Ans. B.Tech in CUSAT is the best bet after the IITs, NITs, IITs. School of Engineering (SoE) at Kochi and Cochin University College of Engineering Kuttanad (CUCEK) at Alappuzha are one of the few govt. colleges in Kerala which are considered to be the good ones. Being admitted in a Govt. college has certain perks. You get to be molded as a quality engineer as there is no spoon-feeding and you have to grasp everything you need by yourself. If you get into SoE you get the privileges of studying in a University environment. Because, experience strikes firsthand, get involved in activities in your campus. There is at least one event or workshop conducted on the campus every month. There are intra and inter-university cultural fests and Technical fests, sports meets. Ans. If you are looking forward to a chilled out career with a handsome salary in the range of INR 8-10 lakhs initially from an Oil PSU, then BTech in Fire and Safety at SOE CUSAT is a good option. One of my friends did his Mechanical Engineering from CUSAT, he had the option to opt for Fire and Safety but felt it was not rigorous enough. According to his experience, CUSAT offers decent placement opportunities to BTech Fire and Safety students. The placement rate for BTech Fire & Safety is around 100% and mostly PSU hires students from this branch. The table below gives a brief insight into the placement statistics of CUSAT. Although you may get admission through the NRI Spot round. The required cutoff for 2021 for the different branches including IT is given below. Ques. How bad is the ragging at SOE CUSAT?

Ans. If you want to take admission in SOE, then this answer may be helpful. Ragging in this institute is only confined to making you write seniors' assignments or doing some funny things. One of my friends has studied in this institute, and this thing has happened to him once. He told me that after completing the assignment, his seniors gave him biryani treats. He also told me that the seniors sometimes forced him to write their assignments. And afterward, he was rewarded with Cadbury dairy milk. This is usually how these incidents end. After a certain period of time, around two months, these seniors become the best seniors. Especially the ones who ragged you the most. To conclude, you won’t experience ragging in the true sense of the word, at the institute. The seniors are also quite helpful and you can reach out to them for any problem. Ans. Placements in CUSAT for Computer Science department is good and many students. The institute is providing nearly 100 % placements for all students and is constantly improving. This is evident by the increase in the cut-off scores for the program in recent years. Placement Statistics: According to the placement highlights of recent years, the average package hovers around 5 LPA. Some of the companies that visit the campus include L&T, IBM, Musigma, Cisco Infosys, TCS, Oracle, etc. Some of the students use these opportunities to bag very good package in reputed organizations. CGPA Rule: Many reputed MNCs visit the campus placement of CUSAT, such as Oracle, Google, and E-Commerce Giants like Amazon, Flipkart, Snapdeal. But very few students qualify for the interview and secures recruitment. The main reason for this is that most good programmers do not qualify for the 8.5 CGPA criteria. And students who qualify the CGPA criteria lack the coding skill. Although there are exceptions and many students get good placement offers from on-campus as well as off-campus placements. Ques. Which is the better branch in SOE, CUSAT: CS or IT?

Ans. One of my friends shared his experience of being a student of IT in SOE. His first choice was CS during registration but he was given IT due to his rank. Initially, he missed CS and remained worried about being in a different branch. But he finally understood that IT was better than CS. The following points are based on his experience at the campus: The faculty members at CS are very strict when compared to IT. The administration level is also managed at IT. You will experience a lot of hassle in CS even if you want a sign on any application. The syllabus of IT is comparatively better than CS. Speaking of IT & CS in SOE, there is also a difference in the way both these courses are managed by the faculties. Both have amazing and experienced faculties taking care of the subjects and therefore it will not be fair to prefer one over another. This is naturally because of the difference in subjects both the branches have and a different approach is needed for the faculties to explain them to the students. It is also suggested by many seniors and experienced friends that you take a closer and detailed look at the placements of every year for both these branches at CUSAT before taking the call. There is always a slight difference in the placement every year depending on the industrial, market requirements, and interests of the students. Ques. Can I get IT in CUSAT at 2000 rank in SOE?

Ans. If you are originally from Kerala, then you will certainly be going to get admission to IT at CUSAT in SOE. If you are not from Kerala, then also you can get admission at the mentioned rank as per the admission records and data of last year. A friend of mine who scored 2091 was able to secure a seat in IT at CUSAT and he was the rank closer for that branch. Admission through NRI Quota Supposing you do not get into SOE for IT based on your rank, there is actually another way to secure your admission. You must have heard of the NRI quota admissions at various universities. You shall be eligible to apply through it. The tuition fees every semester of students coming through the NRI quota is slighter higher as compared to the rest of the students. The pre-requisite here is obviously an NRI seat is vacant when you apply. As far as I am aware, all the 9 NRI seats were occupied in NRI general counseling. Once the general spot counseling is finished, the NRI quota counseling starts and if there’s a seat vacant, there are high chances of you securing that admission. I also know of some candidates who tried their luck at the spot rounds. Since it is a government funded institution, Campus provides students great freedom and almost all faculties are highly qualified.The extra curricular student activities in the campus increases student's management skills and help them gain confidence by being part of everything themselves. Great atmosphere and infrastructure and facilities.All student amenities are provided in the campus at reasonable cost. Remarks

Negative remarks: Alumni relations is very weak and any effort put forward by the students to grow it is stopped by the college. Placement activities still require support as majority of the companies are IT firms. The campus is slowly loosing its green look as trees are cut every now and then to make more buildings. Positive remarks: The college provides a start up incubation centre, CITTIC for aspiring entrepreneurs. The degree from this college is of high value The college is NBA accredited with TEQIP-3. The faculty is highly experienced and trained. The campus provides a lot of opportunities.
