IIT JAM 2018 Exam Pattern

IIT JAM 2018 is scheduled to be conducted on February 11, 2018. Candidates planning to appear in IIT JAM 2018 which will be conducted by either IIT Bombay or IIT Guwahati, are required to check JAM 2018 Exam Pattern mentioned below.

  • IIT JAM 2018 will be a computer based online exam.
  • Duration of the exam will be 3 hours.
  • The medium of the paper will be English language only.
  • There will be total 60 questions asked in the examination which will be divided into three sections.
  • The exam will have a total of seven papers, which includes Biotechnology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biological Sciences, Geology, Mathematical Statistics and Physics.
  • Section A will be of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) type, Section B of Multiple Select Questions (MSQ) type and Section C of Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions.

IIT JAM (Joint Admission Test for M.Sc.) is a national level entrance test conducted by IISc and IITs on a rotational basis for admission into various postgraduate science programs. Candidates seeking admission to M.Sc, joint M.Sc-Ph.D, M.Sc Ph.D dual degree, M.Sc-M.Tech, M.Sc-M.S (Research), integrated Ph.D, Ph.D dual degree and other post bachelor degree programs offered at IITs and IISc Bangalore are required to clear IIT JAM.

Highlights of IIT JAM 2018 Exam Pattern

IIT JAM 2018 Test Papers

IIT JAM 2018 comprises seven test papers. Candidates can choose to appear in one of the seven test papers for IIT JAM as mentioned below:

  1. Biological Sciences
  2. Biotechnology
  3. Chemistry
  4. Geology
  5. Mathematics
  6. Mathematical Statistics
  7. Physics

IIT JAM 2018 Exam Pattern in Detail

IIT JAM 2018 will be conducted online in a computer based test mode for all the seven papers. The duration of examination will be of 3 hours. In JAM 2018, there are total 60 questions comprising 100 marks. The question paper will be based on three sections namely Section A, Section B and Section C. The detailed exam pattern of three sections are mentioned below:

Section A:

Section A will have total 30 MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions). Each question will carry one or two marks. Each question will contain four optional answers, candidates must choose the right answer only. Candidates can answer by clicking the given choices. For each right answer candidate will be given 1 or 2 marks and for each wrong answer, 1/3 or 2/3 mark will be deducted.

Section B:

Section C:

This section will consist of 20 NAT (Numerical Answer Type) questions. No options will be displayed for these types of questions. Candidates must answer by pressing the number through the virtual numeric keypad. No Negative marking again.

IIT JAM 2018 Marking Scheme

Each paper inIIT JAM 2018 will contain total 60 questions divided into three sections which will carry 100 marks.

  • Section A contains 10 Multiple choice questions of  1 mark each and 20 MCQs of 2 marks each.
  • Section B contains 10 Multiple select questions of 2 marks each.
  • Section C contains 10 Numerical Answer type questions of 1 mark each and 20 questions of 2 marks each.
  • There is no negative marking in the Section B & C but negative marking will be done for Section A.
  • In section A, for the 1 mark question, 1/3 of marks will be deducted for a wrong answer and for a 2 marks questions, 2/3 marks will be deducted for each incorrect response. No marks will be deducted for un-attempted questions.

IIT JAM 2018 Syllabus

In IIT JAM Syllabus, some new changes have been introduced. The syllabus will be completely based on 10+2+3 level. Students can check the latest syllabus of JAM 2018 for all the seven papers.

1. Biological Science (BL)

Basics of Biochemistry, Biophysics, Molecular Biology, General Biology, Microbiology, Cell Biology and Immunology, Mathematical Sciences.

2. Biotechnology (BT)

The weightage of the test paper will be as follows: Biology (44% weightage), Mathematics (18% weightage), Chemistry (20% weightage) and Physics (18% weightage).

  • Biology: General Biology, Biochemistry and Physiology, Basic Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology
  • Chemistry: Atomic Structure: Bohr’s theory and Schrodinger wave equation; Periodicity in properties; Chemical bonding; Properties of s, p, d and f block elements; Complex formation; Coordination compounds; Chemical equilibria; Chemical thermodynamics
  • Mathematics (10+2 Level): Sets, Relations and Functions, Mathematical Induction, Logarithms, Complex numbers, Linear and Quadratic equations, Sequences and Series, Trigonometry, Three-Dimensional Geometry, Vectors, Matrices and Determinants, Boolean Algebra, Probability, Functions
  • Physics (10+2 Level): Physical World and Measurement, Elementary Statics and Dynamics, Kinematics, Laws of Motion, Work, Energy and Power, Electrostatics, Current electricity, Magnetic Effects of Current and Magnetism, Electromagnetic Induction and Alternating Current, Electromagnetic waves, Optics.

3. Chemistry (CY)

Basic Mathematical Concepts, Atomic and Molecular Structure, Theory of Gases, Solid state, Chemical Thermodynamics, Chemical and Phase Equilibria, Electrochemistry, Basic Concepts in Organic Chemistry and Stereochemistry, Organic Reaction Mechanism and Synthetic Applications, Qualitative Organic Analysis, Natural Products Chemistry, Periodic Table, Chemical Bonding and Shapes of Compounds, Main Group Elements (s and p blocks), Analytical Chemistry.

4. Physics (PH)

Mathematical Methods, Mechanics and General Properties of Matter, Oscillations, Waves and Optics, Kinetic theory, Thermodynamics, Electricity and Magnetism, Modern Physics, Simple Oscillators, Solid State Physics, Devices, and Electronics

5. Geology (GG) 

Geomorphology, The Planet Earth, Structural Geology, Stratigraphy, Palaeontology, Mineralogy, Economic Geology, Petrology, Applied Geology

6. Mathematics (MA)

Functions of Two Real Variables, Sequences and Series of Real Numbers, Differential Equations, Group Theory, Vector Calculus, Linear Algebra, Real Analysis

7. Mathematical Statistics (MS)

The weightage of the test paper will be as follows: Mathematics (40% weightage) and Statistics (60% weightage).

  • Mathematics: Differential Calculus, Sequences and Series, Integral Calculus, Differential Equations, Matrices
  • Statistics: Random Variables, Probability, Standard Distributions, Sampling distributions, Joint Distributions, Estimation, Testing of Hypotheses

Important Instructions

Following are some important instructions regarding IIT JAM 2018 that aspirants should keep in my mind before appearing for the test:

  • There is the provision of using an online virtual calculator and hence, candidates should not bring any calculator with them.
  • Mobile phones or any other electronic devices are strictly prohibited inside the examination hall.
  • Charts, graph sheets, tables, are also NOT allowed inside the examination hall.
  • A scribble pad will be provided for rough work and this should be returned at the end of the examination
  • Candidates are required to select the answer for MCQ and MSQ type questions, and to enter the answer for NAT questions using only a mouse on a virtual numeric keypad (the keyboard of the computer will be disabled).
  • At the end of the 3-hours the computer will automatically close the examination.
  • Use of unfair means by a candidate in JAM 2018, whether detected at the time of examination, or at any other stage, will lead to cancellation of his/her candidature as well as disqualification of the candidate from appearing in JAM in future.
