Guwahati Medical College and Hospital was established in 1960 along with Silchar Medical College as a twin college. The college was initially started in an empty Ayurvedic College with 60 students. The official building of Guwahati Medical College was built in 1962. These colleges were the second medical colleges to be opened in Assam.

The college offers 6 degrees and 2 diploma courses, which includes a one-year internship. At the postgraduate level, it offers degrees with a 3-year duration in 33 departments and also a 2-year diploma course. 

It also has an institute of Pharmacy that offers Diploma in Pharmacy (2- years). Popular courses often taken by students include D Pharm, MD Dermatology, MS Gynecology, MCh Urology and MS General Surgency. The college is affiliated to Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences.

Admission for all undergraduate and postgraduate programs are strictly done based on the Entrance Test conducted by All India Selection bodies (NEET).

All admissions are done based on the National Entrance Eligibility Test (NEET). All applying candidates are required to score above the required cut-off and come from a science background to be eligible to apply. 

How to Apply?

  • All candidates are required to appear for the National Entrance Eligibility Test (NEET) and apply for counselling.
  • To apply, students have to download the application for NEET UG from the official website and fill in their personal details and upload their 10th and 12th / equivalent (if available) mark sheets in the portal.
  • After the NEET results are announced, counselling will take place according to the preference of the candidate on a fixed informed date. 
  • Students can apply for counselling from the official website of the Directorate of Medical Education Assam.  
  • Admissions will take place per the NEET scores with preference given to the highest scoring candidate.

Counselling Procedure

  • Candidates are required to register online for counselling on the official website after NEET results are out. Students will have to choose their top priority college and courses and lock them in the portal
  • During the 1st stage of counselling, students with higher scores are given preference and allotment is done accordingly, after which they can either reject the allotted college or complete the admission process.
  • Stage 2 of counselling takes place similar to stage 1, where the remaining students get allotted to colleges based on their marks and availability of colleges and courses.
