MATS Institute of Management & Entrepreneurship - [MIME], Bangalore

Bangalore, Karnataka AICTE Estd 2001 Private

Interview: Dr. Jitendra Kumar Mishra, Director, MATS Institute of Management and Entrepreneurship, Bangalore

Ques. Tell us something about your experience in entrepreneurship education, research & institution building?

Ans. During last decade, the Entrepreneurship Education has gained much attention. The increasing support from Institutions, financing agencies and Government has further added to the interest of youth in the field of Entrepreneurship. The enthusiasm, creativity and participation of students in the courses/programmes on Entrepreneurship has been very much fulfilling and being faculty you also learn a lot in the process.

Ques. What’s your take on building entrepreneurship in India as lots of start ups are coming into existence?

Ans. For a country like India where population is huge and difference across the population is big in terms of income, education, and infrastructure, it is not possible to ensure employment for all. As a matter of fact there is a huge gap between the skills required by industry and the skills possessed by the candidates looking for the respective jobs. In such a situation entrepreneurship is the alternative wherein the people with business ideas and high entrepreneurial quotient be encouraged to start their own enterprises and create employment opportunities for others.

In India it is perhaps the best ever time for pursuing entrepreneurship, when we have enough success stories to motivate the new entrants, lot of support from financing agencies and government. In the union budget 2016-17 also many provisions have been made to encourage the startups.

Having said that we need to create an ecosystem and efficient governance to help the new entrepreneurs to sustain and grow.

Ques. What you think is required to be a successful entrepreneur?

Ans. To my mind the one basic thing that an entrepreneur needs to have to be successful is the understanding of value proposition for the business they are engaged in and passion for their work. He needs to have clarity about what value for customer is he creating out of his business. If the business offers adequate value to the customer it will succeed. Additionally, as the entrepreneur has to deal with the various adversities for which he needs to have right attitude and aptitude.

Ques. How challenging it is to promote entrepreneurship at national & international levels?

Ans. It is challenging because we live in an interdependent world where everything is competing for time, money, convenience, success. We all think in terms of available alternatives and optimize the outcome with respect to the risk involved. Everybody does not want to venture into risk despite having competence or creativity. There needs to be a cushion to make people believe even if their business idea fail they will be able to do well in life. For example, many premier institutions encourage students to optional for Entrepreneurship and allow them for campus placement up to three years if they could not succeed in business. It is challenging because there is a deep conditioning of mind for cozy and glamorous job. Very few dare to choose to go beyond their comfort zone.

Ques. Can you enlighten us with the mode of admission in this institute and what are the different courses which are being offered?

Ans. MIME Bangalore courses offers two years full time PGDM approved by AICTE, New Delhi. Entrepreneurship, leadership and consultancy constitute the central pillars of programme. Admission is done on the basis of the combined scores of the entrance test (CAT/MAT/XAT/ATMA/MAT) and GD/PI.
