M. Sc. Geology or Master of Science in Geology is a postgraduate degree program. It is a program for two years and is the scientific study of the workings and design of the earth and its layers. The basic eligibility for this course is Bachelor’s degree in science. Admission is done either on the basis of entrance test depending on the criteria. Average tuition fee for the course ranges between 25 to 50 thousand in most of the colleges offering this course.

This course deals with the detailed study of the various layers of the earth, the tectonic plates and the history of the evolution of the surface of the earth. M.Sc. The minimum eligibility criteria for admission to M. Sc. Geology is that the student must have a B. Sc. (Hons.) degree with Geology as one of the major subjects in their undergraduate program from any recognized university with around 50%- 60% marks in the main subject depending on the university a candidate is applying to.

The major mode of admission to M. Sc. Geology is through the entrance exam conducted by the respective university and colleges. The general format of the entrance exam is objective type multiple choice questions and on the basis of the performance in the entrance exam, students are granted admission.

While, there are some colleges like St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai which takes students on the basis of their performance in the undergraduate program. The admission is purely on the basis of merit in colleges which do not conduct entrance exams.

The colleges which conduct the entrance exam select the students on the basis of their performance in the entrance exam. The entrance exams test their basic knowledge about geology. The colleges which do not conduct entrance exam select candidates on the merit basis and their criterion of selection is based on the academic achievements of the students and the marks obtained by them in their undergraduate course.

There are certain institutes like Delhi University which take students directly on the merit basis despite the entrance exam being one of the major modes of admission process. The students must then fulfill the criteria of minimum 60% aggregate marks in the undergraduate honours degree program.
