B Daniel Prabhakar Rao is the Dean of Hyderabad Institute of Technology and Management. In his interview, he gives a glimpse of his journey in the education domain and why it is the best industry to work in. He mentions that the college practice initiatives where students’ opinions are taken seriously and on priority. This helps them understand the adversities they are facing and come up with an innovative solution to help them excel. Also, he believes that Students should not be overloaded with the burden of subject for the sake of marks. This reduces their capability, rather they should explore beyond the books to come up with innovative ideas. This helps the students to build an aptitude and that’s what the recruiters look for. They want their candidates to be smart and to stand out amongst their peers. He concludes by stating that he believes in bringing change in the students by developing their mentality towards career and other pivotal domains.
It is the best industry to work in because it serves as the backbone of the country
I feel it's the best organization to work in because it’s the only industry we can share the knowledge with students. According to a philosophy “sharing knowledge is adding knowledge”. This Philosophy defines why the education industry is the best industry. Education industry is basically the backbone of any society. More of giving knowledge on one particular subject or a particular technology, education will help human beings to become a right personality. Helping the youth to realize their potential and providing them the capability to guide their juniors or next generation in a proper direction will be done only through education.
We practice initiatives where students’ opinions and feedback are considered on priority
At HITAM, we organize many curriculum activities such as CDC, SSDC, epics, and toastmasters. There are also many initiatives such as SSG, affinity clubs, etc. This helps students to get placed in their interested fields, and pursue their goals. Although these are not a part of the regular curriculum, we practice these initiatives where students’ opinions and feedback are considered as the first priority. At HITAM we have centralized curriculum control, we adopt a broader range of teaching techniques to offer a more responsive curriculum, so our students can adapt and establish links with service providers beyond the college. We have revised our primary curriculum to encourage the use of active teaching, and learning methodologies and the post-primary syllabic to emphasize more independent, active learning for our students.
We want the students to excel in theoretical and practical knowledge
I scan from the eyes to seek the level of interest a candidate shows in the subject or not as per the current University curriculum.. Nowadays, a student's mindset is capable of completing the theoretical subject two days prior to the exam. But I expect the aspirant to take it seriously from the starting of the semester, so that they can score well and apart from theoretical they can also gain practical knowledge too, and a student should have passion and commitment towards their goals and must have the right attitude throughout their life.
We customize our way of delivering education according to the requirements of the students
At HITAM, we try to understand the perspective of our students. Every year we host a meeting with our management to reform the teaching method. When our facilities teach the same regular topic in a reformed manner, it helps the students to become more enthusiastic, and they get excited to see new ways of learning rather than regular form, and even we take feedback from them to understand their vision which helps us to customize our learning too.
Students should not be overloaded with the burden of subject for the sake of marks
It's important to understand that the students are paying attention to all the subjects. We shouldn’t overload them with the burden of all the subjects. We as a teacher should make progress to make connections with students, so that they won’t feel left out. As a teacher in this college, I still feel making a connection with them is really important before teaching the subject. For our and their better understanding. Establishing a bond is always good. Thus, I believe to have a friendly approach with students and encourage them in other activities too, and at HITAM we want to be a facilitator to the students and support them to achieve their ideas and goals.
Companies look for technically sound students who are capable of delivering the best
Opportunities are plenty nowadays. Earlier, we had a monotonous way of selecting such as tier 1 colleges to get the best placements, whereas, tier 2 colleges get very few. But those concepts are totally skipped now. Companies are encouraging students who are technically good. Students should focus on skills rather than percentages or marks, so that, they'll have good career opportunities. And also, should make sure that they have a long-term plan and start working on it from the day.
I believe in bringing change in the students by developing their mentality towards career and other pivotal domains
My philosophy of leadership is to be one who stands out and makes sure to bring out a change in the students towards their career and help realize the importance of themselves, so that they can be the role model for younger generations. At HITAM we encourage students for centric, and we revolve around better ideas, and we like to listen to the ideas from our students and guide them accordingly. At the same time, from our past education experiences, it is our duty to educate them about industrial needs, and support them to reach their goals.
Students should explore as much as they can with an open mindset
Youth is a very tender age, and the brain accepts anything which helps to do miracles. Don't stick with the regular curriculum or old model instead think out of the box. Never limit your ideas and thoughts. This is the only age where you can achieve your goals and set your life in the right direction. Youth should realize the importance of career and achievements at the right Time. And they should know their potential and should be a role model to upcoming generations.
