Three Myths Busted
  • Myth: Only B.Sc Mathematics graduates can pursue M.Sc Mathematics. Some institutes accept other bachelor's degrees when the candidate has sufficient Mathematics background; Chennai Mathematical Institute, for example, accepts BA/B.Sc/BE/B.Tech or equivalent with a strong Mathematics background.
  • Myth: Every M.Sc Mathematics admission requires an entrance exam. Some university-affiliated college systems use qualifying-degree marks for centralised PG allotment.
  • Myth: M.Sc Mathematics is useful only for teaching. Graduates also move into analytics, actuarial work, finance, risk, operations research, computing and research.

Ques. Can a student without a B.Sc Mathematics degree apply for M.Sc Mathematics?

Ans. It depends on the university. Many programmes require Mathematics as a major/core subject or a minimum number of Mathematics credits. Some institutes are more flexible; Chennai Mathematical Institute accepts candidates with BA, B.Sc, BE, B.Tech or equivalent qualifications if they have a strong Mathematics background.

Ques. Can B.Tech or BE graduates pursue M.Sc Mathematics?

Ans. Yes, at selected institutions. Eligibility depends on the amount of Mathematics studied during the bachelor's programme. Candidates should check the exact subject-credit requirement before applying.

Ques. Is CUET PG compulsory for M.Sc Mathematics?

Ans. No. CUET PG is important for universities such as the University of Delhi, Banaras Hindu University and several other participating universities, but IITs generally use IIT JAM, while institutes such as CMI and CUSAT have their own admission examinations.

Ques. What is a good CUET PG score for M.Sc Mathematics?

Ans. There is no single safe score for all universities. Admission scores change by university, college, category, seat availability and counselling round. Students should compare their score with the current programme-specific allocation or cutoff lists rather than relying on one national target.

Ques. What is the IIT JAM rank required for M.Sc Mathematics?

Ans. There is no common rank applicable to every IIT. Closing ranks vary by IIT, category, programme and admission round. Candidates must also satisfy the Minimum Educational Qualification of the specific programme.

Ques. Is 50% in graduation enough to get admission to M.Sc Mathematics?

Ans. A 50% aggregate may satisfy the minimum eligibility at some universities, but eligibility does not guarantee admission. Entrance score, category, Mathematics credits, merit position and available seats can all affect selection.

Ques. Which are budget-friendly colleges for M.Sc Mathematics?

Ans. Several public colleges have comparatively low listed total course fees. Examples include PSGR Krishnammal College for Women at about INR 28K, Ramjas College at INR 32.8K, Miranda House at INR 32K and Kirori Mal College at INR 33.8K. Fee structures can change by academic session, and additional university charges may apply.

Ques. Which M.Sc Mathematics specialisation is popular for private-sector jobs?

Ans. Applied Mathematics, Computational Mathematics, Operations Research, Mathematical Modelling and Financial Mathematics are useful for analytics, technology, finance and quantitative roles. Students should combine Mathematics with programming, statistics and data-analysis skills for a wider range of opportunities.

Total no of faculties is 9 along with 7-10 PhD scholars . The total no of students in my batch is 45 which makes proff : student as 1:5. Faculty members are better than any other universities. The faculty here are eager to take extra classes even after this tight 10-4 scheduled classes just to clarify our doubts and help us when we are lost in endless confusions. Soubhik sir for linear algebra and Shyamal sir for topology and real analysis are the best proff so far along with Poonamchandra sir for Differential equations . Not to mention about the other professors , every one is best in their own courses . Our HOD being one the 2% top scientists recognised by Stanford University in the year 2025 , Proff Binod Chandra Tripathi sir is one of the most humble and down to earth proff ,one has ever seen . Being under his guidance feels nothing less than being preveliged for taking course in Tripura University.

Fees and Financial Aid

Fee structure in my course include ?6000 in first sem and ?5500 in the second semester, approx ?5500 in the third and fourth semester each ,hence approx ?22500 for two years. Tuition fees of each semester is ?1000 , alongside registration fees of ?2000 , addmission fees of ?7500 , development fees of ?1000, lab fees ?500, wifi fees ?300 . Since I'm general , so no as such scholarship except for the central government NSP scheme for pay graduate students. Other than that students can opt for North East scholarship scheme and also for single girl child scholarship scheme . OBC/SC/ST students can opt for their category scholarships also and batch toppers are given liberty to opt for more than one scholarship, rest all the students can opt for scholarships is the criteria prevails .

There is around 400 students in 4 different sections faculty to students ratio is probably 1:20 Most of them are good but mostly teachers are very strict Applied teachers are mostly chills while pure teachers are strict if u don't attend class u have some work for that teacher they support u for those u have to maintain good relation for proper attending classes. Sumit Sir is very very good teacher in whole department he is very supportive and their methods of teaching is awesome. One teacher is very rude one time when I asked him for sign in NOC form for intership he didn't sign the form. Exams are very toxic here 100 marks are totally exam based there is a class test for every subject and mid sem examination and final examination u faces atleast 1-2 exam/test every month. Paper level is moderate to difficult if u don't studied u definitely got failed because teacher's marking scheme is very strict. About 40% students failed every semester. This course is good for research who have to pursue PhD

Course Curriculum Overview

I completed my bachelor in Physics Chemistry and Mathematics Among these three I liked Maths that's why I choose this course I also heard that maths is best for co-operate industry also. Real world application is MSc Mathematics curriculum strengthens core concepts and analytical skills, preparing students well for PhD, research, higher studies, and real-world problem-solving.The curriculum could include more practical applications and computational tools, while teaching can focus on interactive sessions, real-world examples, and project-based learning for better understanding. Every year examination is conducted two times semester wise and timings of examination is 3 hours if anyone have to passed with good marks they have to studied very hard because exam level is moderate to high and less chances of repetition of questions

Campus Life

We celebrate our annual day in the month of April, and all relegious festivals, intra college fest in August and intercollege fest in February. Our college library has vast source. People from other college come just to visit our college library because of the different and vast sources of books, question papers, journels etc. Each class room are connected with projecter for live learning. We have good sports mentor and good equipments and ground . Apart from studies they encourage in sports. We have our student portal from college to acces old question papers e- resource book etc

Faculty

Currently there are six teachers taking class, including lab. There is a good relationship between faculties and students. The faculties are also easily approachable. From these 6 people , I like Algebra, topology, measure and integration faculties because they are sweet, friendly, they make the subject easy and interesting. I don't like probablity and statistics and partial differential equaton teachers, because they are always irritating and confuse us the syllabus. There are 6 exams this semester and results aren't announced yet

Ques. What are the questions asked in an interview for an integrated PhD (maths) at IISc Bangalore?

● Top Answer By Monika Saha on 18 Jul 23

Ans. One of my friends appeared for the integrated Ph.D. Math at IISc Bangalore and shared her experience of the same. A total of 72 students had been shortlisted for the interview and her interview took place on the last day. As she entered the room, they asked for her introduction and her interest to which she told them it was analysis. She was asked the following questions Construct a differential function satisfying the following conditions, f(1)=f(-1)=o; f(0)=1, and f(x) is zero everywhere except (-1, 1) Group theory question wherein they gave her an order of the group and asked to check the elements of some order The entire interview was based on the above questions which my friend was not able to answer most of the time and thus did not get selected. However, she learned a lot from that interview and summed the entire experience in these points She learned a new problem-solving approach that requires breaking the problem into small cases. The panelists here are very friendly and you can even postpone your interview till the last day if you are not comfortable. The questions asked to a candidate are never repeated for other candidates.  So, overall the experience was very knowledgeable and I hope it's so for you too. Read more
