UGC NET Exam Pattern (Updated), Marking Scheme and Syllabus

UGC NET 2019 is a computer-based exam (online) organized by NTA from June 20, 2019 to June 28, 2019 across the nation. The exam will be held to become eligible for the post of ‘Assistant Professor’ or ‘Junior Research Fellowship (JRF)’. 

NET comprises two papers – Paper 1 and Paper 2. The questions will be of objective type with no negative marking. Duration of Paper 1 and Paper 2 will be 1 hour and 2 hours respectively. The exam will be conducted in two shifts (morning and afternoon) for 7 days.

Slight changes have been made in the timings of the exam, the break between Paper 1 and Paper 2 will not be provided. The exam will be held in one session of 3 hours.

Note: NTA has released subject-wise mock tests for all the sessions at ntanet.ac.in.

UGC NET 2019 Exam Pattern Highlights

National Eligibility Test or NET 2019 is a national level exam conducted by NTA on behalf of University Grants Commission (UGC). This national level test is a qualifying exam for lectureship in universities. It is also mandatory for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF). Listed below are key facts related to the exam pattern:

  • No. of Papers: 2
  • No. of Questions: Total 150 questions will be asked in the exam (Paper 1: 50 Questions and Paper 2: 100 Questions). All questions are compulsory to attempt.
  • Subjects: Paper 1 will consist General Aptitude Questions and Paper 2 will have questions related to the subject selected by candidates.
  • Medium of Paper: Hindi and English are the only options to attempt UGC NET. Choice for paper medium can be exercised at the time of filling the form.
  • Negative Marking: NTA will not be not following negative marking scheme in UGC NET.

UGC NET 2019 Exam Pattern Details

On behalf of UGC, the National Eligibility Test (NET) is conducted to determine the eligibility of Indian nationals for ‘only for Assistant Professor’ or ‘for Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor both’ in Indian Universities and Colleges. Till recently, CBSE conducted UGC NET in 81 subjects at 263 selected cities spread across the country. From December 2018 onwards, UGC NET will be conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).  

Mode of Exam

  • Online i.e. Computer Based Mode.
  • Each candidate will be allocated their own desktop with a preinstalled software especially created for the examination.
  • Make sure to check that the system and the mouse is working properly before the exam commences. 

Nature of Questions

  • The questions in both the papers will be objective in nature.
  • This means, all the questions in UGC NET (December 2018) will be of Multiple Choice type (MCQs), having 4 choices.
  • Candidates must select the most appropriate answer.
  • The duration of Paper 1 is 60 minutes (1 hour) and Paper 2 is 120 minutes (2 hours)

Total Questions | Sections

  • Paper 1 will have 50 questions and Paper 2 will have 100 questions in total.
  • No restriction to move to and fro among the sections.
  • All the questions are compulsory to attempt

UGC NET Marking Scheme

  • A uniform marking system is followed in the exam i.e. for Paper 1 and 2, each correct answer carries + 2 marks.
  • As per the revised exam pattern of UGC NET Exam, there is no negative marking for any unanswered or incorrect answer.
  • Hence, instead of skipping a question, one can use their calculated guess and mark the answer.

UGC NET Marking Scheme

The updated marking scheme of UGC NET is given below:

Note: If a question for any reason is found to be incorrect, the benefit of marks will be given to only those candidates who attempted the question.

UGC NET 2019 Syllabus (Updated)

Syllabus for UGC NET 2019 varies are per the subject opted at the time of registration. A brief about both the papers are:

In UGC NET Paper I:

  • The questions will be generic in nature, intending to assess the teaching/research aptitude of the candidate.
  • It will primarily be designed to test reasoning ability, comprehension, divergent thinking and general awareness of the candidate.

In UGC NET Paper II:

  • This will be based on the subject selected by the candidate.
  • All the questions of Paper II will be compulsory.
  • It is suggested to thoroughly revise all the topics of Bachelors and Masters syllabus.
