Some leading colleges offering Ph.D. Biostatistics include:

Biostatistics is a branch of statistics which finds its application to a wide range of topics in Biology. It encapsulates design and framework of Biological experiments primarily focussing on medicine, pharmacy, agriculture, fishery and other such substreams of Biology.

Institutes conduct their own entrance exam followed by interview and case studies, on the basis of which candidates are offered admission to the respective streams and departments. Admission to Ph.D. Biostatistics course could also be merit-based, i.e. on basis of candidates’ marks scored by aspirants in their qualifying exam.

The curriculum of Ph.D. Biostatistics includes collection, summarization, and analysis of results/data from the experiments performed. Proper conclusions are derived from the result obtained and relevant judgments are made.

The fees for Ph.D. Biostatistics course depend on the institute, however, it ranges from INR 15,000 to 40,000 per year. Students pursuing the course may find opportunities in careers such as Research Officers, Biostatistician, Scientist, Statistician. The most common path for students in Biostatistics department is academia, industry, and government. The average salary offered to the students start from INR 4 LPA.

Ph.D. Biostatistics: What is it about?

Ph.D. Biostatistics course offers students advanced learning through subjects Descriptive Statistics, Demography, Probability, Data Management, Sampling, Genetics, Epidemiology and other such areas of Study. Subjects that fall under the curriculum/syllabus of Biostatistics are:

  • Sample Theory
  • Biostatistical Models
  • Biostatistical Computing
  • Public Health
  • Stochastic Modelling & Process
  • Experiments Design & Analysis
  • Non Parametric Statistics

Students well adept at Ph.D. Biostatistics course will find themselves landing jobs in the R&D departments of leading pharma and medical companies. The students will also be very well acquainted with finding a solution to public health problems. Even though R&D is the major sector which students prefer, another large majority of Ph.D. Biostatistics students also enter the teaching industry thus imparting their knowledge to the next in line graduates, postgraduate and doctorates of the industry.

The principal objective of Ph.D. Biostatistics is to make students adept in deriving conclusions and judgments on the basis of data/results obtained from a set of experiments. This, in turn, will enable the students to turn professionals and create an ecosystem in an environment/surrounding unknown to them and understand it on the basis of iterations of experiments run. Candidates will get better assessment of the course upon going through following detailed objectives of the course.

  • Applying probabilistic and statistical model and computing methods to develop a new statistical approach towards a medical public health problem.
  • Collaborating and communicating with scientists and assisting them in reading and deriving meaning from the results of experiments.
  • Training health professionals, research scientists, graduate students in the field of biostatistics.
  • Applying modern theoretical statistical and computational methods to analyze complex medical problems.

Hi Patel, candidates who have done graduation (in any stream) with an aggregate of 50% (45% for reserved categories) are eligible. Therefore, if you satisfy the percentage criteria, then, you are eligible to apply for admission. Eligible students will however have to appear in an entrance exam as admission is done on the basis of merit in the entrance test, personal interview and merit in the previous qualifying examination taken all together.

For further details, you can check MSU, Baroda Admission Procedure from here.
