Bachelor of Technology [B.Tech] (Power Engineering)

Bachelor of Technology in Power Engineering or B.Tech. Power Engineering as it is famously known in the academic world is a four years long undergraduate engineering program.  It mainly focuses on making people aware about the power industry and its working. The minimum eligibility requisite for this program is a 10+2 pass out with a minimum aggregate of 40-45%.

B.Tech. Power Engineering is offered by numerous government and public colleges/universities. In order to earn the degree, one has to undertake and pass theory exams, practical exams, viva tests and undergo industrial training and submit projects towards the end of the course.

The tuition fee for B.Tech. Power Engineering ranges from 2.3 to 9 Lakh INR for four years. In some private colleges, it might surpass the 10 Lakh mark after the inclusion of lab fees, mess fees and hostel fees.

A B.Tech. Power Engineering graduate can get hired in companies like NTPC, Reliance Power, Tata Power etc. and expect a salary between  20,000 INR to 30,000 INR per month.  An individual can work as a Power Electronics Engineer Power, Engineer Test Engineer - Power Electronics, Engineering Supervisor – Power and Power Transformer Executives etc.

Eligibility Of the Bachelor of Technology [B.Tech] (Power Engineering)

The candidates who have completed their 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as their subjects are eligible for admission to this course. 

How to Get Admission in Bachelor of Technology [B.Tech] (Power Engineering)

After the eligibility criteria is met, the candidates having a valid score in JEE Main are considered for admission to this course on the basis of a Rank and score cut off in the respective colleges.

In some colleges like University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Dehradun, they provide admissions both on the basis of Board Merit and JEE Mains Merit. In order to avail the Board merit, one has to have a minimum of 80% marks at Higher & Senior Secondary level (10th & 12th) and a minimum 80% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics at Senior Secondary level (12th class).

In some colleges like NPTI –New Delhi, admission is through Common Entrance Test (CET) conducted by GGSIPU (Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University) in May/June every year.

Entrance Test

JEE Main: Application forms for JEE Main are available in the month of December and the exam is conducted in the month of April.

GGSIPU-CET: Application forms for GGSIPU CET are available in the month of January and the exam is conducted in the month of April. Results for CET are declared by the end of May.

WBJEE: Through WBJEE, students are admitted to the Power Engineering program offered at NPTI Durgapur. Application forms for WBJEE are available in the month of January and exam is conducted in the month of May.

Syllabus for Entrance Test

The syllabus for entrance exam for admission to B.Tech. Power Engineering consists of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Questions are of 10+2 level and test a candidates aptitude for engineering and technology stream.

Lateral Entry

Certain institutes like GGSIP University and NPTI also offer Lateral Entry to the second or third year of the program. For lateral entry a candidate must be a diploma holder in electrical or mechanical engineering or other allied disciplines from a recognized institution. For lateral entry to NPTI-Durgapur, a student must appear in WB-JELET.

For lateral entry to B.Tech. Power Engineering program offered at GGSIPU or NPTI Delhi, a student has to appear for LEBTECH conducted by GGSIPU
