Prof. Premendu P. Mathur, Ph.D. is the Vice-Chancellor, KIIT University, Bhubaneswar, India. He is a Fellow of National Academy of Medical Sciences (India) and General Secretary (Scientific Activities) of the Indian Science Congress Association, Kolkata. He is Vice-President, Asian Association of Andrology (China) and on the Membership Committee of the Society for the Study of Reproduction, U.S.A.
Previously he served as Dean, School of Life Sciences and Professor of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Head, Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics, Pondicherry University, Pondicherry. He received M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi.
Prof. Mathur has been Visiting Professor/ Scientist at The Population Council, Rockefeller University, New York, Cleveland Clinic, USA, Westfalische-Wilhelms Universitat, Muenster, Germany and Hamad Medical Centre, Qatar.
Ques 1: Kindly tell us about your experience in the education industry and what makes it the best industry to work in?
Ans. The education industry is one of the most dynamic industries at this time catering to the needs of the young people. I have always enjoyed working with young minds as the environment created by them is very challenging and academically stimulating.
Ques 2: What are significant challenges that you are facing in bringing out the real vision of the Organization?
Ans. Our University has the vision to develop itself as a world class education provider. In this process, we had to create huge and structural changes so that the vision of achieving excellence is realized. We have already been accredited by NAAC with ’A’ grade and NBA under Washington Accord.
Ques 3: Tell us about some of your experiences and how does your curriculum ensure the best practices of the industry?
Ans. KIIT University is unique as during the last four years we have revised our curriculum twice and have introduced several new teaching programs. Our University has updated the curriculum and has provided flexible options and credit based system of teaching. Thus, the students can learn several of the areas of their interest in addition to their core subject. The University has also brought in experienced persons from industries for designing curriculum. Many industry electives are also being offered by several industries in various branches of Technology.
Ques 4: What goals do you have in your mind for KIIT?
Ans. At KIIT University we believe that achieving excellence is a very systematic process and we want to make the University one of the best Universities in the country. We have adopted several best practices for the benefit of students and teaching-learning process.
Ques 5: There have been talks of KIIT University having very different plans for delivering educational expertise to every aspirant, kindly elaborate on it more?
Ans. The University delivers educational expertise through various methods. On line availability of resources to the students is a significant development. The tutor – mentor approach has yielded very good results and has helped the students in a very big way. Each student is under the watchful care of a faculty member.
Ques 6: How do you plan to build a positive school culture or climate in KIIT University?
Ans. The University has been seeking inputs from various stakeholders including the students and the University is very quick in introducing new programs. A large number of foreign students are on the campus. Thus, we wish to make our University an important destination for foreign students as well.
Ques 7: What is your philosophy of leadership? How would you describe your leadership?
Ans. I always believe in participatory leadership process wherein suggestions from various stakeholders are taken into account. However, I have tried to provide very firm academic leadership so that the culture of research along with teaching becomes very visible.
Ques 8: What would be your ideal school environment, and how would you encourage that kind of culture?
Ans. The ideal way of an environment is based on experiential learning and we are trying to strengthen our laboratories so that all the students can have hands-on learning and get an environment to innovate and become entrepreneurs themselves.
Ques 9: Any suggestions you would like to give to the current youth and the aspiring students?
Ans. I would urge to the students to look beyond the curricula and develop a habit of continuous learning which would help them in the long run. I would also like that the students should learn the value of time and try themselves to achieve their chosen goals.
