    MA or Master of Arts Degree derived from the latin word “Magister Artium” is a 2 year postgraduate degree in the field of Humanities, Arts & Liberal Arts.

    Students who have completed a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree with a minimum of 50% or equivalent study this course to have better career prospects.

    Students can pursue this course in a full time mode or part time mode. Distance education option is also available in many colleges, including IGNOU which is considered a popular option among students for correspondence and distance learning.

    ALERT: IPU CET 2020 dates have been revised by GGSIPU due to extension in the lockdown period in wake of COVID-19 pandemic. Students can now register for the exam until May 25, 2020.

    Candidates aspiring to pursue admission in an MA course are required to fulfill the following eligibility criteria:

    • Candidates should have successfully completed their Bachelor's degree (preferably Bachelor of Arts) of a minimum 3 or 4 years duration (10+2+3 or 10+2+4). The Bachelor's degree should be from a university that is recognized by the UGC (University Grants Commission) of India.
    • A minimum of 50% or its equivalent must be secured by the students at graduation level. The cutoff varies from college to college. It could be 55% or 60% as well. There’s a 5% relaxation for all those candidates who belong to SC/ST/OBCs and differently-abled categories.
    • Students who are in their final year of their Bachelor's degree are also eligible to apply.

    Colleges depend on two kinds of admission processes to take in students. These processes are admission through Entrance Examination and admission through Direct Admission:

    • Entrance Examination: Entrance Examinations are conducted by respective colleges like Delhi University, IP University, JNU to take in students according to the performance on these Entrance Exams.
    • Direct Admission: Colleges like Amity University take in students through the Direct Admission mode, where the students are judged based on their marks obtained during the final Bachelor Examination. The  students have to give Personal Interview where the college understands the students dreams and interests.

    There are many entrance exams that students need to clear before getting admission into an MA course. Such exams can be at national level, state level or university level.

    After the examinations, a merit list is generated and candidates who fulfill all the required admission criteria of the college are generally offered final admission into the course.

    Some of the common MA exams are IPU CET, JNUEE, DUET, TISSNET, PUSET, etc.

    • IPU CET: This is an university level entrance examination conducted every year in the month of May by IP University, Delhi for admissions into many UG & PG courses including Master of Arts degree courses.

    The exam duration is 3 hours, and includes subject based questions testing student’s knowledge and understanding of the selected course subject.

    The date of this exam was May 15, 2020 which has been postponed due to Coronavirus and lockdown extension in India. The authorities will notify the students via email and text message about the exam data as soon as it is decided.

    • BHU PET: This exam is a university level entrance examination conducted by Banaras Hindu University (BHU) which offers many postgraduate courses in the fields of arts, commerce, social sciences, agriculture, and environment.

    The mode of exam is offline and the medium is English and Hindi. It is usually MCQ based and has to be attempted within 3 hours.     • PU CET: This is a state level entrance examination conducted by Panjab University, Chandigarh offering admission into many UG & PG courses. The exam is MCQ based and usually conducted in the month of May or June.

    Entrance Exam Preparation Tips

    A Masters of Arts degree enables you to master the course in which you have completed your graduation, therefore it requires some basic preparation since most of the exams are subject knowledge based.

    Hence, your subject knowledge should be strong and you should possess basic general awareness. Other than this, you should be comfortable with answering MCQ based questions within a limited time.

    • Make a proper time table and follow it regularly to cover the full syllabus on time.
    • Attempt previous papers and sample papers for better understanding of the exam structure.
    • Observe the previous year question papers to catch up with the changing pattern every year.
    • Practice and appear for online mock tests. You are expected to give at least 8-12 mock tests to get a hold of the exam pattern.

    MA Course from Distance Education mode is usually taken by those people who are either working or who are not able to attend lectures due to some other reasons.

    There is no age bar for distance learning. The mode of admission is either based on merit or through university level entrance exams.
