UGC NET Exam Pattern (Updated), Marking Scheme and Syllabus

UGC NET Exam Pattern: The computer-based exam consists of 2 papers- Paper 1 and Paper 2. Both the papers will consist of only objective type questions. There will be a break of 30 minutes between them.

From December 2018 onwards, NTA or National Testing Agency will regulate UGC NET. CBSE will no longer hold the National Eligibility Test. The examination will be conducted twice a year in December and July 2019. As per the official notification, UGC NET December Session is scheduled from December 18 to 22 in online (computer-based) mode.

Other Facts Related to Paper Pattern:

National Eligibility Test 2019 or NET 2019 is a national level exam conducted by NTA on behalf of University Grants Commission (UGC). This national level test is a qualifying exam for lectureship in universities. It is also mandatory for some research programs. Listed below are key facts related to the exam pattern:

  • No. of Papers: two papers.
  • No. of Questions: Total 150 questions will be asked in NET (Paper 1: 50 Question and Paper 2: 100 Questions). All questions are compulsory to attempt.
  • Subjects: Paper I will consist General Aptitude Questions and Paper 2 will have questions related to the subject selected by candidates.
  • Medium of Paper: Hindi and English are the only options to attempt UGC NET. Choice for paper medium can be exercised at the time of filling the form.
  • Negative Marking: NTA will not be not following negative marking scheme in UGC NET.

UGC NET Exam Pattern Details

On behalf of UGC, the National Eligibility Test (NET) is conducted for determining the eligibility of Indian nationals ‘only for Assistant Professor’ or ‘for Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor both’ in Indian Universities and Colleges.

Till recently, CBSE conducted the UGC NET in 84 subjects at 91 selected cities spread across the country. From Dec 2018 onwards, the examination will be conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). CheckChanges Instroduced in UGC NET 2018

Mode of Exam

  • Online i.e. Computer Based Mode.
  • Each candidate will be allocated their own desktop with a preinstalled software especially formed for the examination.
  • Make sure to check that the system and the mouse is working properly before staring the exam. 

Nature of Questions

  • The questions in both the paper will be objective in nature.
  • This means, all the questions in UGC NET (December 2018) will be of Multiple Choice type (MCQs), having 4 choices.
  • Candidates must select the most appropriate answer.
  • The duration of Paper 1 is 60 minutes (1 hour) and Paper 2 is 120 minutes (2 hours)

Total Questions | Sections

  • Paper 1 will have 50 questions and Paper 2 will have 100 questions in total.
  • No restriction to move to and fro among the sections.
  • All the questions are compulsory to attempt

UGC NET Marking Scheme

  • A uniform marking system is followed in the exam i.e. for Paper 1 and 2, each correct answer carries + 2 marks.
  • As per the revised exam pattern of UGC NET Exam, there is no negative marking for any unanswered or incorrect answer.
  • Hence, instead of skipping a question, one can use their calculated guess and mark the answer.

The updated marking scheme of UGC NET is given below:

UGC NET 2019 Syllabus

Syllabus for UGC NET varies are per the subject opted at the time of registration. Till recently, the CBSE conducted UGC NET in 84 subjects at 91 selected cities spread across India. Now, NTA will hold the National Eligibility Test and with such a big change in the examination, candidates are notified that there is NO CHANGE in the Syllabus. A brief about both the papers are:

In UGC NET Paper I:

  • The questions will be generic in nature, intending to assess the teaching/research aptitude of the candidate.
  • It will primarily be designed to test reasoning ability, comprehension, divergent thinking and general awareness of the candidate.

In UGC NET Paper II:

  • This will be based on the subject selected by the candidate.
  • All the questions of Paper II will be compulsory.
  • It is suggested to thoroughly revise all the topics of Bachelors and Masters syllabus.
