M.E. Design Engineering: Eligibility

Candidate must have passed the B.E/B.Tech or equivalent examination in Mechanical/Production/Manufacturing/Design and Development /Industrial engineering with at least 60% (relaxable for reserved category candidates) of the marks from a recognized state/private/deemed or central University

  • He/She shall not be having any backlog or compartment in any of the subject/Subjects at UG level that is yet to be cleared at the time of taking admissions.
  • Apart from the above-mentioned eligibility criteria’s various colleges and institutes may have their own additional criteria’s which the students would have to satisfy in order to take admission (like work experience of certain years).
  • In case of reserved category students, they would have to present their reservation certificates issued by the competent authorities in order to avail the benefits applicable to them.
  • Most of the Institute give admissions through Common Entrance Test (CET) (like GATE). To get admissions in these institutes candidates would have to qualify the respective entrance exam by securing minimum qualifying marks.

The process of admission to the course involves a common entrance test based admission process (as seen across various Universities and colleges in the country) as well as a merit-based mechanism (as seen in certain colleges).

  • Most of the Universities/Colleges conduct a common entrance test for admission into M.E courses (like BITSAT HD) or take admissions through commonly held entrance exam like GATE. Hence students would have to make an application for such exams.
  • Students have to qualify these exams (for which they should be eligible to appear) in order to get admission in the course.
  • After the conduct of the test, a merit list of finally qualified candidates is prepared and candidates are invited for counseling cum admission process by the respective university or college.
  • After counseling cum admission process final allotment of seats to the candidate takes place and the candidate is asked to deposit the fee for the course and register for the respective academic year.

Ans. IIT Bhubaneswar offers decent placements to the MTech Mechanical students. IIT Bhubaneswar has also witnessed increasing placements in the coming years.  Placements: The institute offers decent placement for postgraduate courses. The overall statistics for MTech placement decreases a little due to the fewer placement opportunities in the Civil Engineering branch. However, MTech Mechanical Engineering has decent placement records.  M.Tech placement for a mechanical design according to the 2020 statistics is around 80%.  Around 53% of students have been placed in the core companies like Tata Steel, L&T, etc. In IIT Bhubaneswar, the mechanical department is one of the strong domains of all the branches. With the best faculty for labs and machinery, IIT Bhubaneswar has all the perks for its mechanical department. Ans. Yes, there is a good chance that you will get a seat in IIT Bhubaneswar core mechanical department. In IIT Bhubaneswar, the selection is based on 70% weightage for the GATE score and 30% weightage for the performance in the Written Test and Interview. The department has 3 main branches i.e. Design, Thermal, and Manufacturing. The cutoff is most likely to be, Design>Thermal >Manufacturing in all IITs. As design seats get filled first, then thermal and then manufacturing. There are 18 seats for both Mechanical Systems Design and Thermal Science and Engineering in IIT Bhubaneswar. The basic eligibility criteria are 60% marks in B. Tech./B. E. in Mechanical Engineering with a valid GATE score. Although cutoff changes every year for each branch but based on last year’s record,  in 2020, the expected GATE cutoff for Mechanical System Design(GEN) is 595- 605 in IIT Bhubaneswar. Ans. The course of M.tech in industrial engineering from IIT BHU should be preferred if you are looking for a good job at the end of your program. The institute provides an ample amount of opportunity to students for placements and offers good packages. In 2019 the average placement package was 8.19 LPA. On the other hand, Designing is a core branch in mechanical engineering. You should opt for M.tech in design from IIT Bhubaneswar only if you are interested in pursuing higher studies after the completion of the program. The placement of the institute is decent. According to 2019 placement statistics, 68% of M.Tech students got placed. The average CTC offered was around 11.44 LPA.Read more
