Mr. Onkar Bagaria is currently the CEO of Vivekananda Global University. He is pursuing his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Engineering Education Management from Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani. He has done MBA from Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani and did B.E. in electronics engineering from CMR Institute of Technology. He is the CEO of VGU since 2012. He has worked as an innovation manager at Vivekanand Incubation Center and as an Assistant Manager in IDBI Bank. He has also worked as a Manager in CSR Partnership at Vivekanand Institute of Technology, Jaipur.
Ques 1: Kindly tell us about your experience in the education industry and what makes it the best industry to work in?
Ans. Education means empowering knowledge, continuous learning, experimenting and experiencing. The industry which is ever inspiring and believes in continuous learning is no doubt the best industry to work for. The best part about education industry is that it doesn’t have any restriction to empowerment but it compasses each and every individual who is ready to learn. It also doesn’t restrict to just one-way communication (i.e. teacher to student). It is a two-way communication by various means such as discussion, seminars, presentations, projects and practical’s. My experience in the education industry is so far educative, learning filled and practical driven.
Ques 2: Any significant challenge that you faced as the CEO of Vivekananda Global University?
Ans. There are many challenges especially in introducing any new concept to match the real-time challenges. The parents and students still believe in the classical approach of teaching i.e. the teacher must teach the students such that he/she just completed his/her course and got a job. But the modern approach says you have to be a continuous learner to stay updated with the ever-changing industry. The introduction of Entrepreneurship courses and mentoring is one such example of many challenges faced by me. But gradually, students and parents have started understanding the concept and importance of the same.
Ques 3: How does your curriculum ensure best practices of the industry?
Ans. Our curriculum is designed by a group of experts who have a vast and diversified experience in an industry. Moreover, being a university, empower us to introduce and implement new industry oriented courses and change them from time to time as and whatever the industry demand. Our curriculum is designed a mixture of the basic concepts techniques empowered with modern technologies and concepts. Our evaluations scheme ensures continued monitoring and progress of a student. We, at Vivekananda Global University, believe in nurturing the strength of the students and help them overcome their weaknesses and make them ready to face real time industry challenges.
Ques 4: What goals do you have in your mind for Vivekananda Global University?
Ans. Our main goal is to develop the physical, mental, emotional, secular and spiritual sphere of our students with a view to make them creative professionals of global standard and responsible citizens of the global world. We believe in making them job creators rather being a job seeker. Our curriculum, courses, and methodology along with the dedication of our faculty members and staff help us achieve the same.
Ques 5: You pride yourself on the level of education and responsibility you teach here to students. How to ensure the quality of education in your institution?
Ans. My staff is as enthusiastic as I am and we collectively believe in the concept of continued learning. My faculties are involved in research, learning and continue updating knowledge in order to provide the best to the students. The quality gets compromised when the class rooms restrict to the theory. But my faculty is in the line of the vision and mission of the institute and there is no compromise to the level of education imparted by our university.
Ques 6: How do you build a positive school culture or climate?
Ans. Each and every individual is different from other. It's about understanding students and taking them together in all the spheres whether its classroom, playroom, practical lab or any other field. Our focus is also on improving the social-emotional learning along with the academic achievements. We have set up mentoring and monitoring cell which help students by continuous mentoring and to look after their performance on regular basis. The university also has 19+ student driven clubs that make student social, confident as per the market needs. For female students and staff, we have women cell that looks after their security and safety.
Ques 7: What is the philosophy of leadership? How would you describe your leadership style?
Ans. Leadership, in my opinion, is being able to create and maintain a culture wherein people around you are self-motivated and full of positive spirit and enthusiasm. Each and every member has a strong sense of belongingness and is deliberately prepared to put his/her heart and soul in achieving their organizational goal, which in our case is, to provide quality education to all our students. A leader is truly effective if he is able to connect with people both socially and emotionally. Here, at Vivekananda Global University, we try to inculcate in our staff and students, a positive attitude towards life so that they are able to give their 100% in all their endeavours. I believe that an educated society like ours cannot flourish without the fruitful contribution of its members, i.e. both staff and students.
Ques 8: Being a professor yourself and to be involved in the deep decision makings of the Institute how important do you feel the need of the top management of various institutes to the involved in daily decision makings?
Ans. Educational institutions are the foundation stones on which the future of the students depends. Being a professor, what I feel is that top management should be involved in daily decision making. It's not a business but a serious job where it's not only about imparting education to the students, but also about the faith of the parents which they have shown us and most importantly the career of the students. Top management being involved in daily decision making can help to accelerate the various administrative related decisions as well as they can contribute directly to the development of institution by effective and judicious decision making.
Ques 9: What would be your ideal school environment and how would you encourage that kind of culture?
Ans. The ideal school environment is where a student has nurtured in a manner so that their overall development of the student. A school is a place where you not only learn but explore, an experiment in a secure environment, experience, and the gain knowledge. This kind of environment can only be created with the right kind of leadership which not only encourages a child to focus on self-development but also to be self-disciplined. We are living in the era of high technology, where the child has immense potential to do miracles which are possible only if her/his talent is being recognized at the earliest and he/she gets the impetus to achieve excellence in his/her respective area of interest.
Ques 10: Any suggestions you would like to give to the current youth and aspiring students?
Ans. Current youth and aspiring students have the required zeal and enthusiasm to do something big in their life. The only thing required is right guidance and correct utilization of their energy. If their energy is in a positive direction, then the results will be constructive. They must be aware of what they want to achieve in their life and we are here to guide them so that they are successful in all their endeavours. The industrial demand and the student's output should be in line so that the requirements of both fits in which lead us to build a strong and vibrant nation.Last Updated - 23 Aug 2017
