The Interview

Q 1. Kindly tell us about your experience in the education industry and what makes it the best industry to work in?

Ans. Being an academician, I always prefer the education industry. I have started the journey from lecturer - Asst. Professor -  Professor – HOD and now Principal at present. It makes easy to understand the path to bring the academic Institute towards its vision, i.e. academic excellence.

Here, I can explore my thoughts with the students. I can nurture my learning with challenging projects. In other industries, they focus on an area to work on and are solely defined by the management. But in the education industry, we can perform interdisciplinary work and interact directly with students. So, as an academician point of view, I can get my choices under one roof in the education industry.

Q 2. What are significant challenges that you are facing in bringing out the real vision of the Organization?

Ans. Nowadays, the significant challenges are to cope up with rapid technological change and to fit in the competitive market.

Q 3. Tell us about some of your experiences and how does your curriculum ensure the best practices of the industry?

Ans. Nowadays, there are a large number of colleges which run – general courses, engineering courses, management courses and other professional courses. All of these colleges follow the curriculum as offered by their affiliating university. In such a situation under a single university, there are a large number of colleges, it is never possible to make uniform infrastructure, human resources in each college though they are following the same curriculum.

From this point of view, the institutes/colleges which are capable of framing out the outcome based curriculum considering the need of society -- local needs, industry needs, etc. become an Autonomous Institute (Academically Autonomous) under the affiliation of mother University. The Autonomous status of the college is conferred by University Grant Commission with the consent of State Government and Affiliating University. In this way, the Institute named Narula Institute of Technology, under the aegis JIS Group has got the Autonomous Status and effort is given to form a dynamic industry friendly syllabus.

Being an autonomous institute, we have a freedom to design our own curriculum. The strength of our curriculum is as follows:

  • The core committee has been formed with the experts of industries as well as reputed Universities.
  • Proper amalgamation of latest technology and basics of engineering
  • Soft skill development program
  • Technical skill development program
  • Project based learning
  • Laboratory oriented theory
  • Options for innovative experiment in labs
  • Scope for collaborative project with industry in final year
  • Compulsory training program from industry

Q 4. What goals do you have in your mind for NIT?
Ans. The goal of Narula Institute of Technology is to create academic excellence and to develop responsible citizens who would also be successful in their respective professional field.

Q 5. There have been talks of College Name having very different plans for delivering educational expertise to every aspirant, kindly elaborate on it more?

Ans. The educational expertise can be delivered through Consultancy project, Invited lecture, Funded project, Faculty/Student exchange program, Interdisciplinary research. At our Institute, there are consultancy projects given by Industry mainly in Civil Engineering department and DST, UGC, AICTE & DAE funded projects are in process in a different department.  There is a very good platform for interdisciplinary research, in which faculty members of the different department and other group colleges form a team to solve a common problem. Few faculty members gave invited lecture depending on their expertise to other Institute especially at NIT Sikkim and also at Institute in Taiwan.

Q 6. How do you plan to build a positive school culture or climate in College Name?

Ans. To maintain a healthy academic atmosphere, it is utmost necessary to adopt innovative teaching learning methodology to provide learner centric education and to encourage

the students towards innovation through which few of them can be the future entrepreneurs. Nowadays, grooming the students both in soft skill and technical skill from the day of entering the Institute becomes an essential part to create a healthy atmosphere, as well as it is most important to become acceptable by the Industry. Apart from this team work, fine-tuning in any situation, managerial skill, etc. are also essential parameters for the overall growth of a student.

At Narula Institute of Technology, there is a very effective mentor-mentee scheme where under each faculty, a group of students is assigned to solve their problem academically and/or personally. A good administrative workflow is maintained to solve any kind of issues. Guardian meet is organized on regular basis. Apart from the regular academic activity, the Student Life Centre (SLC) has been formed to provide the students a wonderful platform through different clubs i.e. Cultural Club, Sports Club, Science & Technology Club, Photography Club, Dance Club, Environmental Club etc. along with the established NSS unit.

Q 7. What is your philosophy of leadership? How would you describe your leadership style?
Leadership is about inspiring a group of individuals to achieve extraordinary things. It is a privilege that carries with it the responsibility to inspire others, and to direct them to attain the vision and goals of the organization. A person would be a perfect leader when he/she would be acceptable by the majority of the stakeholders. The acceptance becomes through the proper attire, behavior, acquaintance, knowledge and values with the leader. The Leader should maintain the ethics and understand the situation and also feel psychology of the people with whom he/she is doing work.

As a leader, it is my job to know the staff and support their professional development, build up an interest in them as individuals and recognize their achievements. To accomplish this, it is important that I am approachable. Staff and students need to feel comfortable delivering news, both good and bad so that as a leader I can always be in the information flow. I believe that the most important job of leadership is to develop leadership and pride within all stakeholders of our organization. I want every individual in the institute to feel proud of what they do, under- stand how their job contributes to the overall Institute and feel that in some way they too can provide leadership.

Q 8. What would be your ideal school environment, and how would you encourage that kind of culture?

Ans. The ideal school environment should provide the platform where academics, research, innovations, cultural activities, sports will stand simultaneously. In Narula Institute of Technology, the students nurture the above activities as per their talent under the guidance of faculty member who acts as a mentor and also it provides learner centric education.

In an engineering college, the students can be classified into three categories: one group interested in higher studies, for this kind of students advance training is required, in the Narula Institute of Technology under JIS Group provides the students who are getting higher score for a winter camp to Asian Institute of Technology – B (AIT) Bangkok for better academic exposure. The 2nd group of students is interested in placement they are gone through soft skill & technical skill program and also there is Tech finishing school program to meet the gap between academia & Industry. Another group of students who have innovation in mind is nurtured for the development of technical & managerial skill through different entrepreneurship program, ultimately few of them became the entrepreneur in a future life. Apart from these, Institute encourages the students for athletic, extracurricular, co-curricular and social activities which also play an important role to the learner and also helps to improve stress tolerance.

Q 9. Any suggestions you would like to give to the current youth and the aspiring students?

Ans. Each & every student must acquire specific quality. It is required to nurture this quality to become successful in this direction. After all, it is mandatory for each and every one to be a responsible and be a good human being.
