MA Bengali is a 2 years full time post graduate course which is divided into 4 semesters. The module provides an introduction to Bengali language with emphasis on practical written and spoken Bengali. This study covers script and sounds, tenses, verb morphology, noun phrase structure and case, and adverbs, postpositions, adjectives, conjunctions and basic sentence structure. This communicative practice is established through learning language around dialogues and role plays dealing with a range of everyday situations.
The module provides students with a basic knowledge of Bengali and practice of using Bengali in a variety of everyday situations. This study allows students to interact with Bengali speakers in Bengali and to acquire familiarity with the Bengali script. This course provides students with a basis to approach research topics relating to Bengali literature and culture.

An eligibility criterion for MA in Bengali is passed 3 years B.A Honours degree in Bengali or in comparative literature from a recognized university with at least 55% marks in honours papers.

Group wise Entrance Test for Non applicants for selection in 40% of total seats will be held. Entrance Test will be of one hour duration. The marks for Entrance Test will be of 100 marks. Number of questions in test will be of 50 and each question should have four options of answers of which one will be correct answer. In exam for each correct answer scoring will be degree marks and negative marking of half marks for each wrong answer and for no try there will be no marks reduction. Selection for 40% of such seat in each course will be made on the basis of marks obtained in the entrance test only. In exam there is a tie of marks obtained in the written entrance test amongst the candidates then the candidates with less negative marking will be placed in higher position in the merit list than the other candidate.
