Updated On - March 9th 2018 by SOUMYA SEHGAL

CAT Exam Pattern has always been unpredictable. IIMs take the liberty of changing it whenever they feel necessary. In 2009, CAT became a computer based test of 150 minutes. In 2015, for the first non-MCQs were included in the test. Test takers were required to type in the answer in the box provided. Non- MCQs had no negative marking to them. The duration of test was increased to 180 minutes with sectional time limit of 60 minutes each.

Type of Questions in CAT

  • In 2015, CAT question paper was divided into three sections –Verbal and Reading Comprehension, Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Ability.
  • CAT has followed the pattern since the. Each section had both MCQs and Non-MCQs.
  • The number of non-MCQs can range from 8-10 per section.
  • Since there is no negative marking for non-MCQs, it is advised to attempt all of them.

Strategy towards the CAT 2018 Question Paper

  • CAT requires one to attempt maximum questions in as less a time as possible.
  • Doing so requires a strategic planning while attempting the CAT question paper.
  • Given below are some tested strategies for CAT aspirants to solve attempt the test optimally.
  1. Practice Mock Tests:
  • Practice as many mock tests as possible.
  • Get a balance between speed and accuracy.
  • Solving these questions will help in getting an idea of the type of questions asked
  1. Use method of elimination:
  • Eliminating the options which are less likely to be correct is a method which helps in increasing the speed of solving questions.
  • In this method, all such options which are entirely out of chance are eliminated and the correct answer is chosen from the options left.
  • This method can be mastered with constant practice.
  • For example: 625X22=

options “b”, “c” and “d” can be eliminated since the any number ending with 5 when multiplied with any other number can never have a product ending with 2 or 4. So the only option left is “a” which also happens to be the correct answer.

  1. Selecting the right questions:
  • Candidates appearing for CAT 2018 should know which questions to attempt first, which later and which ones to abandon altogether.
  • The selection committee doesn’t expect the candidates to solve all 100 questions.
  • Candidates are the scored for the number of questions answered correctly and not the type of question solved.
  • Go for all the easy first, then solve the ones which are moderate.
  • Lastly, if time permits try and attempt the difficult ones.
