Dr. T.N. Nagabhushan is the Principal of SJCE, JSS STU, Mysore; Karnataka. Having worked in the educational field, he describes why it is the best domain to work in. Also, how the education field provides ample opportunities to grow professionally which develops leadership skills in an individual. On the same line, he describes the essential qualities of a leader, and how he, as a leader, caters to the needs of the organization. Moving forward he differentiates between the education system in Indian and abroad and highlights the major advancements that the institute is aiming to bring. These can only be achieved by support of industry and experts. Therefore, a blend of industry and academia knowledge requirement results impartation of quality education. To help students grow in all verticals, it is imperative to provide a congenial learning atmosphere, which he considers to be one of his core responsibilities. Additionally, he focuses on the faculty development and encourages them to to acquire certifications to acquire competency in their areas. Coming to the conclusion of the interview, he advises students to build a mathematical aptitude which gives a different angle to solve a problem 


My Passion and determination to work and evolve as a better person kept me connected to the education domain

I had opportunities to hold various positions in the academic systems during my four decades of journey. The key factors that made me connected to the education systems include but not limited to Passion for Research, The joy of sharing knowledge with students and the quest to do something useful to solve societal problems. These factors helped me enjoy my academic life all through.


A pivotal aspect of becoming a successful leader is to be a good listener first 

I would see leadership as a power to accomplish higher objectives by following a theme “if you want to be a good leader you should be a good listener”. Taking everyone into confidence and involving them in collective wisdom always improves leadership ability as an individual. 


The legacy of our great alumni has contributed to the creation of excellent institution status around the world

Our institution is in existence since 1963 and has seen the epitome of success during its journey over 5 decades. Key programmes in engineering have been added based on societal needs. The legacy of our great alumni has contributed to the creation of excellent institution status around the world. Our alumni are the best ambassadors. The future education system is to be evolved taking into cognizant the industrial requirement and also societal needs. The institution has a legacy of creating such programmes in the past and has the capacity to switch over to the creation of new programmes based on the dynamics of the society.

The recent changes introduced includes understanding our environment, getting connected with everything around us

I have taught the graduate students at Korea University and Hannan University, Japan. I have participated in symposiums, conferences in different countries in the world. The education system there is different compared to ours. The recent changes introduced by AICTE in the technical education system include understanding our environment, getting connected with everything around us and understanding the problems of the society. These are bought out in the form of an Induction Programme by AICTE which is a good move. Some of the recent changes in the education system include student centric teaching that directly aims in improving cognitive levels of students. Our University is implementing such a kind of learning environment and the student’s groups gain different levels of Bloom's taxonomy and make use of all evolving opportunities in the campus.


The blend of industry and academia knowledge requirement results impartation of quality education 

Our institution has the autonomy to change the curriculum. The Board of Studies comprises of experts from the industry and well known institutions and research centres. The blend of industry and academia knowledge requirement ultimately results in the creation of courses which could become hard core. Provisions are available to change the curriculum. This provides an opportunity for the students to acquire knowledge on cutting edge technologies. 


Providing a congenial learning atmosphere is one of the core responsibilities of the principal

As a principal I am responsible for implementing the policies of the university. The university encourages student’s centric system. Faculties have the freedom to engage the students in wide varieties of ways to impart knowledge. Providing a congenial learning atmosphere is one of the main responsibilities of the principal. Appreciating the best talent among the faculty and students has to be one of the traits of a great principal. This is being practiced in our institution. The students have been given full freedom to enjoy learning in the campus and also are allowed to innovate and create impactful projects. 


Future problems will revolve around creative thinking and would require higher cognitive skills

I personally believe that the kind of job market at the end of next 10 years is not known. But I believe that the opportunities over the next ten years would be revolving around creative thinking and the problems the industry would offer to the young graduates would require higher cognitive abilities. In this context, we need to prepare the students through the University dynamic curriculum to prepare them as future ready engineers. Universities must involve in training the students to acquire a higher cognitive level, that leads to creative thinking. 


We make sure to provide an ambient atmosphere for the students to develop and grow

Our university is known for an excellent teaching and industry driven system. Lot of emphasis has been laid on societal needs. Campus placement with over 130 industries is the centre of attraction. Freedom to excel in any specific area of focus is a key parameter for the university system. Innovations galore through Hackathons and Ideathons. Incubation cells are available for experimenting ideas. Truly one would enjoy being a student of our education system.


The backbone and masterminds are faculty, facilities and unbounded support from the management 

The greatest strength of our university is dedicated faculty, facilities and unbounded support from the management. There is a complete freedom for every faculty to evolve and work in a cooperative and collaborative environment. The student groups are simply brilliant. They are the driving force of university.


Faculty must be encouraged to acquire certifications to acquire competency in their areas

The biggest challenge in the country in higher education is shortage of knowledgeable faculty. Inbreeding does not really help much. The faculty needs to get expertise by studying in premier institutions within or outside the country to acquire adequate knowledge. I personally feel that the country does not have knowledge rich manpower across all 3000 & odd educational institutions. The teaching can also be addressed through various technologies, video enabled teaching, blended teaching etc., and our education system should open up to the use of modern tools.

Students are required to build a mathematical aptitude which gives a different angle to solve a problem 

The next generation students must have mathematical aptitude in engineering. I believe personally that every problem when looked through mathematical frameworks lead to newer ideas and newer solutions. This is needed in all branches of engineering in the 21st century. Because the challenges in the 21st century are highly complex. I suggest students see physics in mathematics.
