IISER Kolkata Admission Process
BS-MS Admission
All IISER BS-MS seats fill through a single common counselling process managed by the IISER Joint Admission Committee, using the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT) as the primary selection instrument.
- IAT route: Candidates write the IISER Aptitude Test, which tests Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics at Class 12 level. Eligibility: 10+2 pass with at least 60% marks (General/OBC) or 55% (SC/ST/PwD) in PCB or PCM. Minimum age 17 years as of October 1 of the admission year.
- JEE Advanced route: Candidates with a valid JEE Advanced rank are directly eligible to appear for counselling without taking IAT. This is the alternative route used primarily by engineering-aspirant profiles who later opt for science research.
- Counselling: A single centralised portal ranks all qualified candidates across IAT, JEE Advanced, and (historically) KVPY streams. Candidates choose from all seven IISERs and the seat allocation proceeds over up to nine rounds from July to September.
IISER Kolkata has approximately 310 BS-MS seats across all disciplines. The Computational and Data Sciences stream has the newest and smallest intake at approximately 30 seats per year. Competition for the Physical and Chemical Sciences streams is high, with IAT ranks in the top 500 typically needed for a seat at IISER Kolkata.
M.Sc Admission
M.Sc admissions are through JAM (Joint Admission Test for Masters) for Mathematics, and through a separate institute-level test or JAM for the Astronomy and Space Physics and Chemical Biology programmes. Eligibility is a three-year BSc in the relevant discipline from a recognised university.
PhD and Integrated MS-PhD Admission
PhD admissions are twice a year (January and July cycles). Candidates need a postgraduate degree in the relevant discipline plus a valid CSIR-UGC NET, GATE, JEST, INSPIRE PhD fellowship, or a written test and interview conducted by IISER Kolkata. Research fellows receive DST-SERB or similar fellowship during the programme.
IISER Kolkata Career Outcomes
IISER Kolkata does not conduct campus placement drives in the conventional engineering-institute sense. The institute is a research-oriented institution and its graduates primarily pursue doctoral studies and research careers globally. A growing number of BS-MS graduates in recent batches have also moved into private-sector roles in data science, pharma, biotech, and quantitative finance.
The majority of BS-MS graduates from IISER Kolkata proceed to PhD programmes at IITs, IISc, TIFR, NCBS, and top global universities in the USA, Europe, and Australia. The institute has a strong record of graduate placements in competitive international PhD programmes.
| Career Pathway | Typical Next Step |
|---|---|
| Research (Academic) | PhD at IITs, IISc, TIFR, or foreign universities; Post-doc; Faculty positions |
| Government Research | ISRO, DAE labs, CSIR labs, DBT institutes, DRDO |
| Pharma and Biotech | Research associate, formulation scientist, clinical research roles |
| Data Science and Finance | Quantitative analyst, data scientist, ML engineer in private firms |
| Civil Services (UPSC) | IAS, IPS, IFS through UPSC Civil Services Examination |
Graduates from the Computational Data Sciences stream have a higher rate of direct industry placement in data science and analytics roles compared to the traditional science streams. The Mathematics and Physics streams have the strongest representation in global PhD programmes.
