Three Myths Busted

Myth Fact
“Only science students can pursue GNM.” Class 12 with English and 40% is the baseline rule; science is preferred, not compulsory. State-specific rules can be more restrictive.
“NEET is compulsory for GNM.” No. Verified 2026 routes include state GNM entrance tests and merit-based counselling; there is no single nationwide NEET-based GNM route.
“GNM is still a 3.5-year course.” The regular GNM duration is 3 years under the current programme structure.

Ques. Can a commerce student pursue GNM?

Ans. Yes, where the state/institute follows the baseline eligibility. Commerce candidates with English and the required aggregate may apply. Some state systems may give preference to Physics, Chemistry and Biology candidates first. Kerala's 2026 process, for example, considers other streams if sufficient PCB candidates are unavailable.

Ques. Is NEET required for GNM admission in 2026?

Ans. No. NEET is not the standard nationwide GNM entrance examination. GNM admissions are conducted through state entrance tests, counselling or qualifying-exam merit, depending on the state.

Ques. Which entrance exams are important for GNM in 2026?

Ans. Verified routes include WBJEEB ANM(R) & GNM, UPGET, Jharkhand GNM Entrance Competitive Examination, and Bihar DCECE (PM). There is no single all-India GNM entrance examination.

Ques. What is a good score or rank for GNM entrance exams?

Ans. There is no common national cutoff. A competitive rank depends on the examination, category, number of seats, college preferences and counselling round. Students should use the current year's official merit list and opening/closing ranks rather than relying on an old fixed score.

Ques. What are the GNM fees in India?

Ans. Fees differ significantly. Among leading current college listings, total GNM course fees range from roughly INR 60,000 to INR 4 lakh. Government programmes can be much cheaper; one verified Kerala government 2026 example lists a course fee of INR 5,300, with other costs separate.

Ques. Which GNM colleges are comparatively budget-friendly?

Ans. Among the current listed examples, Tata Main Hospital School of Nursing – INR 60,000 total and CMC Vellore – INR 1.12 lakh total are on the lower-fee side. Government nursing schools can cost less depending on the state and category.

Types of Admission Routes in India

  1. State-Level Entrance Examination: States such as West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Bihar use GNM-specific or paramedical/nursing entrance routes, including WBJEEB ANM(R) & GNM, UPGET, Jharkhand GNM Entrance and DCECE (PM). Admission normally follows rank-based counselling and seat allotment.
  2. Merit-Based Admission: Some state systems use Class 12 marks rather than a separate entrance examination. Kerala's 2026 government GNM process prepares the rank list from final-year qualifying-exam marks.
  3. Counselling-Based Admission: Entrance-rank or qualifying-merit candidates register choices, undergo document checks and receive seats according to rank, category, available seats and preferences. Kerala's 2026 prospectus explicitly uses rank + online options + centralised allotment.

General Nursing and Midwifery Admission Process

Admission Step
Qualifying Examination: Class 12/10+2 from a recognised board with English and typically at least 40% aggregate.
Eligible Streams: Science is preferred, but arts/commerce/other streams can be eligible under the baseline rule if English and minimum marks requirements are met; individual state rules must also be satisfied.
Age: Baseline nursing-council eligibility generally prescribes 17–35 years; state prospectuses may specify their own applicable age conditions.
Major Entrance Routes: WBJEEB ANM(R) & GNM, UPGET, Jharkhand GNM Entrance and Bihar DCECE (PM), depending on the state.
Entrance Result: Download rank/result and check eligibility for the counselling round.
Counselling/Application: Register online, enter preferred institutions and courses, and follow the applicable state counselling schedule.
Document Verification: Class 10 and 12 certificates, identity proof, photographs, category/domicile certificates where applicable, medical fitness documents and other prescribed certificates.
Seat Confirmation: Accept the allotted seat and pay the prescribed admission/course fee within the deadline.
Merit Route: Where an entrance examination is not used, qualifying-exam marks may determine the rank. Kerala government GNM admissions for 2026 use this model through centralised allotment.

Ques. Can a GNM graduate apply for Nursing Officer or Staff Nurse jobs?

Ans. Yes, for vacancies that explicitly accept GNM and the required nursing registration. Government and hospital recruitment notifications may additionally require registration, experience, age limits or other conditions, so eligibility must be checked post-wise.

Ques. GNM vs B.Sc. Nursing: Which course is longer?

Ans. GNM is 3 years, while a standard B.Sc. Nursing is 4 years. GNM is a diploma route; B.Sc. Nursing is an undergraduate degree. GNM graduates can later enter the degree pathway through Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing when eligible.

Ques. GNM vs ANM: What is the main difference?

Ans. GNM is a 3-year programme leading towards Registered Nurse and Registered Midwife registration, while ANM is a shorter nursing/midwifery programme focused more strongly on community and primary-level care.

Ques. What can I study after GNM?

Ans. The most common academic progression is Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing – 2 years. Eligible nurses can also pursue 1-year post-basic specialty diplomas in areas such as critical care, emergency nursing, operation-room nursing, neonatal nursing or psychiatric nursing.

Ques. Can I do M.Sc. Nursing directly after GNM?

Ans. No, not directly under the standard eligibility. Candidates generally need B.Sc. Nursing or Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing and must meet the prescribed registration, marks and experience requirements for M.Sc. Nursing.

Ques. Can GNM graduates work abroad?

Ans. Yes, potentially, but GNM by itself does not give automatic permission to practise overseas. Nurses normally have to satisfy the destination country's nursing-regulator requirements, credential assessment, registration/licensing examination, language requirements and visa rules.

FAQs

Ques. What is the GNM course duration in 2026?

Ans. GNM is a 3-year diploma programme. The current programme structure is no longer the older 3.5-year format.

Ques. What is the minimum Class 12 score required for GNM?

Ans. The baseline eligibility is generally 40% in 10+2 with English, along with the required English marks/recognition conditions. Individual states or institutions can prescribe additional criteria.

Ques. Can an arts student apply for GNM?

Ans. Yes. Science is preferred under the baseline nursing council eligibility but is not compulsory. Arts students with English and the required marks can be eligible, subject to the specific state prospectus.

Ques. What is the average starting salary after GNM?

Ans. An early-career range of about INR 2.4 LPA–INR 3.5 LPA is realistic for many nursing roles in India. ICU, emergency, home care, city and employer types can shift the salary higher or lower.

Ques. What foreign salary or package can a GNM graduate expect?

Ans. There is no reliable single foreign package in INR. Overseas earnings depend on the country, whether the GNM qualification is accepted for registration, licence status, employer, speciality and experience. Students should compare the licensed-nurse salary in the intended destination rather than treating an advertised “foreign package” as guaranteed.

Ques. Is NIOS or open-school Class 12 accepted for GNM?

Ans. The baseline eligibility recognises NIOS and recognised State Open School qualifications, provided the prescribed English and marks requirements are met. State-specific admission rules should still be checked.

Ques. Is GNM only for female candidates?

Ans. No, not nationwide. Gender rules can differ by state or seat pool. For example, West Bengal's GNM route includes male and female candidates, while specified Bihar 2026 GNM seat-matrix entries are marked for girls only.

Ques. Which GNM specialisation is most popular?

Ans. GNM itself does not normally offer formal admission-level specialisations. Common clinical focus areas include medical-surgical nursing, maternal and child health, community health, mental health, emergency care and critical care. Formal speciality qualifications are generally pursued later through post-basic programmes.

Faculty

The faculty of jamia hamdard University is ok-ok. Some are very good and some are just disgusting.. In my case faculty-student relationship was good.. because my course faculty was very helpful and supportive. Whenever I got some queries they always help in a good manner. The most favourite faculty for me was my anatomy teacher, she was not just my teacher she was also the incharge of my admission. As we know we get some problems during admission process and at that time we just a good faculty to make us understand and she was the one who literally help me out with these problems. Like other colleges the exam pattern and timings is same but as we know there are some regular tests which happend every other day or sometimes daily in case of examination.

Fees and Financial Aid

The year-wise fees for my course (DGNM) is around 1.25 lakh, although they show 65,000 in their prospectus but after getting admission they add charges like dress, transport in case of internship which start in 2 or 3rd year they charge it's fees from first year and the course, library, campus, security charges.. these all charges together make 1at year fee around 1.25 lakh. Tution fee is 65000 Admission fee is 1500 (one time) There are some scholarships as well which you will get in 2nd year based on your performance attendance etc but it will just cost around 10k to 15k only. Well this was my experience of my course. Ho you find your answers in this paragraph and rest you will get to know at the time of admission.

Faculty

The faculty is always there for the students and helps students in any need. All the faculties were good in there on way, always there for the students but i would like to give a special thanks to Maam Premo Devi vice principal of Apollo school of Nursing without her help it would have not been easy for us and all the students of our batch is really grateful and thankful to her. Thanks to her we were able to pass with no back paper... There is no particular faculty that I don't like. Everyone was really helpful and loving.. There is a total of 3 exams(1st year, 2nd year, 3rd year) and its different for every student as far how they study and how they appear in the exam. Failing in exam depends upon the students but in our batch the record is really less, plus we get a chance to appear for supplemental exam.

Course Curriculum Overview

The reason why I choose this field was because of my mother as she was a nurse as well and also I was thinking very hard about what to do after my school and right at that moment I got this opportunity so I thought let's not regret anything later. We had a lot of practical and theoretical discussions about everything soo I think it made us pretty confident about our skills and we were able to use everything in our internship too. As for the teaching methods I think the college or the institution can do better in hiring better or experienced candidates/teachers because the students need to learn and understand what the teacher is teaching .The exams would last for 3 hours in which we had to finish writing our exams, which was very hard because the answers were Soo long and we had to finish writing them in just 3 hours . Soo yes I think it was difficult but I have no regrets and I think I did great in my exams .

Faculty

The number of students were pretty large than of the faculties the student and faculty ratio used to be 5:70 so i think is pretty bad. Some of the faculty members were very nice and sweet but some of them were strict and hard on the students which is pretty reasonable and understandable as a teacher you need to be strict sometimes. Our Principal and one of the teacher named Miss Reena were Soo good to us and we got to learn a lot from them. Always grateful for what they've done for us As for the exams they were pretty tough. Nursing exams are never easy , but I tried my best to study and I think I did well in exams. We used to have our exams around late October to early November. I think one third of the students would fail the exams but we had this thing called supplementary exams which you can give later for the subject you failed which I think is a good aid .
