Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Sociology is an undergraduate program which deals with various aspects of social behavior and its consequence on modern society. Students who have successfully qualified the 10+2 examination are eligible for admission to this program.

It is a 3 year duration program often divided in 6 semesters. The average tuition fee for BA Sociology ranges from 15,000 INR to 2 Lakh INRfor three years depending upon the type of institution.

After a BA degree in Sociology, an individual can find employment in a variety of sectors ranging from government service to corporate world. Average entry level salary for BA Sociology graduates lies between 10,000 INR to 20,000 INR per month. 


The duration for a BA degree in Sociology is 3 years. Each year is divided in 2 semesters. For distance programs the minimum duration is 3 years and maximum duration is generally 6 years.

Sociology is a branch of study which investigates into multiple aspects of society and social behavior. BA Sociology Honors & BA Sociology Program

There are universities which offer two kind of undergraduate courses in Sociology. These are a BA Honors in Sociology and BA Program or BA Pass in Sociology. There is no substantial difference between the two courses. The core courses and electives generally remain the same. The only difference is that in an Honors course, a student has an option to specialize in one or more subject related to sociology.

So while a BA Program or BA Pass in Sociology student has to study all the general subjects of Sociology, a BA Honors in Sociology student has in-depth knowledge of the honors paper of their choice.

Eligibility Of the Bachelor of Arts [BA] {Hons.} (Sociology)

The basic eligibility for admission to BA Sociology program, is a pass in 10+2 or any intermediate level examination from a recognized board of education. Some colleges prefer students who have studied Sociology as one of the subjects in intermediate level. However, the course is open for students from any stream.

Students who have appeared in 10+2 or any other intermediate level examination and are awaiting results can also apply for the program and can be admitted on a provisional basis. 

How to Get Admission in Bachelor of Arts [BA] {Hons.} (Sociology)

The admission process for BA Sociology, generally begins in the month of May or June, after the declaration of 10+2 examination result. When the application process begins, students have to submit an application form to the respective universities. The application forms are available either online or offline or both.

After the application process is over, universities and colleges release their cut offs. Students who fulfill the minimum cut off percentage are then admitted to the BA Sociology program in respective colleges.

There are certain universities like Jamia Millia Islamia University, which conduct entrance test for admission to BA Sociology program.  The entrance test may have both objective and descriptive type questions. The test is of maximum 2 hours duration. The entrance test syllabus concerns the following topics:

  3. Logical Reasoning
  4. Social Awareness

Selection Criteria

The selection for BA Sociology program at universities where an entrance test is conducted, is based on the performance in the entrance test and marks scored in the qualifying exam, i.e., 10+2 exam.

The entrance test is of maximum 100 marks and the qualifying marks is set by universities respectively. Some universities may also have negative marking in the form of a deduction of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer. 

BA Sociology through Distance Mode

Students who wish to pursue BA Sociology through correspondence mode of education have ample options to choose from. Apart from IGNOU some of the universities which offer BA Sociology in distance mode are:

At IGNOU, there are two modes of admission – Formal and Non- Formal. While students who have successfully completed 10+2 examination are admitted in the formal program, students who have not cleared their 10+2 examination are admitted through the Non-Formal program. Such students have to clear the Bachelor Preparatory Program(BPP) first.
