    IELTS General Training: Exam Dates, Exam Patterns, IELTS Components, Mean Performance

    IELTS is designed for measuring English Language Proficiency. Every year, thousands of students from India travel abroad to secure better life styles. There are two formats for IELTS exam- IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. Those who want to pursue higher education in English speaking nations seek IELTS Academic exam. Those who want to travel abroad for secondary education or migration or employment opportunities take IELTS General Training Exam. 

    The candidates who want to move to Canada, New Zealand, Australia or UK need to take IELTS General Training exam. Test takers can take IELTS General Training exam via computer or paper based. This exam focuses mostly on survival strategies present within the social or workplace environment. 

    Exam Pattern

    IELTS General Training: Exam Pattern

    There are four components in IELTS exam pattern- Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. In both IELTS General Training and IELTS Academic, speaking and listening components are similar. IELTS General Test measures English language proficiency of the candidate in everyday context. Total time duration for IELTS General Training exam is 2hrs 45minutes.

    Test takers have to book a slot for IELTS exam. There are 48 dates in total for both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. List of IELTS dates given below

    General Training :Listening

    IELTS General Training: Listening

    • Section 1: 10 questions (General conversation between 2 English natives) 
    • Section 2: 10 questions (Monologue on general topic) 
    • Section 3: 10 questions (Conversation between 2-4 people around academics) 
    • Section 4: 10 questions (Monologue on academic topic) 
    • 40 questions to be answered in 30 minutes 

    Test takers have to listen to pre-recorded recordings to answer these sections. Questions can be MCQ type, fill in the blanks, flowcharts, or tables. In India, an individual is well acquainted with listening English content. It is a major reason to score the best in a listening band. 

    IELTS General Training: Listening Marking

    IELTS exam band score conversion table is presented at the end of exam. There are 40 questions in this section. Each question carries 1 mark. Therefore, score out of 40 will be converted into IELTS 9 band scale. Test taker will be marked out of 9. Grammatical and spelling mistakes will be penalized. 

    General Training: Speaking

    IELTS General training Speaking section measures spoken English skills of the test taker. Total time allotted for this section is 11-14minutes. Examiners measure the skills of candidates on four criteria- accuracy and usage of grammar, coherence and fluency, lexical resource and pronunciation. Each criteria has a weightage value of 25%

    • There are 3 parts in this section 
    • In Part 1, questions are asked on general introduction like family, home, studies, work 
    • 4-5 minutes are allotted for Part 1 
    • In Part 2, test takers have to talk about a topic given through a task card
    • 3-4 minutes (including preparation time) test takers have to spend for Part 2
    • In Part 3, examiner will discuss issues with test taker related to Part 2 
    • 4-5 minutes are allotted for Part 3 

    IELTS General Training: Speaking Marking

    IELTS General Training section is marked on four criteria mentioned before. Examiner will mark with the ability to comprehend speech given by the test taker. Each criteria carries 25% of the total mark. Test takers are marked on basis of usage of vocabulary, correct grammar, coherence and fluency, lexical resource and pronunciation. 

    General Training: Writing

    • 2 questions to be answered in 60 minutes 
    • In Task 1, test takers have to write a letter in response to a situation given in either informal or semi-formal or formal way
    • 20 minutes are there to complete Task 1 in 150 words 
    • In Task 2, test takers have to write an essay in either semi-formal or discursive manner in response to a problem or argument or a point of view 
    • 40 minutes are there to complete Task 2 in 250 words 

    IELTS General Training: Writing Marking

    In IELTS General Training section, both tasks carry different weightage. Examiners mark the test takers after assessing responses given to questions. This section is marked on basis of four criteria- task achievement, coherence and cohesion, lexical resources and correct usage of grammar. Marks are given either in half bands or whole bands.

    • 40 questions to be answered from 3 reading sections in 60 minutes 
    • Texts are taken from handbooks, advertisements, newspapers, magazines, and guidelines 
    • Section 1 contains either 2 or 3 short texts 
    • Section 2 consists of 2 texts 
    • Section 3 consists of 1 long complex text 
    • Mostly 11 kinds of task type will have to answer like- MCQ, Identifying information, Identifying writer’s opinions, Matching information, Matching heading, Matching features, Matching sentence endings, Sentence completion, Summary or flow chart completion, Diagram label completion, and short answer question

    IELTS General Training: Reading Marking 

    In IELTS General Training Reading section, test takers have to answer 40 questions in 60 minutes. Examiners measure analytical, logical and deductive skills of the test takers. After marking, Cambridge Assessment English further analyzes the scoring band. Scores are given out of 40 which is later converted to IELTS score band of 9.

    Mean Performance

    As per available data of IELTS test takers, it is noticed that percentage of marks in IELTS General Training secured by test takers is comparatively higher than marks secured in IELTS Academic test. Such a change in marks is because IELTS Academic is taken by those who want to pursue higher education in English speaking nations. Whereas IELTS General Training exam is for those who want to pursue secondary education or migration or employment opportunities. 

    General_Training_Mean_Perfomance

    In the above mentioned graph it is seen that average score band for IELTS Score band is higher than score band of IELTS Academic. Similarly like IELTS Academic, test takers score the highest in listening component and least in writing component. Score band for writing component in IELTS Academic is 5.6 for female and 5.5 for male test takers. Score band has been different for the writing component in IELTS General Training. Another reason is texts given for writing section in IELTS General Training are easier than written section given for the IELTS Academic test.

    IELTS General Training requires rigorous practice to secure good marks in overall band score. For this, test takers require to practice study materials available online other than books available. Practice IELTS exam sample papers to get an overall idea of the exam.
