Prof Y. K Vijay is currently working as the President of Vivekananda Global University, Jaipur. He received his M.Sc. degree in Physics and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Rajasthan, Jaipur (India) in 1975 and 1980 respectively. He was awarded Commonwealth and ICTP fellowships and spent one year in Uppsala University Sweden. He served as a Professor, Department of Physics, Director, Centre for Development of Physics Education and Centre for Non-Conventional Energy Resources at the University of Rajasthan, Jaipur, India. Prof. Vijay has co-authored over 200 research articles in refereed journals (Citation over 2500, “h” index 23) and over 150 research papers in conference proceedings. He has delivered over 100 invited talks and has co-authored two books on Basic and Semiconductor Physics.
He has advised numerous Masters and Undergraduate research projects to-date. His professional awards include IUMRS Young Research, R K Ramanath, IAPT Teaching Aids Award. He has also developed Electron Positron Accelerator, XRF CVD and Positron Lifetime Spectrometer. He has spent 33 years in teaching and research field of semiconductor thin films and nano porous polymeric filters. His current research interests are polymer blends for organic photovoltaic cells, design and development of CNT/Polymer composite based gas sensors and gas separation filters. He is also studying photo luminescence and nonlinear optical properties of nano particles doped polymeric composites. He is a life member of IAPT, APS NSI, IPA, RAPT, MRSI and President of IAPT-RC6 as well as Rajasthan Chapter of MRSI.
Q 1. Kindly tell us about your experience in the education industry and what makes it the best industry to work in?
Ans. In a social system, the Knowledge and its proper utilization are regarded as best practice and commodity. We at VGU produce such products, therefore it feels as best industry to work in.
Q 2. What is your philosophy of leadership?
Ans. In leadership, you need to realize your own strength, show it and maintain it. People will then like and follow you, that’s how I feel.
Q 3. Any of the significant challenges you faced as the president of Vivekananda Global University?
Ans. The biggest challenge that you face is the retention of good faculty in your team.
Q 4. How do you look at the growth of students through placement opportunities available at Vivekananda Global University?
Ans. At VGU, we encourage project-based learning and put more emphasis on practical work and training. It helps in getting placement, with good communication skill gives a boost in employability.
Q 5. Do you agree that the other universities across the country are coming at the level of IITs or will there always remain a difference in terms of quality education?
Ans. Yes, I agree on present trend, however, I hope new institutions are coming up in the specialized area in the near future.
Q 6. How do you build a positive culture or climate among the students?
Ans. We have students from 20 different states, they all participate in different clubs and functions. They get to share the food, music, dance and festivals with different colors. Thus, a positive culture is built.
Q 7. How does your university curriculum ensure best practices of the industry?
Ans. We have industry’s representative on our boards of studies. Also, all students go for industry visit and training for a semester to get maximum exposure.
Q 8. How do you make yourself available to the students?
Ans. I am always available to the students in the campus itself. I also take special lectures in different groups, every month.
Q 9. What goals do you have in your mind for your university for the next few years?
Ans. Our goal is to produce students to be 100% employable and communicable, entrepreneurs or creative researchers.
Q 10. Any suggestions you would like to give to the current youth and the aspiring students?
