B. Pharm. in Ayurveda: What is it all About?

The practice of Ayurveda is founded on the theory of ‘Tridosha’, that all life can be expressed in terms of the primary elements of air, land, fire, and water.

The imbalance of such elements brings about illness. For restoring these balances, the discipline employs several natural therapies such as massage, nutrition plans, aromatherapy, exercise yoga, colour therapy, music, meditation and ethical living.

Ayurvedic medicine is holistic, viewing the body and mind as a whole. This course not only treats a person's physical complaints, but also changes lifestyle practices to help maintain or improve health. According to Ayurveda, the five elements of nature combine in the body as three components, known as Vatta, Pitta, and Kapha. A balance of these doshas is thought to be required for optimal health.

Enrolled students are taught the origins of Ayurvedic medicine in the ancient healing system based on six philosophies that strive to achieve a balance between self and nature. This course examines the essence and terminology of concepts of Ayurveda, covering its history, evolution, ideology, and practices. The course explores the theories used in Ayurvedic medicine.

The practice is concerned with the constituting bio-energy and biological attributes of the human body. The course aims to familiarize students with concepts such as:

  • Role of the excretory system, tissue systems, and organs in influencing health
  • Immunology and metabolism.

Ayurveda has been the main guiding force in drug discovery as a traditional system of medicine.

Ayurveda is based on age-long indigenous knowledge, which has been orally transmitted through generations, and sustained in tradition.
