How to prepare for BE Civil Engineering entrance examinations?

To help candidates prepare better and efficiently for the entrance examinations, the following pointers can be referred to.

  • Prepare a timetable for studying. Include each topic in every subject and stick to the timetable. This will ensure the entire syllabus is covered at least once. Allocate time daily to studies.
  • Clear up the basics. The basics will form the base for the more advanced chapters later on. A strong understanding of the basics will be useful.
  • Practice, practice, practice. Engineering entrance examinations are all about practice. Take mocks and attempt as many as sample papers as possible.
  • Allocate time separately for the more difficult topics. If needed, approach a teacher or a tutor to help go over the topics again.
  • Many toppers recommend depending on the NCERT books of the 10+2 levels. One must be thoroughly clear with the school books before purchasing more books.

How to get admission in a good BE Civil Engineering college?

To secure admission into a top-ranked BE Civil engineering college, a number of factors come into play. Some of the following tips will be helpful in that regard.

  • Be aware of the types of questions and the difficulty level of the questions asked in different entrance exams. Some papers are comparatively easier to attempt than the others. This will help in better preparation.
  • Since questions are asked from the syllabus covered at the 10+2 level of schooling, going over the material and notes would be sufficient. Revision of all basic concepts must be done.
  • Some papers have an English section and an Aptitude section. Preparation for these sections can be by practicing past papers.
  • Be aware of all dates and deadlines. Examination application dates, exam dates etc. are changed and advertised in all major newspapers. It is important to keep track of any such news.
  • Take a look at the daily news and affairs of the world regularly. Keeping up to date with the news will help in preparation for the exam and counseling round but also act as a break from studying.

Ques. Which is better, a B.Tech in civil engineering from NIT Hamirpur or from PEC Chandigarh?

● Top Answer By Admin on 04 May 21

Ans. My friends have been studying in both NIT Hamirpur and PEC Chandigarh and according to their first-hand experience, PEC Chandigarh holds an edge. Here’s why: It lies in a prime location viz. Chandigarh. The city has better and numerous opportunities. It is an education hub in the North, hence making it easier to plan and implement your higher education goals. There are ample coaching centers as well in case you want to prepare for government exams. PEC has better placement and internship options as well, again it is due to the location advantage. Categories Civil at NIT Hamirpur Civil at PEC Chandigarh Course Fee 6.86 lakh 6.39 lakh Placement Percentage 70-80% 85-90% Highest CTC 12 LPA 15 LPA Average CTC 5 LPA 6.5 LPA Recruiting Companies L&T, Accenture, Capgemini, Godrej, etc. Google, Amazon, Goldman Sachs,  Overall, while both the colleges offer good education, NIT holds a big brand name. However, factors like location and opportunities come first when in such a dilemma. Also, as you are getting the same branch in both the colleges, choose PEC Chandigarh any day.Read more

Ques. Should I choose IIT Bhubaneswar civil over NIT Trichy ECE?

● Top Answer By Keshav Jindal on 22 Apr 21

Ans. ECE is in any way superior to Civil Engineering. NIT Trichy is also a really good institute, so don't just go for the IIT tag. Taking Civil in a new IIT (or even in an older IIT) will limit your options, in terms of location or something else.  You might not get as many opportunities as you might get for ECE, given that the packages offered for ECE branches are comparatively always better.  Categories ECE at NIT Trichy Civil Engineering at IIT Bhubaneswar Course Fee 5.65 lakhs 8.52 lakhs Placement Percentage 95% 70% Highest CTC 44 LPA 39 LPA Average CTC 10-12 LPA 9 LPA Recruiting Companies Tech Mahindra, Texas Instruments, Qualcomm, etc. L&T, TCS, Schlumberger, Jacobs Engineering, etc. If you had the option of choosing a circuital branch in IIT BBS, then it would be highly recommended to you, but since you are considering Civil, it is a better choice.Read more

Ques. What is the placement strategy of the civil branch in BIT Sindri?

● Top Answer By Sandhya R on 21 Apr 21

Ans. There is no such thing as placement strategy but talking of placements, very few students of the civil branch are interested in it.  Most of the students go for IES or State government jobs.  The placement of core companies in campus placement do not prefer girls because of the security issues and therefore girls mostly prefer IT companies during placements.  In campus placement companies visit depends upon the concerned branches TPO. Students have to take place in soft companies. Many of them are placed in companies like IBM & TCS. India is a developing country and there is a huge requirement for Civil Engineers and will be in the coming future for Infrastructure development. So, it would be good, just stay focused on the core subject.Read more

Ques. Does NIT Surathkal have a good placement record for civil engineers?

● Top Answer By Keshav Jindal on 21 Apr 21

Ans. There is very little demand for civil engineers here in the Indian markets. Unfortunately, not many skilled civil engineers are output from any Indian engineering college.  The curriculum of all engineering colleges hasn’t been updated for over a decade and it is not at all in sync with the current needs and requirements of the civil industry. Most of the civil engineers who pass out from the reputed colleges across India are either offered computer programming jobs with a package of 5-10 LPA on an average or become managers in the industry. The reality of civil engineering in India is quite a sad sight to look at and the students are paying with their twisted career choices for it. There is no doubt to the fact that NIT Surathkal is an impressive institute with reputed faculty guiding the students, with an exception for the branch of civil engineering. Either the students are not able to develop sufficient interest in the same or the curriculum is not such that invokes interest or keeps them motivated enough. Moreover, it is also not in accordance with the industrial standards and needs.Read more

Ques. How is NIT Jamshedpur for civil engineering in terms of placement?

● Top Answer By Kiran Chugh on 20 Apr 21

Ans. The placement records for Civil Engineering in NIT Jamshedpur are not considered to be the best.  One of the primary reasons behind this is the lesser number of companies actually approaching any Civil Engineers at the end of the day.  Nearly 60% of the students who are pursuing civil engineering get placed. At the same time, the opportunities that other branches receive regarding their placements can be heightened up to 90%. Most of the civil engineers approach in opting for GATE preparations and later in their lives, go up to securing government jobs.  There are students who primarily did not take Civil engineering in their years of study and instead chose to opt for Metallurgy in the same institute they are in. Civil engineering has an average placement of almost 60-70% in most of the NITs. It is somewhat similar in NIT Jamshedpur too since overall, it is not deeply bad. But, at the same time, it is not particularly good as well. Your placement also partially depends on your CGPA too.  L&T alone visits the campus of NIT Jamshedpur every single year and selects 15 -20 students in an approximate count. So you have several other options open for you via GATE OR IES.Read more
