Q.1. Kindly tell us about your experience in the education industry and what makes it the best industry to work in?

Ans. Being in an educational institution is a matter of great privilege. For me it is a “Privilege to serve and Privilege to excel”. It is a sector which nurtures talent and creates the vital capability for nation building & techno economic advancement of the country. Further, education is the foundation of a civilized human society.

As such, it calls upon everyone that is the promoters, educators and the students to exhibit highest levels of ethical and moral compliance to work ethics, human values and professional code of conduct. Thebeauty of the education sector is that it regularly receives fresh reservoir of talent each year in its fold and thus has great opportunities to nurture talent, create new knowledge and develop new technologies and services.

Now that, the power of connectivity has made the power of mind work much faster and more focused, we shall see mind bubbling advances in Science & Technology, Medical Sciences, Bio-Info-Nano Sciences and other aspects of human endeavours rolling out from the universities & institutions of higher learning. It is for this unique privilege education still remains as the best industry to work in.

Ans. Prof PB Sharma As the Vice Chancellor of Amity University Gurgaon, I have a great opportunity to nurture a self financed University which is a part of Amity Education Group enjoying great reputation for its focus on world quality education, industry relevant research and society and industry centric innovations.

Amity being a Research and Innovation driven University, I have the challenge of attracting the best of the talent both in the student community as well as the faculty and provide them the vital eco-system for the tripod of education, innovation and entrepreneurship and thus make profound contribution to nation building in line with the vision of the Founder President, Dr Ashok K Chauhan.

I may add that, my experience of working as Professor in IIT Delhi, Principal & Director of Delhi College of Engineering, as the Founder Vice Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi Technological University and also as the Founder Vice Chancellor of Delhi Technological University and my globalexposure to higher education gives me a unique advantage to serve Amity University and take it to new bench marks of success and glory.

Q.4. You have good 47 years of experience in education sector and you’ve always excelled academically, any general life tips you’d like to share with all the people reading this?

Ans. My secret of success is total dedication and unconditional commitment to the work activity  no matter where I am i.e. whether at University of Birmingham, IIT, Delhi, DCE, DTU or now at Amity University.

For positions of leadership in institutions and universities you need people of vision and firm commitment and resolve to nurture quality, industry and society relevance and team excellence. Further, educational leaders in my opinion should posses exceptional qualities of humility, high spiritual quotient so that they are always eager to serve and excel at the same time working with the mindset of a breakthrough leader having speed leadership quality.

I sincerely summit that In my 47 years of service line education sector with such a mindset and with the values narrated above. I have never ever submitted or surrendered to mediocrity, always supported meritocracy, innovative minds and all those whose sincerely devoted themselves to the service of student community and the society.

Q.5. How do you build a positive school culture or climate?

Ans. Positivity holds the key for success of an individual and surely of an organization. However, I must say that creating a culture of positivity and a climate to nurture talent and innovations is the dire need today in educational campuses in India. We need to train our institutional leaders, Deans, Heads of the Departments on the strategic framework to nurture a culture of positivity.

For me it was possible to build a culture of positivity as I considered my service as a privilege to serve and privilege to inspire and lead my team to glory.

Q.6. What is your philosophy of leadership? How would you describe your leadership style?

Ans. For me leadership is creating and leading a winning team. You need to lead by example of yourself as these days no amount of preaching has a meaning unless you yourself practice what you want others to adorn. Further leaders are great visionaries and are always exhibiting high energy levels and enthusiasm to create and manage change.

Today our leaders should understand the imperatives of leadership in the age of knowledge and connected world. A new meaning and purpose of leadership is to be defined in the context of managing uncertainty and informed society.

Q.7. Vice-Chancellor’s position require intense time-management. How do you manage your time?

Ans. All along my tenure as Vice-chancellor, I have been practicing the style of Innovative Management, prioritizing my work every day and creating ample opportunity to serve my students and Amity University faculty community besides creating reasonable time for myself for creative thinking for my university.

My Vice-chancellorship is a combination of openness, participative decision making and yet leading from the front, a winning combination in today’s knowledge age.

Q.8. Good and bad points of this era’s students as compared to your time?

Ans. The students of today as compared to students of my time are much better informed, better equipped with tech-saviness and are well supported by the knowledge infrastructure and global perception. In our student days even the books were not available what to talk of the digital knowledge reservoir. But make no mistake, that the students of our age were far more serious about their education and so were the teachers highly caring and devoted to our well being. That made us a class apart. India and the world at large is reaping rich dividends of our generation’s capabilities nurtured in our institutions and universities.

I am sure the current generation, “GEN I” as I call them, should shoulder the responsibility to take the nation to new alter of accomplishment and glory, now that they are better equipped and empowered with “wings of knowledge and power of innovations”. For this “GEN I”, “I” is innovation and “I” is the power of infinity, sky is the limit for them to rise to glory.

Q.9. Any suggestions you would like to give to the current youth and the aspiring management students?

Ans. Nurture your talent on the strength of the “purity of mind”, “positivity of thoughts” and get inspired to serve and excel in today’s testing times. Those in management must recognize the unique privilege they have, to create a bright future for the vast humanity full of happiness and abundance of prosperity.
