one week face-to-face learning experience will provide an opportunity for students to meet, connect, and learn with others in the cohort and share experiences and knowledge. 
  • The program delivery mode is 90% online and 10% in-person.
  • It is a cohort model program and the class size is consist of 25 students.
  • The focuses of this certificate is to provide professionals with the skills and knowledge to better understand and help build healthy Indigenous communities through sport and recreation.
  • Students are required to complete three courses in a prescribed order plus attendance at the mandatory, in-class component. The courses will be taken consecutively:
    • Indigeneity and Settler Colonialism
    • Managing Recreation, Sport, and Physical Activity Programs in Indigenous Communities
    • Indigenous People’s Physical Activity
  • After completing this Graduate Certificate program students get an average salary of 30,011 USD.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

  • Graduation from a post-secondary or high school program is mandatory for admission to the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation.
  • students must have an English Proficiency test score.

Indian Student Eligibility:

Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Secured a minimum of 70% marks in one of these certificates: All India Senior School Certificate, Higher Secondary School Certificate, Intermediate Certificate, Indian School Certificate.
  • Completed grade 11 and grade 12 with 70% marks.

Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.

  • CV/Resume: Outline of academic achievements and/or awards, publications, relevant work, and/or volunteer experience.
  • Transcripts: Submit a school transcript that shows all of the high school courses students have already taken and grades they have already received, as well as courses still in progress. 
  • Reference Form/Letter: Three reference forms and letters of recommendation completed and uploaded by referees (Teachers, guidance counselors, or Professors) directly to the online portal.
  • Statement of Intent: Reasons or intentions for pursuing studies in this program, including a description of prior experience.
  • ELP Scores: Students have to submit their English language proficiency scores like IELTS, TOEFL, or other test scores.
