Private versus Public: Where lies the difference?

Out of 426 universities in Germany, 300 are public. Despite being similar in many areas, the differences cannot be ignored. Candidates looking to pursue higher education in this country are often not informed adequately which could lead to wrong decisions. Despite the fact that odds favor public over private, the quality of education and research are not really poles apart. We have listed the major differences to help you make an informed decision.

    Public university Private university
Run and funded by the state government. Run by private entities. Funded by tuition and other fees charged from students
Low acceptance rate, higher academic standards. Candidates failing to meet these standards are not given more chances. Admission criteria is lower. Even if the candidate fails to meet the requirements, they are allowed to take a preparatory course to qualify.
Deadlines in most public universities are similar - mid-July and mid-January. Private colleges, however, set their own deadlines which differ from one college to another.
Employability rates of public colleges are higher; employers show more confidence in public university graduates. The level of practical knowledge among private college graduates is lower, resulting in a lower employability rate.
A higher number of scholarships offered to national and international students. Compared to public colleges, the number of scholarships offered is lower.
The student to teacher ratio is high as more students are enrolled. Low student to teacher ratio; consider a private college if you prefer smaller classes.
The global ranking of public colleges is better as some of the best institutions in the world in Germany are state-funded. The average ranking of private schools is lower than that of public schools but it does not mean that the standard of education is compromised.
