Immigration New Zealand has raised qualification points for an overseas bachelor’s degree to 4 from 3 under the Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa, effective August 24, 2026. The change helps Indian graduates targeting New Zealand PR through the points-based route. The government confirmed the final rules on June 18, 2026. Two new residence pathways will also open alongside the revised points system.

  • Overseas bachelor’s degrees now score 4 points instead of 3, while master’s and doctoral points stay unchanged.
  • Two new pathways launch on August 24, 2026: the Skilled Work Experience Pathway and the Trades and Technician Pathway.
  • English language test validity extends to 5 years from 2 years for eligible occupational registration applicants.

The Skilled Migrant Category is New Zealand’s main points-based residence route. Applicants still need 6 points in total to qualify. The reset lets Indian degree holders reach that bar with less New Zealand work experience.

What Changes for Indian Graduates on August 24, 2026

The revised points table rewards higher qualifications and New Zealand study. Bachelor’s degrees earned outside New Zealand now carry 4 points. Qualifications accredited under the Washington and Sydney Accords also move to 4 points. Indian engineering degrees from Washington Accord signatory bodies qualify here.

Qualification Points Before Points From August 24, 2026
Overseas bachelor’s degree 3 4
Washington/Sydney Accord degree 3 4
Master’s degree (overseas) 5 5
Doctoral degree (overseas) 6 6

New Zealand qualifications will earn one extra point compared with the same overseas degree. Master’s and doctoral degrees are treated the same either way. Level 8 and 9 qualifications now need a supporting bachelor’s degree with evidence of both, per Immigration New Zealand.

What it means for Indian Students: A Washington Accord B.Tech from an NBA-accredited Indian institute now closes two-thirds of the 6-point bar on its own. That cuts the required skilled New Zealand work experience by up to a year for many applicants.

New Skilled Work Experience Pathway Explained

This pathway suits Indian professionals with strong overseas experience but no New Zealand degree. The rules require at least 5 years of directly relevant skilled work experience. That must be in ANZSCO skill level 1 to 3 occupations.

Applicants also need 2 years of skilled work in New Zealand paid at 1.1 times the Skilled Migrant Category median wage. Self-employment cannot be used to meet the experience test. The pathway is aimed at experienced hires already in the country on a work visa.

Trades and Technician Pathway: Who Qualifies

This pathway targets specified trade and technician occupations at skill levels 1 to 3. Applicants must hold a Level 4 or higher qualification on the New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework. That means a minimum 120 credits for a New Zealand qualification.

The experience test is 4 years of post-qualification work, of which 1.5 years must be skilled work in New Zealand at the median wage threshold. Indian ITI graduates and diploma-holders working in eligible trades gain a dedicated route for the first time.

Important Distinction: The two new pathways are not extras on top of the points system. Each is a standalone route with its own criteria. Applicants pick one entry door and meet all its tests, rather than mixing points with work experience credits.

How Do the New Wage Rules Affect Indian Applicants?

The old regime forced applicants to meet one wage rate during work and a higher rate at the residence stage. That double bar has been dropped. Migrants will now meet the Skilled Migrant Category median wage in effect when they start accruing skilled work experience.

They must maintain at least that same rate at the residence application stage. A 5-month grace period applies after the visa is granted. Immigration New Zealand also extended English test validity for eligible occupational registration applicants to 5 years from 2. CPA Australia members can now claim 6 points as accountants.

What Should Indian Students Do Now?

The August 24 switch reshapes the maths for anyone building a New Zealand residence plan. Fresh Indian graduates studying in New Zealand gain most under the revised points table. Working professionals gain a dedicated non-points pathway for the first time.

  1. Confirm your Indian bachelor’s programme is Washington Accord accredited through the National Board of Accreditation.
  2. Recalculate your point score under the new table before lodging an Expression of Interest.
  3. If you are on a post-study work visa, target roles paid at or above the SMC median wage to bank skilled experience.
  4. Trades and technician workers should check their occupation appears on the eligible list published by Immigration New Zealand.
  5. Book or refresh your English test after August 24 to lock in the new 5-year validity window.

Indian graduates already on a Post Study Work Visa in New Zealand are the clearest winners. The higher qualification points and the trimmed wage rule together shorten the residence timeline. August 24, 2026 is the trigger date for both changes.

Next Key Date for SMC Applicants: The revised points table and both new pathways take effect on Sunday, August 24, 2026. Expressions of Interest submitted from that date will be assessed under the new rules.
