XAT Exam Pattern 2027: Overview

XAT 2027: Detailed Exam Pattern

XAT 2027 is divided into two parts. Part 1 has three sections — Verbal and Logical Reasoning (VALR), Decision Making (DM), and Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation (QA & DI) — all within a shared 170-minute window. Part 2 contains 20 General Knowledge questions answered in a separate 10-minute window. Only Part 1 marks count towards your XAT percentile.

Note: Part 1 has no sectional time cap — you manage the full 170 minutes across VALR, DM, and QA & DI in any order. Part 2 (GK) opens automatically after Part 1 closes and has a strict 10-minute window.

XAT Marking Scheme 2027

XAT 2027 uses a +1 / -0.25 marking scheme for Part 1. The exam also penalises excessive unattempted questions: you may skip up to 8 questions in Part 1 without any cost. From the 9th unattempted question onwards, each additional skip deducts -0.10 marks. The GK section in Part 2 carries no negative marking — attempt all 20 GK questions freely.

Negative marking of 0.25 marks applies to every wrong answer in Part 1 — avoid random guessing in VALR, Decision Making, and QA & DI.

There is no negative marking for GK questions in Part 2 — attempt all 20 questions without any risk to your score.

Note on the Unattempted Penalty: The counter runs across all three Part 1 sections combined — not per section. Aim to attempt at least 67 out of 75 Part 1 questions to avoid triggering the penalty. The counter resets to zero when Part 2 (GK) begins; the penalty rule does not apply to GK.

XAT Subject-Wise Exam Pattern 2027

XAT 2027 assesses four distinct competency areas across two parts. QA & DI has the highest weightage at 28 questions, followed by VALR (26) and Decision Making (21). The GK section (20 questions) is assessed separately and does not count towards the percentile.

1. Verbal and Logical Reasoning (VALR) — 26 Questions, 26 Marks

VALR combines English comprehension with analytical and logical reasoning. XAT passages are denser and more abstract than those in most other MBA entrance exams — expect philosophy, literature, and ethics-themed reading passages. Argument-based and inference questions appear alongside grammar and vocabulary items.

2. Decision Making (DM) — 21 Questions, 21 Marks

Decision Making is XAT’s signature section — no other major MBA entrance exam tests this skill separately. Questions appear in sets built around a real-world scenario: you select the most appropriate action considering ethical, business, and social dimensions. DM preparation cannot be crammed; it requires sustained practice with case-based scenarios.

3. Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation (QA & DI) — 28 Questions, 28 Marks

QA & DI is the largest section in XAT 2027. It blends standard quantitative topics with data-based reasoning. DI sets typically appear in clusters of 3–5 questions and are calculation-intensive. Arithmetic and Data Interpretation together account for roughly half the section’s questions.

4. General Knowledge (GK) — 20 Questions (Part 2; Not in Percentile)

GK forms Part 2 of XAT 2027 and lasts 10 minutes. It is not counted in the XAT percentile. Institutes like XLRI assess GK performance independently during the GD-PI round. Current affairs carries higher weightage, accounting for roughly 12 of the 20 questions.

XAT Question Types 2027

XAT 2027 uses only Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) across all four sections. Each question offers five answer options — one more than the four-option format used in CAT. This extra distractor makes elimination harder and increases the cost of random guessing in Part 1.

XAT questions are known for their conceptual depth and language complexity. Decision Making questions are scenario-driven and rely on ethical judgement — not just calculation. Reading Comprehension passages in VALR tend to be longer and more philosophical than those in CAT. QA & DI questions often involve multi-step logic rather than straightforward formula application.

Note: XAT removed the Analytical Essay Writing (AEW) section in a prior cycle. XAT 2027 has no essay or descriptive component — all scoring is based entirely on MCQ responses.

XAT Exam Pattern: Changes in 2027 vs Previous Year

Based on the official XAT 2027 notification released in July 2026, no major changes are announced in the exam pattern for 2027. The structure, section count, question distribution, and marking scheme remain consistent with XAT 2026. The XAT 2027 pattern remains stable with no changes from 2026 — preparation resources and strategies built around XAT 2026 apply directly to XAT 2027.

How to Prepare Based on XAT Exam Pattern

The XAT 2027 pattern creates specific preparation requirements. The two-part structure, unique Decision Making section, the unattempted-question penalty, and the five-option MCQ format all require approach adjustments compared to CAT or SNAP preparation.

1. Build Decision Making skills first — it takes the longest. DM is unique to XAT and cannot be crammed. Start solving case-based ethical and situational DM questions at least 4–5 months before the exam. It is the section most students underestimate when coming from a CAT background.
2. Track your unattempted count through Part 1. The -0.10 penalty kicks in from the 9th unattempted question across VALR, DM, and QA & DI combined. Aim to attempt at least 67 of the 75 Part 1 questions to stay clear of the penalty zone.
3. Plan a personal time split for Part 1’s 170 minutes. A common effective strategy is 40–45 minutes for VALR, 45–50 minutes for DM, and 75–80 minutes for QA & DI. Adjust based on mock test results — no single split works for everyone.
4. Prioritise QA & DI — it has the most questions. With 28 questions and 28 marks, QA & DI carries the highest individual weightage in Part 1. Focus on DI sets and Arithmetic, which together account for roughly half the section.
5. Do not guess randomly in Part 1 — the five-option format raises the cost. A wrong answer in Part 1 costs a net 1.25 marks: you lose the +1 you could have earned and pay an additional -0.25. In GK (Part 2), there is no penalty — attempt all 20 questions even without certainty.
6. Read widely for VALR. XAT RC passages are often philosophical, literary, or abstract. Regular reading of long-form essays, editorials, and literary non-fiction builds the comprehension speed needed for 26 VALR questions in the shared 170-minute window.
7. Focus GK prep on the last 12 months of current affairs. Current affairs accounts for 12 of 20 GK questions. Track business news, economic policy, and national/international developments from November 2025 onwards to cover the full window leading up to January 2027.
