JEE Main 2019 Exam Pattern: Paper I (B.Tech) and Paper II (B.Arch)

JEE Main Exam Pattern: The National Testing Agency (NTA) has released the official paper pattern of JEE Main. This year, Paper I and Paper II will be conducted in two shifts per day. With that, paper I will be held in fully computer-based mode, while paper II will be partly computer-based (mathematics and aptitude test) and partly pen-and-paper based (drawing test). 

The official notification released at has confirmed that no changes will be introduced in the syllabus and pattern. From 2019 onwards, NTA will hold both the papers twice a year – January and April. JEE Main (April session) will be held in 8 sittings from April 7 –April  20, apply online before March 7, 2019. Paper 1 consists of 3 sections namely Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics whereas, Paper 2 has 3 sectionsAptitude Test, Mathematics and Drawing Test. Candidates can opt for one or both the papers of JEE Main. The duration of the exam is 3 hours. 4 marks will be awarded for every correct answer, while 1 mark will be deducted for every incorrect answer.

  • Earlier, CBSE was the regulating body of JEE Main.
  • Paper 1 was held in online mode.
  • And, JEE Main Paper 2 was conducted in offline mode only.
  • CBSE used to release the official Mock Tests for the examination.

JEE Main Exam Pattern 2019 - Paper 1 (B.Tech/B.E.)

  • JEE Main Paper 1 is held in online mode i.e. computer mode.

  • As per JEE Main Brochure, exam pattern of JEE Main Paper 1 such as question paper, duration of exam details are given below:

Detailed JEE Main Paper 1 Exam Pattern

  • Sections/ Parts
    • Part I - Physics
    • Part II - Chemistry
    • Part III – Mathematics
  • Number of Questions – 90 questions with each section comprising of 30 questions each.
  • Nature of Questions – Objective type
  • Exam Mode – Choice between Online (CBT) or Offline mode (PBT)
  • Exam Duration – 3 hours | For candidates with 40% disability- 4 hours
  • Exam Medium – The question papers at all exam centers will be in Hindi and English. For exam centers in Gujarat, Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli, the medium of exam will also be available in Gujarati.
  • Marking Scheme – Each question carries 4 marks. For each incorrect answer, 1/4th mark of the total mark allotted will be deducted.

  • The exam will be conducted partially in computer-based and pen-paper mode.
  • JEE Main exam pattern for paper 2 includes objective (online) as well as drawing questions (offline).
  • This paper is a gateway for admission to UG architecture courses.

  • Sections/ Parts
    • Part I – Mathematics – Objective type questions
    • Part II – Aptitude Test – Objective type questions
    • Part III – Drawing Test – Questions based on drawing
  • Number of Questions – 82 questions.
  • Exam Duration – 3 Hours
  • Exam Medium – Hindi and English
  • Marking Scheme – All questions in Mathematics and Aptitude section have equal weightage i.e. 4 marks each. While questions based on drawing carry a total of 70 marks.
  • Negative Marking – For each incorrect answer, 1/4th mark of the total mark allotted will be deducted. For JEE Main Drawing Test, marks will be allotted on the basis of candidate’s drawing skills.

Checklist: Best Books for JEE Main 2019 Preparation

Exam Day Guidelines

  • Candidates who are appearing for JEE Main Paper 2 will have to bring their own geometry box set, pencils, erasers, color pencils or crayons.
  • Candidates will be instructed to open the seal of the Test Booklet 5 minutes before the test commences. They must confirm that the Test Booklet Code printed on Side-2 of the Answer Sheet is similar to the one printed on the Test Booklet. If there is a mismatch, it must be reported to the invigilator and get it replaced.
  • Candidates will be allowed to carry a cardboard or a clip board with nothing written on it to the exam hall as a pad to keep the exam paper on it to write smoothly.
  • Candidates should not carry any ball pens to the exam hall. It will be provided at the exam hall.
  • They will be provided with rough sheets to work out the calculations or any other rough work. These sheets have to be returned to the invigilator before leaving the exam hall.

JEE Main Exam Pattern 2019 FAQs

Ques. Is the exam pattern for JEE Main and Advanced different?

Ans. Yes, the exam pattern of JEE Main and JEE Advanced are different. JEE Main can be taken in either online or offline mode but JEE Advanced will not be held in completely online mode. Unlike JEE Main 2019, JEE Advanced exam pattern is not set.

Ques. Can we carry our own calculator at the exam center or we will be provided online calculator?

Ans. No calculator will be allowed to carry at the exam center and there will not be any online calculator. All of the calculations have to be done on the rough sheet.

Ques. What will be the level of difficulty for JEE Main 2019 exam?

Ans. There are high chances of the moderately high level of difficulty for JEE Main 2019 exam due to its high competency level.

Ques. What will be the mode of language in JEE Main Paper 1?

Ans. JEE Main Paper 1 will be available in both English and Hindi languages. However, for the exam centres chosen in Gujarat, Daman & Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, the paper will also be available in Gujarati language.

Ques. With the introduction of NTA, can we expect any changes in the paper pattern of JEE Main?

Ans. No, as per the official notification released at, there will be no changes in Mains Exam Pattern and syllabus.

Hi Satyam, It is expected that NTA will remove the upper age limit of 25 years for Main but it cannot be confirmed as no official notice has been released.
