CAT 2019 Scorecard can be downloaded from CAT official website, on the declaration of CAT Result. Non-IIMs accepting CAT score also require students to submit their official CAT Score Card during their admission process. Candidates are advised to check all the information mentioned on CAT 2019 scorecard carefully. For a sample, here is a CAT 2018 Scorecard:

CAT Score Card, CAT 2019 Score Card

The details given in CAT Score card are as follows:

    • Personal Details – This section of CAT 2019 Result includes Name, Gender, Date of Birth, as filled during CAT Registration
    • Candidate’s Contact Details – Candidate’s postal address and email id.
    • Category Details – Category details include information if the candidate is from General, EWS, NC-OBC, or SC/ST category. The CAT Exam scorecard also shows a candidate’s PWD/DA status.
    • Test Details –  Test details like CAT 2019 Registration number/Login id, test date, and slot.
    • Scaled Score –  Scaling of CAT scores is a process carried out to ensure fairness to all the candidates. CAT exam is conducted in two slots, and the test paper is different for each shift, so does the level of difficulty. There might be a case where question paper in one shift may be tough in comparison to the other shift. In such cases, the scores may vary. Thus to ensure fairness in comparing scores of candidates across different test sessions, the scores of all appearing candidates are scaled. Your CAT 2019 scorecard will contain a section-wise scaled score and overall scaled CAT score.
    • Percentile Score – A percentile score is the rank of a candidate relative to the rank of other candidates appearing in CAT 2019. For example, if in an exam where 100 candidates appeared, and your rank is 25, then 75 people scored less than you. So your percentile score would be (75/100) X 100 = 75%ile

    How is CAT Result Calculated?

With CAT being conducted at such a large scale, IIM releases CAT Percentile Score Calculation method to maintain transparency in the result process. CAT raw scores are first converted into scaled scores and finally into CAT Percentile. As per CAT Exam Pattern each question holds 3 marks. For each wrong answer, 1 mark is deducted as penalty. There is no negative marking for Non-MCQ questions.

CAT 2019 Percentile – CAT Result is declared in the form of a percentile score. The higher the percentile score, the greater are the chances to get shortlisted for the admission procedure. These percentile scores are determined by the normalization of scores.

CAT Score Validity – CAT Score is valid for one year only, candidates can apply for the management academic sessions of various colleges, right after their CAT results.

CAT 2019 Score vs Percentile – CAT percentile vs score signifies percentile corresponding to the score. There is no defined criteria for knowing what scaled score results in a certain percentile. For the convenience of candidates, here’s an expected CAT Score Vs Percentile record based on the past year records:

    CAT PercentileCAT Score

    99.02 to 99.95

    155.85 to 200.49

    98.03 to 98.98

    142.83 to 155.24

    97.05 to 97.84

    134.6 to 141.07

    96.02 to 96.99

    128.23 to 134.27

    95.08 to 95.97

    123.36 to 127.97

    CAT Score Normalisation

CAT 2019 will be conducted in two different shifts and each shift will have a different set of question papers. The difficulty level for each question set varies. Hence, to ensure fairness and equity in the marking process, CAT exam authority follows a normalization process where marks of each candidate are scaled.

"The Normalization process adjusts for location and scale differences of score distributions across different forms. After normalization across different forms, the scores will be further normalized across different sections."

Example- To explain further, let’s suppose 1000 students appeared in both the shifts in two cities A and B. The question paper in the second shift was tougher on the second shift. Also, the students from City B are from Hindi medium background but the question paper was in English. Now, the average score of students in the first shift is 110 and the average score of students in the second shift is 100. Also, the average score of students in city A is 120 and city B is 100.

Now, comparing the scores of all the students on the same parameter would not be fair. So the scores of the students in the second set and city would be multiplied by a number which is arrived at by careful consideration of multiple factors such as:

    1. Highest score
    2. Lowest score
    3. Top 10 percentile scores
    4. Lowest 10 percentile scores
    5. Mean
    6. Median
    7. Other deviations (city, educational background, etc.)
    • When the result is prepared, the original score of every candidate goes through the normalization process.
    • Though CAT authorities have not disclosed their method of normalization, the official brochure states that at first the process is adjusted for location and then scale the differences of score distribution across different forms.
    • After this process, the scores obtained are again scaled for different sections. The score thus obtained is then converted to percentiles.

    CAT Previous Year Toppers

Here is a list of candidates who topped the chart of CAT Previous year results and a brief on their CAT experience:

“I would like to say that every student should know his/her own strengths and weaknesses and prepare to keep that in mind, rather than trying to follow someone else's strategies,” says CAT Topper 2018, Amit Bikram (100 percentile)

He opted for the self-study method and started in May 2018. He primarily spent the first two months focusing on making his fundamentals stronger and revising by himself. The month before the CAT exam, he took one mock a day and attempted more than 30 mocks overall. He mentions the fact that he was weak in both LRDI and VARC and thus used different tactics such as intense practice and using a variety of different mocks to get better.

“There is no shortcut to the road of success in CAT,” says CAT topper, Niranjan Prasad (100 Percentile)

Niranjan mentions starting his preparation from December 2017. He did not take the coaching route either and instead opted to self-study. He focused mainly on two aspects of exam preparation. The first included knowing enough about the topics that he covered, thus the subject knowledge and the second was understanding the time distribution in the paper, thus time management.

“At the end of the day, CAT tests speed and aptitude more than knowledge which can only be developed by practicing a lot.” says CAT topper Swapnil Suman (100 Percentile)

Swapnil mentioned that the secret of his success is attempting various mock tests. He stated that he attempted more than 50 mock tests for his CAT 2018 preparation. He expressed that VARC was always his weakest section. So, to improve his verbal and reading skills, he used to read novels and non-fiction books.

Thus, all candidates have to provide their own personal email accounts through which they can be reached directly. This will also include result updates. Therefore, it is not advisable for an individual to create an email ID that does not belong to them.

Ques. I do not have any work experience. Will it affect my performance in CAT?

Can you explain me the CAT score normalisation process?

    07 Nov, 2017 18:00
    Sakshi Garg Expert

Hi Vivek, The normalization process in CAT Exam is as follows:

    • The process involves adjustment of location and score difference across different forms.
    • Once the adjustment is complete the scores are further normalized across different sections.
    • Under the term “equating” scores are normalized further across all the sections, thus the final percentile is created on the basis of final normalized score.
