At present, Dr. Salwan is the Vice-Chancellor of the Apeejay Stya University and Chief Executive Officer (Higher Education) of the Apeejay Education Society
Dr. S.K. Salwan is an expert in Strategic Defence and Defence Technologies. He has served as the Director of three national level laboratories and establishment of Defence Research. He has been the Advisor (Strategic Projects) of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). He was appointed as Emeritus Scientist DRDO in 2003 by the President of India. Dr. Salwan was the Vice-Chancellor of the Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar (2003-2008) and the Founder Vice-Chancellor the Apeejay Stya University. He has been distinguished professor and DRDO fellow while holding Nagchowdhary Chair. Dr. Salwan is Chairman, Armament Research Board and Chairman, Research Council ARDE Pune. Dr. Salwan is a member of the Advisory Group of Experts, Ministry of Railways, Railway Board and Member of the Board of Governors of many Universities in India and abroad. Dr. Salwan is member of ‘Make in India’ in Body Armour, NITI Aayog, Govt. of India. Dr. Salwan has been founder member of the Integrate Guided Missiles Program of Defence Research under the leadership of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. Dr. Salwan is recipient of many national and international awards including the Life Time Achievement Award by the Prime Minister of India for Invaluable Contribution in Defence Technologies and Strategic Defence-2009.
Ques 1: Kindly tell us about your experience in the education industry and what makes it the best industry to work in?
Ans. Experience in working with education industry is like building a nation which is a privilege. The strength of the education sector is that it regularly receives fresh reservoir of talent each year and thus has great opportunities to nurture talent, create new knowledge and develop new technologies and services.
Ques 2: Any of the significant challenges you faced in ASU?
Ans. ASU being a Research and Innovation driven University and we have an integration of Liberal Arts approach to teaching-learning with an aim to promote skills and abilities to think and analyze critically we have the challenge of attracting the best of the talent both from the student community as well as the faculty and providing them the culture and eco-system for the research, innovation and entrepreneurship.
Ques 3: What goals do you have in your mind for ASU?
Ans. The Apeejay Stya University is founded on four main pillars:
- To take potential minds and propel them towards greatness
- To explore and expand the human knowledge base
- To deepen the understanding of the human condition, fostering universal values while being rooted in the Indian culture.
- To do public good, and benefit society and the country as a whole
At the Apeejay Stya University, we believe that the journey to discovering the answer to the question, “Who am I?” is a noble pursuit. We seek to be at the cutting-edge of all fields that we teach, and from there, push the boundaries forward.
As mentioned above the goals are clear nurturing young minds to explore themselves and work for the betterment of the society.
Ques 4: Any suggestions you would like to give to the current youth and the aspiring students?
Ans. ‘Love what you do or do what you love’, young minds can only succeed if they are passionate about it and exude excellence. “In today’s competitive environment it is very much required to have “positivity of mind and thoughts”. Youths should have good role models and mentors in their career. The youth will be empowered by latest technologies, new knowledge and ability to find answers to the questions around them.
Ques 5: How do you look at the growth of students through placement opportunities available at ASU? How do you wish to push the envelope further?
Ans. At ASU, Industry advisor/Mentor is engaged from the beginning of the curriculum development, in lieu of industry requirements in the current global scenario. This association further develops through organizing industry training, workshops, joint research, joint project assignments, guest lectures, internships and finally molding into final placements. The involvement with notable organizations like CII, FICCI, ASSOCHAM etc. encourages multiple associations with industries across the globe. We also nurture the concept of ‘entrepreneurship’ through our ‘E-Cell’ and is exploring the possibilities and looking forward to set up Incubation Centre’ with the support of leading industries from different verticals. Furthermore, the alumni from Apeejay institutions are placed in leading Indian business houses and MNCs at varied senior levels. The industry holds the intellectual wealth drawn from Apeejay institutions in high esteem which makes our students a preferred choice.
Ques 6: How do you tend to establish a relation with the students?
Ans. Relation with students can only be established by not only keeping the communication open and transparent but at the same time guiding them and hand holding when required. Regular meetings with students and taking feedback from our internal mechanism helps to maintain relation with students.
Ques 7: Tell us about your path towards attaining the positions of elite?
Ans. Honesty, self-assessment, publication of research work and academic excellence these are the milestones to reach my goal.
Ques 8: How do you build a positive school culture or climate?
Ans. A positive school climate is one where individuals feel valued, cared for and respected. Such an atmosphere contributes to effective teaching and learning and to genuine communication, both within and outside the school. On regular basis we organize Faculty Development programs on these areas, students are always encouraged to come up with their ideas through various clubs and associations, organizing discussions, seminars, lectures by expert and healthy academic and extra-curricular competitions.
Ques 9: What are your takes on education being digitalized?
Ans. Digital learning technologies can enable students to grasp concepts more quickly and fully, to connect theory and application more adeptly, and to engage in learning more readily, while also improving instructional techniques, leveraging instructor time, and facilitating the widespread sharing of knowledge. Digital technologies will enable this in new and better ways and create possibilities beyond the limits of our current imagination.
Ques 10: What would be your ideal school environment, and how would you encourage that kind of culture?
Ans. An ideal school environment embraces the idea that ALL students can learn it attracts teachers who are knowledgeable, care about student learning, and adapt their instruction to meet the needs of their learners. The school environment should work hard to make the curriculum relevant to the lives of students. Transparency and urge to learn should always be encouraged in the environment.
