Hindustan Institute of Maritime Training (HIMT) is India’s largest maritime institute located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. HIMT Chennai is affiliated to Indian Maritime University and has been approved by Directorate General of Shipping. It has been rated outstanding (Grade 1) for all its courses. The institute offers wide range courses in the field of nautical science and marine engineering at undergraduate and postgraduate level. HIMT Chennai admissions are done on the basis of IMU-CET conducted by the Indian Maritime University.

B.Tech (Marine Engineering)

Intermediate graduate with a minimum of 60% in PCM and at least 50% in English

17 to 25 years as on 31st July

B.Sc (Nautical Science)

Pass in 10+2 or equivalent with a PCM aggregate of not less than 55% OR Physics as individual subject in one of the year (OR) B.Sc in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry or Electronics with an average of not less than 55% of marks in the final year. (OR) BE/ B.Tech degree from IIT or from a college recognized by AICTE approved with not less than 50% marks.

Diploma in Nautical Science

Not more than 25 years as on 1st January or 1st August

Pre-sea Training for Mechanical Engineers

B.E. Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture with minimum of 50%

Maximum 28 years as on 1st March or 1st September.

Pre-sea Training for Diploma Holders

Diploma in Mechanical/Marine/Naval Architecture/Electrical/Electrical and Electronics Engineering with 50% in English at 10th or 12th level.

General Purpose - Deck/Engine Rating

10th pass with 40% aggregate and 40% marks in English

Minimum 17½ and not exceeding 25 years

NOTE: For admissions in B.Sc and DNS a candidate should be physically fit for sea service under standard norms, with minimum unaided vision in each eye to be 6/6, and with no color blindness.

HIMT Chennai Admission

Applicants seeking admission in the Maritime Institute are required to fill an online application form. They will also have to appear for IMU-CET conducted at the university level. Apart from this, they will also need to pay an application fee of INR 1,000 either through Netbanking or Demand Draft in favor of “HIMT COLLEGE” payable at Chennai. The candidates who will clear the entrance exam are called for Psychometric Test, Medical Examination followed by Panel Interview and Pre-Sea Training.

HIMT Chennai Scholarships

HIMT College offers a number of attractive scholarships to reward deserving students and make education accessible to all. Listed below is a brief about the same:

  1. Merit-cum-Means Scholarships: This is awarded to students belonging from a low-income group with a continuous meritorious academic background. Each student undergoing 6 months GP rating course is given a scholarship amount of INR 25,000.

  1. Walk-in-Walk-out Scholarships: Top ten rank holders of any state or central board examination at the plus two or equivalent level are awarded a 50% off in the tuition fees. If they continue to secure the highest marks in each semester then the remaining 50% fees will be waived. 
  2. Sports Scholarships: It is awarded to those students with an outstanding record in sports. Students who have won National level prize would be offered a one-time scholarship of INR 20,000 in the course fees. Similarly, if any student has won a State level prize would be offered a one-time scholarship of INR 10,000 in the course fees.
  3. Scholarship for Special Merit: An award of INR 5,000 is provided to students who show improvement in every semester. It is given annually to each Nautical and Engineering stream. 
  4. Scholarship for Indian Armed Forces: HIMT College provides 50% off for the students whose parent has been martyred while in the service of Indian Armed Forces (Army, Navy or Airforce.) The applicants will be required to produce a confirmatory certificate from the Government of India. 
  5. Miscellaneous Scholarships: The Institute provides a scholarship upto 20% of the course fee for various modular courses to cadets who are undergoing the pre-sea training. 
  6. Female Candidate Scholarship: To fulfill the academic needs of female candidates, the Institute provides them a fee waiver of INR 25,000.
