CSIR UGC NET 2018 Exam Pattern

CSIR UGC NET Exam Pattern is laid out by Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). CSIR NET exam is conducted for science streams: Chemical Sciences, Earth Sciences, Life Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, and Physical Sciences. Knowing about the pattern will help a candidate to prepare for CSIR UCG NET in a better way. The following article will enlighten a candidate with the marking scheme, paper pattern, number of questions, total marks, etc that will be followed in the exam.

  • CSIR NET is conducted in offline mode
  • Each paper comprises 3 Parts – Part A, Part B and Part C
  • Questions are of objective type (MCQs), carrying a maximum of 200 marks
  • Duration of exam is 3 hours (180 minutes)
  • Negative marking is applicable against every wrong answer

CSIR UGC NET 2018 Exam Dates

The exam is conducted in 2 sessions – Forenoon Session (9 am to 12 pm) and Afternoon Session (2 pm to 5 pm). The important dates for both the phases of CSIR UGC NET 2018 together with the details of the events are summed up below:

CSIR – Chemical Sciences Exam Pattern Highlights

The paper is held in 2 sessions i.e. in forenoon and afternoon. There will be 3 Parts in the exam. The exam pattern for UGC NET Chemical Science is as follows:

  • Number of Questions: – In UGC NET, the number of questions varies every year. In Part A, it will carry 20 Questions from General Science, Quantitative Reasoning & Analysis, and Research Aptitude. One must answer any 15 questions. In Part B, it will contain 40 Questions covering topics given in CSIR UGC NET Chemical Science Syllabus. A candidate will be required to answer any 35 questions. For Part C,  it will contain 60 questions, designed to test a candidate's knowledge of scientific concepts and/or application of the scientific concepts. One must answer any 25 questions. Each question will be of four marks.
  • Marking Scheme: – Part A and Part B questions will be of two marks each. And Part C questions will be of 4 marks each. There will be negative marking i.e. 25% will be deducted for every wrong answer.

Earth science is a branch of science dealing with physical attributes of the earth and atmosphere. It covers following constitutions:

  • Earth

  • Ocean  
  • Planetary Sciences

CSIR – Earth Sciences Exam Pattern Highlights

The paper is held in 2 sessions i.e. in forenoon and afternoon. There will be 3 Parts in the exam. The exam pattern for UGC NET Earth Science is as follows:

  • Number of Questions: – In UGC NET, the number of questions varies every year. In Part A, it will carry 20 Questions from General Science, Quantitative Reasoning & Analysis, and Research Aptitude. One must answer any 15 questions. In Part B, it will contain 50 questions covering topics given in CSIR UGC NET Earth Science Syllabus. A candidate will be required to answer any 35 questions. For Part C,  it will contain 80 questions, designed to test a candidate's knowledge of scientific concepts and/or application of the scientific concepts. One must answer any 25 questions. Each question will be of four marks.
  • Marking Scheme: – Part A and Part B questions will be of two marks each. And Part C questions will be of 4 marks each. There will be negative marking i.e. 25% will be deducted for every wrong answer (Part A and Part B). For Part C, 33% of marks will be deducted for each wrong answer.

Highlights of Life Sciences Exam Pattern

The paper is held in 2 sessions i.e. in forenoon and afternoon. There will be 3 Parts in the exam. The exam pattern for UGC NET Life Science is as follows:

  • Number of Questions: – In UGC NET, the number of questions varies every year. In Part A, it will carry 20 Questions from General Science, Quantitative Reasoning & Analysis, and Research Aptitude. One must answer any 15 questions. In Part B, it will contain 50 questions covering topics given in CSIR UGC Life Science Syllabus. A candidate will be required to answer any 35 questions. For Part C, it will contain 75 questions, designed to test a candidate's knowledge of scientific concepts and/or application of the scientific concepts. One must answer any 25 questions. Each question shall be of four marks.
  • Marking Scheme: – Part A and Part B questions will be of two marks each. And Part C questions will be of 4 marks each. There will be negative marking i.e. 25% will be deducted for every wrong answer.

CSIR UGC NET 2018 Exam Pattern – Mathematical Sciences

Mathematical Science is the study including disciplines that are primarily mathematical nature. The syllabus for Part B and Part C is similar under this stream.

The paper is held in 2 sessions i.e. in forenoon and afternoon. There will be 3 Parts in the exam. The exam pattern for UGC NET Mathematical Science is as follows:

  • Number of Questions: – In UGC NET, the number of questions varies every year. In Part A, it shall carry 20 Questions from General Science, Quantitative Reasoning & Analysis, and Research Aptitude. One must answer any 15 questions. In Part B, it will contain 40 questions covering topics given in CSIR UGC NET Mathematical Science Syllabus. A candidate shall be required to answer any 25 questions. For Part C,  it will contain 60 questions, designed to test a candidate's knowledge of scientific concepts and/or application of the scientific concepts. One must answer any 20 questions. Each question shall be of four marks.
  • Marking Scheme: – Part A questions will be of two marks each. Part B will have questions of 3.75 marks each. Whereas, questions in Part C will have a weightage of 4.75 marks each. For Part A and Part B there will be negative marking of 25% for every wrong answer. There will be no negative marking for Part C.

CSIR UGC NET 2018 Exam Pattern – Physical Sciences

Physical sciences is the study of inanimate natural objects, including physics, chemistry, astronomy, and related subjects.

The paper is held in 2 sessions i.e. in forenoon and afternoon. There will be 3 Parts in the exam. The exam pattern for UGC NET Physics Science is as follows:

  • Number of Questions: – In UGC NET, the number of questions varies every year. In Part A, it shall carry 20 Questions from General Science, Quantitative Reasoning & Analysis, and Research Aptitude. One must answer any 15 questions. In Part B, it will contain 25 questions covering topics given in the syllabus. A candidate will be required to answer any 20 questions. For Part C, it will contain 30 questions, designed to test a candidate's knowledge of scientific concepts and/or application of the scientific concepts. One must answer any 20 questions. 
  • Marking Scheme: – Part A questions will be of two marks each. Part B will have questions of 3.50 marks each. Whereas, questions in Part C will have a weightage of 5 marks each. For all the parts, there will be negative marking of 25% for every wrong answer. 

CSIR UGC NET 2018 Marking Scheme

  • The marks allocation for each of the portion is different.
  • The negative marking awarded for every incorrect answer is 25% of the total marks the respective question consists.
  • The negative marking is also applicable as per the subject-wise scheme of the examination.
  • If in case a question is detected wrong by the conducting authority, then the benefit of the marks will be awarded only to those candidates who will attempt the respective questions.
  • Thus, there is no marking for un-attempted questions. The marks allocations for each part out of total 200 marks are the following:

CSIR UGC NET 2018 Important Instructions

The important instructions related to CSIR UGC NET 2018 are as follows:

  1. List of candidates registered for this test will be made available on the official website. Aspirants must refer to the website for checking their registration and for time to time updates.
  2. The Question Booklet for this test will be printed in Hindi and English Version.  Candidate opting for Hindi medium in the Application Form, will be supplied bilingual Question Booklet and Candidate opting for English medium will be supplied Question Booklet printed in English Version only.  The candidate will be required to answer as per option exercised in the application Form.
  3. The actual number of questions in each Part and Section to be asked and attempted may vary from subject to subject.
  4. No candidates shall be permitted to leave the Exam Hall before completion of 3 Hours from the start of the exam.
  5. The candidates will be permitted to take their Question Booklet and also the carbonless duplicate copy of OMR sheet with them after the completion of the examination for their reference/record.
  6. The OMR Answer Sheets shall be distributed to the candidates 15 minutes before the scheduled start of the exam while the Question Booklet shall be distributed 5 minutes before the scheduled start of the exam to enable the candidates to go through the instructions and correctly fill up the required particulars.
  7. No relevant column of the application form should be left blank. Incomplete or defective applications will be summarily rejected.

I want to know any is it required to qualify each section A , B, C.Like banks exam has section each must be clear to qualify exam while in ssc section cut off is not required like that what about CSIR is it required to qualify each section.
