IAS Reservation Criteria, UPSC Reservation Rules for SC/ST/OBC/PWD

UPSChas granted reservation of seats for candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC and PH category. Reservation in IAS Exam is offered in terms of age relaxation, the number of attempts, IAS Eligibility, relaxation in IAS Cut off and the total number of seats. The reservation offered is different for each category and the revised criteria are published on every year.

  • Relaxation in cut off marks is also provided to students from SC, ST, OBC and PwD category.
  • UPSC also provides reservation in vacancies to students from SC, ST and OBC category which ranges from 16% to 25% of the total vacancies.

Age Relaxation in IAS Exam

The date of birth, as mentioned in the Matriculation or Secondary School Leaving Certificate or in an equivalent Matriculation certificate recognized by any Indian University is considered valid. Candidates are required to submit these certificates at the time of applying for the UPSC Mains. The upper age limit is relaxable according to the category the candidate belongs to. The age limit relaxation which can be claimed by reserved categories for IAS is given below:

  • Up to 5 years if a candidate belongs to SC/ST
  • Up to 3 years if a candidate belongs to OBC category
  • Up to five years if a candidate had been domiciled in Jammu and Kashmir from January 1st, 1980 to December 31st, 1989.
  • Up to 3 years in case of Defence Services Personnel
  • Up to 5 years in the case of Ex-Servicemen along with ECOs/SSCOs and Commissioned Officers, who have served at least 5 years of Military Services.
  • Up to 10 years in the case of orthopedically handicapped candidates blind, deaf, and mute.

Distribution of Vacancies in IAS

UPSC releases distribution of vacancies in each department among various recognised categories. As it is clear from the table given below that reservation of Scheduled caste ranges from 24% to 30% in each department. Reservation of Seats for Scheduled Tribe ranges from 8% to 12% in each department. The vacancies listed as per the category is allotted to students belonging to that particular category.

How to Claim IAS Reservation?

The candidates are required to follow the following regulations and submit the requisite documents to claim the IAS Reservation. The guidelines considered to claim IAS Reservation are mentioned below:

  • A candidate will get the benefit of community reservation only in case if the candidate’s caste is included in the list of reserved communities issued by the Central Government.
  • If a candidate belongs to General Category but subsequently request Commission to change his/her category to the reserved one, such request shall not be entertained under any circumstances.
  • The same rule will be practised for the physically disabled category as well.
  • Unfortunately, if a candidate becoming physically disabled during the course of the IAS, the candidate is required to produce valid documents to address the Commission to take a relevant decision in the matter.
  • All the candidates who are seeking IAS Reservation available for SC/ST/PH/OBC/Ex-servicemen must ensure that they are eligible for the same as per the rules and should possess all the requisite certificate prescribed by the Commission and should submit it before the due date of the IAS Application Form.
  • No request for withdrawal of candidature after the submission of IAS Online Application will be entertained under any circumstances.

The IAS Exam Eligibility for the physically disabled persons availing reservation against the vacancies reserved for them as prescribed in "The Persons with Disability (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995."

IAS Exam Eligibility Criteria

UPSC has defined the IAS Exam Eligibility to be meet accurately by the aspiring candidates. The complete list of IAS Exam Eligibility conditions are described below. Candidates are recommended to have a look at the information provided below and satisfy them to appear for the IAS Exam.


It is mandatory for the candidate to be a citizen of India if he/she is applying for Indian Administrative Service and the Indian Police Service. Apart from I.A.S or I.P.S services, candidate must be any of the following:

  1. a citizen of India
  2. a subject of Nepal
  3. a subject of Bhutan
  4. a refugee from Tibet who came to India with intention of permanently settling before January 01, 1962 or
  5. a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India

Age Limit

A candidate must be at least 21 years old to be considered eligible for appearing in the IAS Exam or at most 32 years old to be considered eligible. Age relaxation will be given to the reserved categories.

Qualification for IAS Exam

The minimum qualification for IAS Exam is to hold a degree which has been incorporated by Act of Parliament or which is about to be declared as a Deemed University by University Grants Commission. The candidate must have cleared or candidates who are appearing in the qualifying examination can also apply for IAS Exam.

Number of Attempts in IAS Exam

  • Every candidate is provided six attempts to appear in the IAS Exam.
  • Candidates who belong to Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe are provided with relaxation on the No. of attempts for IAS Exam.
  • Candidates who belong to Other Backward Classes (OBC) category are eligible to take nine attempts of IAS Exam.
  • Candidates who belong to PH category may have as many attempts as non- physically handicapped candidates of the same community.
  • Physically handicapped candidates who belong to General category are eligible to have nine attempts IAS Exam.
  • If a candidate appears in any paper in the UPSC Prelims, it will be assumed that candidate has made an attempt at the IAS Exam.

Post Offered and Vacancies through IAS Exam

UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) has numerous posts and vacancies and here is the complete list of the same. The number of vacancies is expected to be around 980, which will be divided among the reserved categories i.e. 34 vacancies will be reserved for PH category, 14 vacancies will be reserved for LDCP, 13 vacancies for HI, 7 vacancies for B/LV. The candidates are required to check the list of posts offered to fill the desired post in the IAS Online Form.

Hello Sinu, The upper age limit for candidates of PWD category of general, OBC, SC/ST is 42 years, 45 years and 47 years. Minimum age limit is 21 years.
