    GATE Exam Centers 2020: IIT Delhi has scheduled GATE 2020 for February 1, 2, 8 and 9 in online mode. The exam centers are spread in different cities across India and at 6 cities abroad. 195+ exam centers are enlisted under 8 zonal IITs in India.

    Candidates had to choose 3 exam centers while fillingGATE 2020 Application Form. Candidates of any nationality can opt for GATE 2020 international centers. The exam will be conducted in CBT mode for all the 25 disciplines. Check detailed GATE Exam Pattern

    The selection of the exam center has to be done according to the preference. For the centers in India, the application fee is INR 1500. For exam centers in Dubai and Singapore, the application fee is US$ 100. For remaining, it is US$ 50. Read on to know more about GATE Exam Centers.

    For administrative purposes, test cities in India are divided into 8 zones. IISc Bangalore and 7 IITs are the 8 zonal GATE offices that administer the operations related to GATE in these exam cities. If you select a particular city as your first choice then the corresponding zone to which the center city belongs will appear. GATE 2020 will be conducted in both India and abroad. In India, there are more than 195 exam centers across India. The following table elucidates exam cities as per their zonal GATE offices-

    International GATE Exam Centers

    GATE 2020 will be conducted in the following countries- Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, UAE, Nepal, and Singapore. The application fee also varies for candidates opting international GATE exam centers. 

    • Only a valid Passport/Government issued ID/College ID/Employee ID will be accepted as the recognized identification.
    • For foreign nationals, reservation categories (SC/ST/PWD/Women) are not applicable for concession in application fees.
    • The session timings of GATE International Test Centers as per their local time will be notified in advance.
    • GATE Registration for international applicants will remain same as that of Indian candidates.
    • Candidates will be contacted only through their emails. For important information, they will be contacted through their mobile numbers.

    Change/Choose Exam Center

    How to Choose GATE Exam Centers?

    GATE Exam Centers have to be chosen at the time of filling GATE Application Form. A candidate has to choose 3 exam centers. The important points related to GATE Exam Centers and procedure of selecting center are mentioned below-

    • First and second exam center must of same GATE Zone. 
    • Third choice of GATE Exam Center can be from any zone.
    • After filling in all the details, candidates have the option to select the GATE exam center.
    • They will have to select the exam center from the given list of cities.
    • Candidates can select any one of the centers, keeping in mind their nearest cities as per their convenience.
    • Allotment of the examination centers will be done on the first-apply-first-allotment basis.
    • After selecting the exam centers, complete all the required details and make payment.
    • Candidates who register successfully will be allotted admit card in January 2020. The final allotted exam center will be mentioned in it.

    Note that due to operational constraints, the GATE committee reserves the right to add a new city or remove an existing one. It can allot a city that may not be included in the choices of the candidates. Whichever center is allotted to the candidate, it will be mentioned in the GATE Admit card along with the center details. 

    How to Change GATE Exam Center?

    Candidates can change their exam city in GATE application form by sending a request before November 17, 2019 (tentative). The request has to be sent through official website of GOAPS. An additional fee will be required to pay to change the exam city.

    • Candidates must clearly state the reason why they want to change the exam center.
    • Fee payment will be done online only.
    • Candidates have to pay a fee of INR 400 against the changes in the application form.

    Instructions for Exam Center

    Instructions to be Followed at GATE Exam Center

    Given below is a set of instructions that must be followed at GATE Exam Center-

    • You will be permitted to enter the exam center only with a valid GATE 2020 Admit Card and a Photo ID.
    • Reach the exam center at least 60 minutes prior to the scheduled exam.
    • Scribble pads will be provided for rough work and it must be returned back after the exam.
    • A virtual scientific calculator will be provided on-screen for the calculation work. 
    • You are not permitted to leave the exam hall during the exam.
    • Entry to the exam hall will be prohibited after 9:30 AM (for morning session) and 14:30 PM (for afternoon session).
    • You will be permitted only if your credentials are verified by the center officials.

    More About Virtual Calculator

    In the exam center, students are not permitted to enter with the electronic media including scientific calculator and the log tables.

    • Earlier, aspirants were allowed to carry scientific calculator for calculations. But now it is abandoned in the exam hall.
    • For calculation work, GATE Portal provides an online scientific calculator. You can use it on screen for calculations.
    • This on-screen calculator will be the same as physical scientific calculator.

    Dos’ at GATE Exam Centers

    • The examination hall shall be opened 35 minutes before the beginning of the examination. 
    • If the candidate fails to reach the examination hall in the prescribed time they will miss a few important instructions to be announced at the center.
    • The candidate must show the admit card when asked for entering the examination hall.
    • A seat with a specific roll number shall be allotted to each candidate. The candidate must carefully find and occupy the allotted seat only.
    • In case they are found in a different examination room or on a different seat then their candidature will be cancelled.
    • Biometric information for candidates may be captured before the commencement of test.
    • The admit cards of the candidate shall be checked by the invigilator during the examination to confirm the identity of the candidate.
    • All the candidates are requested to carry their admit cards along with the ID card and two ballpoint pens for the examination.

    Don’ts at GATE Exam Center

    • Any other material other than Pens, Pencils, Admit Card and ID Proof won’t be allowed inside the exam center.
    • Candidate not bearing a valid admit card and identity proof shall not be allowed inside by the Centre Superintendent.
    • Any textual material (written or printed), any bits of paper or any unwanted material shall not be permitted inside the examination hall.
    • Any electronic gadget like calculators, digital watches, cell phones or geometry box, log tables, slide rules etc. are banned inside the examination hall.
    • They are advised not to carry any of these banned devices including the cellphone as the exam center authorities do not guarantee the safety of such devices.
    • They won’t be permitted to leave his/her allocated seat before the indication of the conclusion of the examination.
    • GATE Exam will begin exactly on the time mentioned in the admit card. The exam will automatically stop after the time finishes and all the responses will be saved.
    • In case any registered candidate doesn’t appear for the examination due to any reason, there shall be no re-examination for such candidates under any circumstances.

    Ques: How many exam cities are there in GATE 2020?

    Ans: In GATE 2020, there are a total of 199 exam centres, last year the total exam centres were 206. A total of 6 exam centres are located outside India and they are Dubai, Addis Ababa, Colombo, Dhaka, Kathmandu, Singapore. You can choose only 3 centers and it should be done as per your preference of exam centers.

    Ans: GATE exam centre allotment is purely based on the choices that you fill. If you want to avail an exam center in UP, you just need to fill your choices accordingly.

    Ques: Does my birthplace mentioned in GATE application form will affect the exam center allotment in the exam?

    Ans: No, the exam centres are allocated to the candidates only on the basis of the choices filled by the candidates in GATE application form. Candidates must fill the exam centre choices in the order of preference.

    Ans: The documents needed to be carried to the exam centre are mentioned below:
