CAT 2018 NEWS
NATIONAL LEVEL ONLINE TEST
The Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta is known to be the first national institute for post-grad studies and research in management. It was established in 1961. Over the years,it has gained a global reputation of being one of the pioneering institutes in India,that imparts high quality management education. Today,the institute serves as an autonomous body,continually evolving to meet its goals in an ever-changing business environment.
For all those planning to give the exam, the CAT 2018 Registration will begin from first week of August, 2018 to September, 2018 tentatively.Candidates can download their CAT 2018 Admit Card from October, 2018 onwards.The exam will be conducted in November, 2018.
To be able to appear for the CAT 2018 exam, candidates from the general category must secure at least 50% in graduation.
After a lot of discussion and debate,the Indian Institute of Management,Calcutta, is now amending its admission system.This step was probed by the recruiters and management experts, to rework on the institute’s image as an ‘engineer-only’ B-school.
The Common Admission Test (CAT) has always been the ultimate deciding factor for admission into the various management schools.They definitely give bonus points to the engineers applying for different courses. But the new change says,that a candidate’s CAT Score will not be the single determining factor for admissions.This change will be seen from the academic session 2017-2019.
The admission committee will be giving less weightage to the CAT score and put greater emphasis on class X and class XII results.This step will ensure “all eligible and competent graduates” a level playing field. Candidates may please note that the total score for shortlisting interviewees before the preparation of the final merit list, has been halved from 100 marks to 50 marks.The final merit list will also be on 50 points.
Although a change in its admission criteria, the cut-offs haven’t been affected.They have remained similar to the ones that we last year.The CAT cutoff required students of general category to score at least 90 percentile.However,the CAT cutoff for Scheduled Caste (70),Scheduled Tribe(70),Non-Creamy Other Backward Class (85) and Persons with Disability (70),have remained the same.
Once a candidate clears the CAT exam,he gets selected for the interview and written test.IIM-C has been one of the toughest colleges to enter.It’s MBA in finance and other consulting courses have been a dream for many different candidates. In the final phase of the admission process, candidates are selected through their CAT scores and class X and class XII results.There have been special privileges for women too where they are awarded additional marks.Till 2016, the candidates for written test and interview were selected through the below criteria:

According to the changes from the academic year 2017-2019, the below criteria will be followed:
|Women/ Gender Diversity||4|
The admissions chairperson,Mr. Pritam Basu, explains how IIM-C was becoming an increasingly “engineer-only” institute.The institute ended up taking in engineers of a particular background,when theCAT score was the prime factor for admission.It only used to award additional weightage to the non-engineering graduates in the final selection stage.
With the amendments in the selection procedure,the institute tries to encourage people of the non-engineering background.This will enhance the pool of graduates from other streams.It will further lead to pouring in of different inputs and perspectives of these students.The classroom discussions with these students add value to knowledge.Moreover,a consistent good performer with good academic background should not be penalized for scoring less in just one entrance test.And hence, the change in admission system.
According to a survey in 2014, the diversity of students in the PGDM batch of 2012-2014 has been described below:
This data clearly explains how the PGDM batch of 2012-2014 was majorly engineering dominated.A heavy 95% of the total students in class, belonged to the engineering stream.Students from Science accounted for 2%And students from Arts,Commerce and other fields accounted to 1% each.
To decrease this disparity between students from engineering and non-engineering background,the IIM-C has taken this step.The institute intends to encourage students from all steams, says the chairman.This will encourage healthy dialogues and perspectives coming from students of different backgrounds
