Common Mistakes to avoid while attempting Quant Section

As per CAT experts and Toppers’ statement following common mistakes are done usually made by candidates while attempting CAT aptitude test.

  1.  Do not attach to any question for more than 1.5 minutes

If one cannot understand where and how to start after reading the question for more than once, quickly give it a shot with not spending more than 90 seconds on it. The point is not to get entangled in the question and lose the track of your time.

  1. Double-check while solving (to reduce errors and use this in formula-based questions)

When one has decided his formula and approach, just before he inserts the numbers from the question statement, verify the substitutions. This will reduce the chances of any silly mistakes that one might commit during the steps. Double check where one can.

  1. Not able to decide when it is the right time to leave the question?

Identify early when to give up and move on to the next question. This might hurt ONE’s sentiment and ego a bit, but it is definitely not worse than leaving questions un-attempted towards the end. Do not let his emotions play havoc with his question paper. Do not get emotionally invested in a question: there is always another one waiting for him..

  1. Not able to identify strength and weak areas

During the mock tests, identify one’s key strength topics that contribute the maximum towards one’s score and build a habit of solving those topics first. Do not waste time in the initial half of the hour in testing one’s ability on any untouched topics or weak areas that have not given any marks in the past. The first 40 minutes of the allotted time should be spent on hunting and striking down easy-medium questions to boost one’s score and confidence early in the test.

  1. Keep the performances of sections independent of each other

If Quant is not the first section that appears on the screen (as has been the case for the past few years) please remain calm and composed and one should not be worried. Start the section with a fresh mind without feeling too nervous about the previous performance.

Topper Tips to Attempt CAT QA Section

  • Soumyajeet Ghosh (2018, topper) says – “QA section demands a lot of practice and to save time for practicing more, one should adopt all small and simple tactics to increase his practice and reduce his errors.”
  • Ankit Desai got 99.91 percentile in CAT 2019, he shared his experience to handle Quant section, Ankit says- I was weak in Geometry and Numbers. So, first I revised all the formulas and wrote them down. After that, I solved around 50 questions more on these topics to understand the concepts better.

The general advice of most candidates securing 99+ percentile is to attempt as many mocks as possible. After attempting mocks, analyse what questions went wrong for you. Identify your weak sections and devote your time to practice the questions.

Ques. Can I get a seat in PEC Chandigarh (MTech CSE) with a GATE score of 400 Gen in the CAT?

● Top Answer By Arunima Sethi on 05 May 21

Ans. No, it is not possible to get a seat in PEC Chandigarh for M.Tech CSE at the GATE score of 400, being in General Category.  For Round 1, GATE 2020 opening score for CSE was 402 and the closing score was 523.  While, during Round 2, the score was between 379-395 for the General category.  The total seats for CSE at PEC Chandigarh is also limited. There are only 30 seats available for the program, out of which only 19 are for General candidates. Seeing my friend’s experience there, I would strongly recommend you to re-attempt the exam and score well. Try to get an opportunity in top engineering institutes like IITs/NITs.  It is not that PEC is a worse institute, but if you prepare well and give GATE again, you might land into your dream college. Also, a Master's is usually the last stage of academic learning for all. So, it is better to invest your Master's degree time in an excellent institute.Read more

Ques. How should I start studying now for my CAT 2020 to get into IIM Ahmedabad?

● Top Answer By Veda Burman on 07 Apr 21

Ans. Before you dive into anything further, the first thing you ought to be doing is to make a scheduled timetable to divide the subject time you will invest your energy in. Useful Tips: After you have scheduled your timetable, try separating your time in accordance with the subjects you will be working on each day.  Once done, the most important thing you are required to do is to work on the weaker parts of each subject and plan further into it. Preparing for the various parts of subjects can go in vain if you fail to give the mock tests.  Start taking the mock tests on a regular basis and practice the different aspects of it along with studying.  Then, after you are done with the mock tests, choose the subjects you have scored the lowest on and practice until you are capable of achieving what you have wished for. Online Classes: Besides, joining an online coaching class is encouraged, since it can be helpful. A few of the popular ones are as follows.  Iquanta Percentilers 2IIM Mindworks Usually, Mindworks is the most popular among students. Although, my brother recommends Percentilers above any one of them since it has provided amazing classes to him. As far as he says, Percentilers are running the LRDI challenge series at present. In that case, you can go and try for it as well. The best thing you can find in Percentilers is that they have scheduled the classes in basic, smaller batches which allows them to have very interactive classes. Not just that, their study materials are up to the mark and updated likewise.Read more
