JIPMER 2019 Exam Pattern and Marking Scheme

JIPMER Exam Pattern 2019: The MBBS entrance exam is scheduled for June 2 in online mode, by Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research, Puducherry. The exam may be conducted in single shift or multiple shifts based on the total number of registrations. The duration of JIPMER 2019 is 2 hours 30 minutes.

JIPMER 2019 exam consists of 200 MCQ type questions based on class 11 – 12 Science Syllabus with respect to the CBSE & State Board syllabus. The organising authority has also released the Mock Test for online examination to familiarize applicants for taking the exam in online mode.

The questions will be divided into 5 sections:

  1. Chemistry 
  2. Physics 
  3. Biology 
  4. English and comprehension 
  5. Logic and Quantitative Reasoning

JIPMER 2019 Exam Pattern in Detail

JIPMER 2019 entrance exam for MBBS will be a computer-based test. The test will consist of a total of 200 questions. All the questions will be objective type (MCQs). Each question will carry 1 mark. There is no negative marking in the test.

As the above table shows, the question paper will consist of 60 questions each from Physics, Chemistry, and Biology sections, while 10 questions each from Logic and Quantitative Reasoning, and English Comprehension sections.

  • There will be no penalty for leaving an answer blank.

JIPMER 2019 Syllabus

Below discussed is the exam syllabus for JIPMER 2019 exam. As discussed above the syllabus is based on 5 subject areas, namely Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English Comprehension and Logic and Quantitative Reasoning.

The syllabus of the entrance exam is based on Class 11 and Class 12 syllabus as prescribed by CBSE and State Board.


Introduction and measurementNeed for measurement in physical quantities, units for measurement, systems of unit, dimensions of physical quantities, orders of magnitude, random and instrumental errors, Trigonometric functions.
Description of motion in two and three dimensionsVectors in two or three dimension, vector addition and multiplication, scalar and vector products, motion in two dimensions, general relation among position-velocity-acceleration for motion in a plane and circular motion.
Description of motion in one dimensionObjects in motion in one dimension, motion in straight line, uniform, non-uniform motion, speed and velocity, relative velocity, average speed and instantaneous velocity, uniformly accelerated motion, acceleration in one dimensional motion.
Laws of motionForce and inertia, Momentum, conservation of momentum, rocket propulsion, static and kinetic frictions, rolling frictions, lubrications, inertial and non-inertial frames.
Rotational motionCentre of mass of rigid body, nature of rotational motion, torque, angular momentum and its geometrical and physical meaning, conservation of angular momentum, moment of inertia and its significance, comparison between translatory (linear) and rotational motion.
GravitationUniversal law of gravitation, inertial and gravitational mass, orbital velocity, geostationary satellites, gravitational potential, escape velocity and weightlessness.
OscillationsPeriodic and oscillatory motions, simple harmonic motion, resonance and damped oscillations with examples.
Magnetic effects of currentOersted’s observation, magnetic field due to straight wire, circular loop and solenoid, forces and torques on currents in a magnetic field, forces between two currents, definition of amphere, ammeter and voltmeter.


Basic concepts in ChemistryPhysical quantities and measurement in Chemistry, Matter and its nature, laws of chemical combinations, atomic, molecular, masses mole concept, chemical stoichiometry.
Atomic structureThomson’s and Rutherford atomic models, Bohr’s model of hydrogen atom, Heisenberg uncertainty principle, angular momentum and magnetic electronic spin and spin quantum numbers, Aufbau principle, Hund’s rule, electronic configurations of elements.
States of matterThree states of matter, Kinetic theory of gases, real gas and deviation from ideal behavior, intermolecular forces, solids and liquids.
Chemical energeticBasic concepts in thermodynamics, thermo chemical equations, enthalpy changes during phase transformation, Hess’s law, standard enthalpies of formation, bond enthalpies.
Classification of elements and periodicity in propertiesModern periodic law and present form of periodic table, electronic configuration and types of elements and s, p, d, f, periodic trends in properties and elements.
Basic principles of organic chemistryTetravalence of carbon, general introduction to naming organic compounds, electronic displacement in covalent bond, Fission of covalent bond, carbocations and carbon anions.

As for Logic and Quantitative Reasoning there is no set syllabus. However, candidates can expect questions from the following areas:

Important Instructions

The details mentioned below are important and must be noted before appearing for the JIPMER 2019 exam:

  • On the day of the exam, candidates must follow all the rules and regulations of the exam.
  • Candidates are expected to maintain decorum for smooth organisation of examination.
  • The exam will be conducted in two sessions- Morning Session & Afternoon Session. Candidates must be careful while noting exam timings, venue, and session.
  • Candidates must report to the examination hall at least 45 minutes prior to the commencement of the exam.
  • Candidates must carry a printout of the admit card and a valid photo identity proof at all times during the exam.
