MBBS vs MD, medical aspirants is often confused between both the course since both the courses have their own approach in the medical industry, and making the right decision is crucial to complete their journey as a medical student.  

The full form of MBBS is Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. It is an undergraduate for Class 12 medical students to practice surgery and medicine throughout the country. Whereas, the full form of MD is doctorate of medicine. It is a postgraduate medical course offered to candidates who have completed their undergraduate medical degree.

What is MBBS?

MBBS is actually an abbreviation of, “Medicinae Baccalaureus Baccalaureus Chirurgiae”, which is a phrase in Latin. It is also referred to as Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery around the world. Admission to these courses is offered by NEET UG, JIPMER, and many other entrance exams in India.

MD is not an undergraduate degree rather a postgraduate degree in the field of Medicine. This means that a candidate can only become eligible for this course when they have completed their undergraduate degree which is the MBBS degree. Admission to this PG course is based on entrance exams like NEET PG, JIPMER PG, AIIMS PG, etc.

  • The MD degree holds quite a lot of value in itself and some even call it equal to Ph.D. in terms of the level of research. It is because every candidate completes their MD course right after the MBBS course in order to attain a specialization in a specific field of Medicine.
  • There are various specializations that candidates choose from such as Dentistry, Pediatrics, Gynecology, Obstetrics, Ophthalmology, and much more. The whole point behind the MD course is to turn the student into an expert or a specialist in the Medical Field of their choice.
  • The duration of this course is 3 years.

In India, the admission process solely depends on the entrance exam. NEET, which is the entrance exam for MBBS students witnessed more than 65000 students applying for the exam.
