Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports in Patiala is one of the Asia’s largest Sports Institute.This Institute is popularly known as the “Mecca” of Indian Sports and has produced Coaches of high caliber who contribute in rendering their expertise and assistance in the preparation of the national teams for various International competitions. Housed in the erstwhile Palace of Maharaja of Patiala (Punjab), National Institute of Sports,is now the Academic Wing of the Sports Authority of India that was established by the Government of India on 7th May, 1961 with the objective of developing sports in the country on Scientific lines and to train the Coaches in different sports disciplines.

Following is the eligibility criteria to take admission in the course
(I) Graduate in any subject from any Indian/Foreign recognized university.
(ii) Diploma course in Sports Coaching from S.A.I., N.S.N.I.S., Patiala or its other academic centres with minimum 60% marks.
(iii) Aptitude for Research Work.
(iv) Sports Proficiency.

The selection of the candidates for admission to Master of Sports Coaching will be conducted at Patiala. The candidate has to qualify a written test and an interview. The selection will also be based on the academic qualifications, achievements in the concerned field of sports, experience, achievements in the field of coaching and marks obtained in Diploma Course in Sports Coaching.
The Institute also holds the responsibility of National Coaching Camps, for the participation in the International competitions in various sports like Athletics, Boxing, Hockey etc. The sports persons attending NIS Patiala and High Altitude Training Center are provided with comfortable stay in hostels with nutritious food and training facilities.

The main objective of this scheme is to nurture sportspersons who had attained excellence in their particular sports. SCT, COE and Pay and Play are the schemes. The Institute is also running Hostel and Day Boarding Schemes for some of the selected players.
