Q.1. AKGEC has come a long way since it is established. What would you like to say on that?
Ans. Established in 1998, AKGEC has in fact come a long way not only in academics but also in infrastructure, student activities and industry academia associations. Continuous improvement in academic results with top positions in University merit list and stupendous performance in cultural, technical and sports events at inter and intra college levels have been distinct achievements of the college. The excellent academic performance combined with all round development have translated into good placements & careers as well as brilliant opportunities for higher studies for our students.
The college has built a brilliant faculty pool of experience and high level intellectual capital base. The college infrastructure has expanded over the years with state-of-the-art academic blocks, laboratories, computing facilities and hostels being added to the existing ones. With its commitment to produce highly trained manpower as industry ready professionals, Ajay Kumar Garg Engineering College has collaborated with technology leaders in manufacturing and automation domains and set up various Centres of Excellence.
Q.2. Tell us something about your rich academic, research and administrative experience?
Ans. I completed my B.Tech from IIT Kanpur, M.S. from CIT, Cranfield, U.K. and Ph.D from IISc Bangalore. During my career of nearly three decades in the Indian Air Force and Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO), I undertook various key appointments including Chief Engineering Officer of an Operational Base, Director (Engg) at Air HQ, Project Director at Centre for Airborne Systems and nine years of pioneering R&D work on the prestigious AWACS project in DRDO.
In my 12 years tenure at AKGEC, I have persistently worked towards setting new benchmarks in academic excellence as well as setting up industry-academia interface to make the students globally competitive and employable. The emphasis has always been on all round development with focus on inculcating self discipline, good moral values, ethics, work culture and a positive attitude to make the students not just competent professionals but also good citizens and responsible members of the society.
Q.3. What’s your take on the increasing entrepreneurship in India, as lots of start-ups are coming up?
Ans. In a developing country like India, there is no dearth of opportunities as unfulfilled aspirations and desires are plenty, just waiting to be recognized and converted into a meaningful businesses. Simultaneously, the appetite for risk amongst the youth – largely driving the start-up story – has increased dramatically.
Also, it would not be out of place to mention about the pivotal role technology in facilitating the phenomenal flourish of start-ups. In the years to come, entrepreneurship will form the basis of development process in India. Home-grown businesses will be key in filling the gap where public resources are too taxed to take up the challenge.
However, some caution would be well advised. Brilliant and innovative ideas without a sound business model can go downhill very quickly. Early stage start-ups need to work on long-term sustainability and not simply focus on expanding their footprint. If they can work like a start-up but think like a MNC, there is nothing to stop the budding entrepreneurs in India.
Q.4. What is done at the Institute to make the student an all rounder?
Ans. AKGEC believes in a holistic development of the students. Even though, academics takes the highest level of priority, students are encouraged, motivated and supported to participate in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities as well.
The college provides a very conducive environment and academic system to enable its students to develop and realize their full potential. Initiatives including academic & attendance awards, student counseling, buddy programme and the mentorship programme have been introduced to motivate the meritorious students and at the same time help the under performing students to perform better. Regular guest lectures, seminars, workshops and conferences organized in the college bring awareness on the emerging trends and current development.
The mandatory personality development programme is conducted with the objective to nurture soft skills in the students and to develop sound thinking and analytical skills. The Centres of Excellence and the courses beyond the curriculum prepare the students to be ready for industrial environment and have played a key role in good placements in the past. AKGEC not only discerns its responsibility towards building the future of the country but also comprehends its social accountability by organizing events like blood donation camp and communal harmony camp.

Ans. I will particularly take this opportunity to introduce the vision and mission of AKGEC. Our vision is to introduce undergraduate and postgraduate courses for all engineering branches and award of Ph.D degrees, to be one of the best engineering institution in the country and to be a “Deemed University”.
The mission of AKGEC is to provide and maintain academic environment and systems of highest standard, enabling maximum learning to produce competent professionals. We also aim at achieving this through transparent academic and administrative policies in the college. We intend to provide conducive atmosphere for research, development and consultancy services to our faculty at national and international level.
With our vision and conviction, we strive to further establish a brighter, smarter, enterprising work force and excellent academic achievements. We look forward to scaling new heights in excellence and contribute to nation building, with the support of our management, faculty, staff and students of AKGEC,
Q.9. Tell us your plans about making this institute one of the premier institutes of this country?
Ans. The students, faculty and execution of the curriculum are the three most important aspects of any educational institution; everything else is a supporting function. We at AKGEC are extremely sensitive when it comes to maintaining theses three functions. At AKGEC, we make sure merit is the sole deciding criteria during admissions. At the same time, we are continuously striving to enlist and retain some of the most qualified and competent faculty from every field of engineering.
We also lay a lot of emphasis on enabling the faculty to grow with us through various innovative initiatives. There is a lot of focus on how much a student is learning and how useful will that be for the student. To make sure of this, we go beyond conventional modes and give students opportunities to gain hands-on experience and learning.
In pursuit of its industry-academia interaction, the college has established various Centres of Excellence in association with prominent industry giants. Good placements are an important aspect of any Institute. The highly competent training and placement team engages in best opportunities for training and job placement of students besides arranging seminars, personality development programmes, career counseling and industrial visits to provide an excellent exposure to the students. A sense of civic and social responsibility, good ethics and a positive attitude are inculcated in each member of the AKGEC family. Focused effort for imbibing these ethics is part of the AKGEC culture.
In the coming years, if we continue to focus on these aspects and make sure each of them is in sync, we are confident other things will automatically fall into place. Ultimately this will create a strong brand name for the AKGEC and will make it easier to attract the best talent – faculty or students as well as showcase our achievements across the country.
Q.10. Any suggestion you would like to give to the current youth?
Ans. I would like to send out a very simple message for today's youth - Have faith in yourself. The importance of this is often overlooked. If the youth of the country believe in themselves and their abilities, follow their ideas, however wild they may seem, charge ahead even when the road isn't very clear, then they can be sure of an extremely bright future ahead.
It is imperative for them to challenge established norms and practices, not accept them, and always try and push the boundaries. Finally, they should be convinced that they can excel, and work hard to achieve it. I advise the youth to have courage and conviction to aim high in their lives and achieve the goals by observing discipline and dedication in approach.
In all of this, it would be wise to not let go of their values and integrity. It is these things that will keep them on course even when the going gets tough, which bound to happen at a certain stage. To sum it up, belief in the self, yearning to excel and a solid foundation of values can define your life the way you want it.Last Updated - 03 Jun 2016
