MAT 2018 Preparation Tips by Najmul Afreen

Najmul Afreen appeared for MAT in 2013 and got admission in Doon University. He got 87 percentile. He went through almost 15 group discussions and personal Interviews. He says based on his performance he was offered admission by Alliance University, MS Ramiah Institute of Technology, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Amity University, Galgotias University. Apart from giving MAT he also appeared for GMAT and CAT but did not score well in these exams.

According to him in order to crack MAT one should focus on self -study rather than going for coaching institute. He used to prepare for 2 hours on regular basis which helped him attaining such a good score. Additionally he used to study last 10 years papers along with some reference books for preparation. He shares the following preparation tips with us:-

Quantitative Aptitude Section- Quantitative Aptitude and General Knowledge is not his forte. He studied R.S Aggarwal and Quicker Maths for preparation for Quant section. Moreover for preparing General Knowledge questions, he advices to read newspaper daily. Along with it you can also study Pratiyogita Darpan and go for Jagran Josh test for this section

Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning Section- Verbal Ability & logical reasoning part were his strong areas. He studied previous year sample papers and solved mock test series for preparing these sections.

Ques- Tell us about your experience about GD and Interview Round?

Ans- Well I have given 15 GD/PI in different colleges for taking admission in MBA. Experience was good as I was selected in every college and the main thing is if you have good MAT score then there are more chances of getting selected.

Ques-Name the Coaching Institute you joined and its Role in your Story?

Ans- Well I didn’t join any institutes for MAT exam as Self Study is the best study apart from my graduation I have given 2 hour daily for mat mock test and that was the key to success. I don’t think coaching and all will help you as because nowadays internet is everything.     

Ques- Apart for MAT, which exams you appeared for?

Ans-I have given CAT and GMAT but my score was not good as i m not fully prepared for these exams.

Ques-How did you manage your MAT preparation along with your Graduation studies/working hours?

Ans- I used to study 2 hours daily for MAT preparations and because of my religious self-study schedule I got 87% in MAT.

Ques-What were your Strong and Weak areas? How did you prepare and what special efforts did you put for improving them?

Ans- My weak area was quantitative aptitude and general knowledge so for that i purchased a book Quantitative aptitude by R. S. Aggarwal and for general knowledge i read newspapers and googled. The best book for quantitative aptitude is R.S. Aggarwal.

My strong areas are English and Reasoning for that I had purchased a book of sample paper and previous year paper and that’s it.

Ques- What is your Five Point Rule to excel MAT ?

Ans- My five point rules are

  • Go for self-study.
  • Solve previous year paper.
  • Google mock paper.
  • Atleast give 2 hours daily to preparation.
  • Concentrate on your weak areas

Ques- Which books you suggest for preparing Language Comprehension part?

Ans-For language comprehension I have chosen some mock test series and some books by Arihant and other publishers. And practice makes the man perfect so practice every day and it makes you perfect in language comprehension.

Ques-Share your thoughts on the Strategy for the aspirant who is starting two months before the exam.

Ans-For aspirants who are starting before two months i would suggest solve previous year paper Mock test series google some sites jagranjosh, jumbo test, etc. and do self-study about 4 hours a day i am sure you will get good marks.

Ques-List the Name of Books You Followed for Verbal Ability; Vocabulary and Grammar: Discuss Your Strategy for the Section

Ans- Read, practice and write is the only plan that would let you excel in this section. The more you read, the better you'll get at comprehensions and other questions on VA. So, try and enrich your vocabulary as much as possible. Practice comprehensions previous year sample papers, study material from coaching classes, etc. I think reading novels at this stage might not be particularly helpful. Newspapers may be a good way to revise the vocabulary - a lot of words from the words list appear in the newspapers. And newspapers help you keep updated with current affairs.
