“Diabetes is one of the largest global health emergencies of the 21st Century. Each year more and more people live with this condition, which can result in life-changing complications. In addition to the 415 million adults who are estimated to currently have diabetes, there are 318 million adults with impaired glucose tolerance, which puts them at high risk of developing the disease in the future. Diabetes affected people may increase about 642 million by 2040” Prof. Rakesh Kumar Sahay, HoD, Department of Endocrinology, Osmania Medical College said.
Department of Chemistry & IT GITAM University, Hyderabad and Centre for Molecular Modeling - IICT have jointly organized one-day National Workshop on 'Big Data Applications in Drug Repurposing' at its campus on 23rd October 2017. Eminent Professors, Doctors and Scientists from Academia and Research come together for new drugs discovery and repurposing.
In his keynote address, Dr. Rakesh told that High blood pressure, smoking, Sedentary lifestyle, Overweight, High fat & cholesterol levels and family history of diabetes are the risk factors for diabetes. Balance diet, regular physical exercise and change in the lifestyle can reduce the diabetes disease, he opined. Collaborative research in Biomedical Sciences can achieve much more, Prof. Manisha Sahay of Osmania Medical College, Hyderabad said. She expressed unhappy rather treating the kidney failure patients without finding the actual cause.
Prof. Vlodimir Poroikov and Dr. Druzhilovskiy Dimitry of Institute of Biomedical Chemistry, Moscow, Russia; Dr. G. Narahari Sastry and Dr. Radhakrishna of IICT, Hyderabad and Prof. Rajesh Kumar Goel of Punjab University, Patiala were the guests of honour on this occasion.
GITAM Hyderabad Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. N. Siva Prasada chaired the inaugural session. School of Technology Principal Prof. Ch. Sanjay, Department of IT HoD Prof. M. Akkalakshmi, Department of Chemistry HoD Dr. G. Rambabu also took part in the workshop. About 100 students across the country participated and get exposed using the big data in the discovery of new drugs and repurposing.
The next upcoming event in GITAM University is the Eight Convocation for candidates who have studied at Hyderabad campus of GITAM University. It will be held on Saturday, the 18th November 2017 at Hyderabad Campus. Prof. N. Siva Prasad, Pro Vice-Chancellor, GU-Hyderabad has informed in a press release on Friday. Candidates from Hyderabad campus qualified for the award of Degrees/ Diplomas during 2016-17 are eligible to apply.
