SSC has released the tentative vacancies available for the post of Stenographers Grade C and Grade D. At present, there are a total of 323 vacancies in Grade D and 31 vacancies in Grade C. The number of vacancies for SSC Stenographers 2017 has witnessed a dip as compared to last year

SSC Stenographers 2017 Selection Process

Candidates are selected in SSC Stenographers 2017 on the basis of two-stage selection process. The first stage is the written test whereas second stage is a skill test for testing the technical proficiency of candidates. Both the stages are discussed below

Written Test

SSC Stenographer 2017 exam is held in both English and Hindi languages. As per the exam pattern prescribed by the commission, SSC Stenographer 2017 question paper comprises 3 sections viz. General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness and English Language and Comprehension.

The duration of SSC Stenographer 2017 exam is 2 hours (2 hours 40 minutes for PwD category students). The paper consists of 200 questions each carrying 1 mark. Negative marking (-1/4th mark for every wrong answer) is also applicable. Read More About SSC Stenographer 2017 Exam Pattern

SSC Stenographers 2017 Skill Test

Candidates who qualify the written examination of SSC Stenographer 2017 will be shortlisted for the skill test. For this test, applicants have to listen to the dictation given to them for 10 minutes in English/ Hindi carefully. They will be required to type the same on a computer at a speed of 100 w.p.m. to be recruited for the post of a Grade C Stenographer while the speed should be 80 w.p.m for Grade D post.

The skill test for SSC Stenographer 2017 will be held in April or May 2018 at Regional, Sub- Regional Offices or other centers as decided by the Commission. The transcription will be evaluated electronically post submission.

SSC Stenographers 2017 Eligibility

All the aspirants must go through SSC Stenographers 2017 Eligibility Criteria before applying. Candidates should check out the guidelines related to nationality, age limit, academic discipline and other criteria mentioned below.


Aspirants belonging to any of the following nationalities can apply for the SSC Stenographer exam:

  • Indian citizen
  • Resident of Bhutan
  • Resident of Nepal
  • A Tibetan refugee, who have migrated with the intention of staying in India permanently
  • People of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and East African countries intending to settle in India permanently

Academic Qualification

  • Aspirants must have cleared class 12 or any equivalent qualification from a recognized board or university to fulfil the minimum qualification criteria required for appearing for SSC Stenographer exam.
  • Technical education degree/ diploma obtained through Open and Distance Learning mode can also apply for the entrance test provided it is approved by the UGC

Age Limit

  • Age of applicant must range from anywhere between 18 to 27 years.
  • Upper age limit for the post of Stenographer Grade C and D can be relaxed for candidates belonging to various reserved categories (SC/ST/OBC/PH), Ex-Servicemen, Central Government Employees and J&K domiciled candidates.
