NPAT 2027: Detailed Exam Pattern

The NPAT question paper has three sections with 40 questions each, all carrying equal weightage of 1 mark per question. The test runs for 100 minutes total with no individual section time caps — you can revisit and answer questions from any section in any order before the overall timer expires.

Note: There is no per-section time limit in NPAT. You have a single 100-minute window to attempt all 120 questions across the three sections in any order you choose.

NPAT Marking Scheme 2027

The NPAT 2027 marking scheme is one of the most student-friendly among national-level undergraduate entrance tests. You earn +1 mark for every correct answer. Wrong answers and unattempted questions both score 0 marks — there is no penalty for guessing.

There is no negative marking in NPAT 2027 — you should attempt all 120 questions to maximise your score.

Since NMIMS counts the best score across all attempts, the multiple-attempt policy compounds the advantage of the no-negative-marking rule. Students who take all three sittings can afford to attempt boldly in each one, knowing their worst attempts do not harm their admission chances.

NPAT Subject-Wise Exam Pattern 2027

Each of the three NPAT sections tests a distinct skill set. Understanding the topic distribution within each section helps you build a focused study plan. The approximate question counts below are based on the NPAT 2026 pattern analysis and are expected to remain consistent in 2027.

Section 1: Quantitative & Numerical Ability

This section tests mathematical skills at Class XI–XII level. Data Interpretation sets and arithmetic problems are the highest-yield areas for time efficiency. It carries 40 questions for 40 marks.

Section 2: Reasoning & General Intelligence

This section covers logical and analytical reasoning. Seating arrangement puzzles and coding-decoding sets appear frequently. It carries 40 questions for 40 marks.

Section 3: Proficiency in English Language

This section tests reading, vocabulary, and grammar. Reading Comprehension passages are the anchor of the section and account for the highest question cluster. It carries 40 questions for 40 marks.

NPAT Question Types 2027

NPAT 2027 uses only Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) throughout the paper. Each question provides four answer options with exactly one correct answer. There are no numerical input, true/false, assertion-reason, or descriptive question types in NPAT.

Since all questions are MCQs and there is no negative marking, you benefit from attempting every question. Eliminating even two obviously wrong options from a four-choice MCQ lifts your guess probability to 50% — never leave a question blank in NPAT.

NPAT Exam Pattern: Changes in 2027 vs Previous Year

The NPAT exam structure has been highly consistent across recent cycles. No structural changes have been announced for 2027 as of August 2026, and the 2027 Information Brochure is yet to be released by NMIMS. The most significant operational change introduced for the 2026 cycle — merging all admission rounds into a single unified round — is expected to continue in 2027.

How to Prepare Based on NPAT Exam Pattern

The NPAT structure gives you several clear levers: equal section weightage, no sectional time cap, no negative marking, and the ability to retake. Build your preparation strategy around these structural advantages rather than treating NPAT like a standard single-attempt exam.

1. Allocate equal preparation time to all three sections. Each section carries exactly 40 marks. Neglecting any one area has the same impact on your total as failing an entire subject — plan balanced, not biased, study cycles across Quant, Reasoning, and English.
2. Attempt every single question. NPAT has no negative marking. A blank answer earns the same 0 marks as a wrong answer. Eliminate the two most obviously incorrect options from each MCQ and commit to a best guess — this strategy costs nothing and can add 5–10 marks across a full paper.
3. Build a pace of 50 seconds per question. With 120 questions in 100 minutes, your average time budget is 50 seconds per question. Practise on timed mock tests to develop this habit — slow solvers often exhaust time on Data Interpretation or RC passages and leave easier questions unattempted.
4. Use the multiple-attempt policy as a diagnostic tool. NPAT allows up to 3 sittings in one cycle. Treat the first attempt as a live diagnostic — identify your weakest section by section score, focus preparation on it specifically, then target improvement in the retake rather than trying to improve uniformly across all three areas at once.
5. Prioritise Data Interpretation sets in Quantitative. DI sets cluster 4–5 questions around a single table or chart. Getting the base calculation right earns multiple marks with less time per mark than solving the same number of standalone arithmetic questions.
6. Read one editorial or opinion piece daily for the English section. NPAT RC passages test inference, tone, and vocabulary in context. A daily reading habit of 20–30 minutes on editorial content improves passage speed and contextual vocabulary simultaneously — two English sub-sections in one habit.
7. Map your optimal section order during mock tests. The no-sectional-limit policy lets you start with whichever section you find fastest and bank marks early. Test different section orders across practice tests and lock in the sequence that works for your profile on exam day.
