IES is also known as ESE (Engineering Services Exam). Nearly 2 lakh candidates register for the engineering entrance exam each year.

IES 2019 Eligibility

UPSC has segregated various norms that a candidate needs to fulfill before applying for IES. The eligibility criteria for IES is defined by the following standards:

  • Nationality – Candidates must be a resident of India, Nepal, Bhutan or a Tibetan refugee.
  • Age Limit – Age limit for IES 2019 is between 21-30 years of age.
  • Academic Qualification – Candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree in the field of engineering from a recognized University.
  • Physical Standards – Candidates must be physically fit according to the standards defined by exam authorities for admission to Engineering Services Examination.

IES 2019 Application Form

  • IES Application Form filling process is completely online.
  • Candidates are required to visit the official website of UPSC to apply for IES 2019.
  • Candidates can start filling in IES Application Form from September 27, 2017.
  • The registration for IES 2019 is done in two parts - Registration Part I and Registration Part II.

IES Registration I

  • In the first part of registration, visit the official website of UPSC to enter personal details and submit them.
  • This will bring them to the next step of registration process i.e. Application Fee payment.

Payment of Application Fee

  • The application fee can be remitted via online as well as offline mode.
  • Candidate will be redirected to a new page where he/she will have to choose the mode of payment.
  • If candidate chooses to pay online, facilities like credit card/debit card or net banking will be available.
  • In case of offline mode of payment, a pay-in-slip shall be provided for cash payment at the nearest branch of State Bank of India.

Registration II

  • Fill in your exam center choices along with engineering core branch once you have successfully paid your application fee.
  • Candidates will have to communicate other details as well before moving to the next step.

Upload required documents

  • Submit all the required information and move on to upload your scanned copy of passport size photograph and clearly visible signatures in the given dimensions.
  • Checkmark the declaration to complete IES Registration.

Important Instructions to Withdraw Application

  • It is advisable to go through the instructions carefully before filling up the request for withdrawal of application.
  • The Commission has provided the withdrawal facility from October 29 to November 5 (till 6.00 pm) to those candidates who do not want to appear for IES.
  • Candidates must provide the details of registered application with registration-ID which was completed and submitted finally.
  • Before making the request for withdrawal, candidate must ensure that they have access to the registered mobile no. and email-ID, provided at the time of final submission. Separate OTPs will be sent by the Commission on the registered mobile no. and email-ID. Request for withdrawal will be accepted only after it is confirmed by validating the OTP details sent on contact information provided. Such OTPs will be valid for 30 Minutes only.
  • Request for generating OTP for withdrawal of application will be accepted only till 5.30 PM on November 5.
  • If a candidate has submitted more than one application form then the higher registration-ID of Application (latest) will be considered for withdrawal and all earlier applications will be treated as cancelled automatically.
  • After the final acceptance of the request for online withdrawal of application, the candidate must print the authenticated receipt. Once application has been withdrawn, it cannot be revived in future.
  • UPSC has no provision to refund any fee amount paid by candidates, so in case of successful withdrawal of application the fees will not be refunded.
  • On successful completion of withdrawal of application, an auto-generated email and SMS will be sent on candidate’s registered email-ID and mobile. In case any candidate has not submitted the request for withdrawal of application he/she may contact UPSC on email-id: upscsoap@nic.in immediately.
  • Candidates are advised not to share the OTPs received on email and SMS to anybody.
Note: There is no provision for withdrawing of incomplete applications.

While in the Part II registration of IES 2019, candidates are asked to choose IES Exam Center for preliminary exam, according to their preference. It must be noted that the exam center for Mains examination is different.

  • Go to the official website of UPSC
  • Click on the link to download IES admit card
  • Choose the method of downloading i.e. through Registration ID or Roll Number or Name.

IES 2019 Exam Pattern

  • IES 2019 Exam Pattern is defined by Union Public Service Commission. 
  • IES 2019 comprises of three stages- Prelims, Mains and finally Personal Interview.
  • Preliminary exam is an objective paper whereas Mains exam is a conventional paper.
  • Candidates will have to clear prelims to appear for Mains examination.
  • Those who qualify will proceed to the personality test also known as Interview round. 
  • Both the sections of the written test cover the entire syllabus of relevant engineering subject (Civil/ Mechanical/ Electrical/ Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering).

  • The medium of Mains exam paper will be English only.
  • 5% marks will be deducted from the total marks scored by candidate if the handwriting is not easily legible.

IES Personal Interview Round: 

  • Candidates shortlisted after IES Mains round will be called for personal interview session.
  • It is officially known as ‘Personality Test’ round.
  • Candidates are required to fill Detailed Application Form (DAF) online.

  • A maximum of 200 marks is allotted to the personality test (interview test).

Provision for PwD candidates 

  • UPSC has made provision of providing a compensatory time of 20 minutes per hour for candidates belonging to PwD category.
  • Also, candidates with (minimum of 40% impairment) will be allowed to write Engineering Services Examination (ESE) with the help of a scribe.

IES 2019 Result

IES 2019 Prelims Results were declared on February 17, 2019

  • Only those candidates who qualify the prelims shall be able to proceed to the IES 2019 Mains exam.
  • Similarly, a list will be prepared for candidates who will be called for Personal Interview. Furthermore, a final list of the selected candidates will be disclosed.
  • The Result for each tier will be declared separately.

  • Go to the official website of UPSC and  search for result link.
  • A pdf file will be uploaded declaring the results of candidates.
  • Download and open it. Enter your roll number to search for your result.

IES 2019 Cut Off

  • IES 2019 cut off for Preliminary exam was disclosed at the time of result declaration
  • Candidates can check the cut off of IES online by visiting the official website of UPSC.
  • To qualify for the next stage i.e. IES Mains, it is important to score equal or more marks as per the set qualifying marks.
  • The cut off is different for all the exams. The following factors determine the cutoff:

IES Final Stage

Stage 3 is conducted after Personality Test. The marks are calculated out of 1300 marks. Candidates are recruited on the basis of marks secured by them in IES Stage 3.

IES 2019 Selection Procedure

The two-staged IES recruitment process adopted by UPSC for IES 2019 exam is:

  • Written Examination
  • Personal Interview

The written exam comprises of two exams- Preliminary and Mains. Candidates are required to qualify for IES cut off set by the commission. Clearing IES 2019 Prelims is essential to proceed to IES 2019 Mains Exam. The mains exam is qualifying criteria for Personal Interview session. Shortlisted candidates will be called for final stage i.e. Personality Test. The final results and merit list form the basis of an appointment letter in the name of candidate.

Ans: Only the marks scored by the candidate in Paper 1 is considered for the final merit list. However, to qualify for IES 2019 Mains, it is essential for candidates to qualify the cut off of IES 2019 Prelims.

Ans: IES Prelims 2019 Results was released by UPSC On February 17, 2019, on the official website.

Ans: The minimum marks required to qualify for IES prelims is set to 15% i.e. 75 marks out of 500 for General and reserved categories candidates.

Q: What is the procedure after IES Prelims 2019 Results?

Ans: After the declaration of the result, UPSC will release the list of candidates who have qualified for Second stage i.e. IES 2019 Mains. UPSC does not release any merit list for this round.

Q: When will the second stage of IES 2019 be held?

Ans: IES Mains 2019 is scheduled to be conducted on July 01, 2019, through offline mode.

Ans: IES Mains 2019 will be conducted in offline mode. The second stage will also consist of two paper, both will contain conventional type question of 300 number each. Candidates will be given 180 minutes to solve each paper. The questions will be from the selected Engineering discipline.

Q: What is the marking scheme for IES Mains?

Ans: Different question will carry different marks. There is no negative marking for the wrong answer in IES Mains Paper. However, 5% marks will be deducted in case of illegible handwriting. Marks obtained in this stage are counted for determining the final order of merit.

Ans: The syllabus for Mains paper will consist of the topics from the selected engineering discipline of the candidate(Civil Engineering/Mechanical Engineering/Electrical/Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering).

Hi Boska, The basic eligibility to apply for IES is that candidate should have a Bachelor’s degree in engineering and his/her age should be in between 21 to 30 years.

Hello Sachin, I think it varies for different candidates as it is highly dependent on one's potential, Hard work. Some may complete in 3 months and some may take 2 years depending upon their interest,Ability,Concentration,Sincerity and etc.

Hello Sakshi, You can apply for it as Candidate should be engineering graduate only.Final year students can apply too. But only civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics

I had filled my part 1 of the form but i couldn't fill my part 2 since it required desktop/laptop and cannot be filled by mobile. And i was out of station so was unable to access destop/laptop. I request you to please reopen the link so that i can submit my form. Its really important for me to fill this form.

Hello Mansi,In such cases Candidates can visit cyber cafe's or can borrow someone's laptop. Once date to fill application form expired no candidate able to complete registration
